- makezine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1we're looking in to other IM networks, but for now we're just AIM.
- GnatMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just got pinged with this story. I love this feature in the MAKEbot because I like digg, but it's such a time drain to check every new story that hits the top lists. So now they just pop up in iChat, and if I'm busy I can close the window, or if I'm just screwing around, I can actually read the story.
- makezine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no quotes on all these...type "ping bb start" for boingboing posts as they happen...type "ping latest start" for make magazine posts as they happen.
type sample for some free make pdfs.
you can also type help for all the commands. - makezine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mojave- no prob, it's all cool. i'm not sure why it says that for service, maybe that's how all bots are listed. we worked with aol to get the rate limit removed, they've been really helpful. the makebot is an experiment and they were willing to try us out.
as far as bot making - yup, it's easy, lots of information out there, just like making web pages and blogs, it's what you do, how you do it and how you build a community. - Mojave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems like the jury is out on this one... do people really want a bot IMing them with the latest Digg stories?
If so, I could easily make an MSN bot to do the same or a Jabber bot, if anyone here uses that. I've been writing AIM/MSN/Jabber bots for a few years now. - PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is there a fark ping? That would be t3h sw33t5. not fark tech though... that's a digg mirror.
- TheWino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice!
- tysonhy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's Cool!
- elrawtic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a even a Chuck Norris bot could not handle the amount of requests that is about to go down.
- OneZeroZeroOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Useful...but...why would you essentially give away your screen name to the faceless conglomerate running that bot?
Enjoy the spam you'll be getting =) - jeff1943, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The idea is cool. Now, MSN version pl0x? AIM sucks.
- HiddenS3crets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very cool
- makezine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we're testing out the pings, so please everyone feel free to use it - we don't think it will go down. the makebot is strong, like bull.
there isn't a farkbot / ping yet, but it's possible (and we hope to work with them soon on that).
GnatMan- that's exactly why we made it! thanks! - BigG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if only I used AIM.
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, as if people aren't addicted to digg already ;)
- dsandler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've always liked the MAKEbot, and hooking this new ping feature up to other feeds would be cool, but I'd be afraid of IM-bubble overload with more than one or two high-volume feeds. I mean, that's what feed readers are for, right? They organize lots of feeds in a way you can reasonably digest. The bummer is that they're not immediate like the MAKEbot---there's a polling delay you're supposed to observe.
[Warning, self-link follows.] If you use a desktop feed reader, you can get the same kind of "push" (rapid updates, not once-an-hour) with FeedTree, and it works for any feed---not just Digg. (Just to give you an idea, there are enough Digg subscribers that we get new dugg links pretty rapidly---a new burst every 10 minutes or so, without hammering digg.com's servers.)

I actually just wrote about Digg on FeedTree a couple of days ago:
http://feedtree.net/blog/2006/02/21/digg-scribe-tree/
So, it's an alternative way to get your Digg fix. Let me know what you think. - makezine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PlancksCnst - type "ping podcast start" for now that's only the MAKE podasts, but over time, we hope to add more with other bots too. you can also type "podcast" to see our last 5.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And why can't we just use RSS feeds?
- PlancksCnst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's awesome. Push technology is great! Now if we could get this type of thing with podcasts...
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll have to try it with my cell phone. It would be cool to have digg stories sent to your phone as a text as they hit the front page!
- rafal_m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ichat is working too
- seasunsurf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's always nice to see people doing something new and giving it away for free. Do we really need whining from the AIM haters? No, we don't.
- Glich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0crashes my corprate IM. (its AOL compatable)
- Mongoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I won't use it, but cool idea nonetheless.
- theartofennui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lots of other neat features too... :)
- makezine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0theschles - just type digg to get a response right away. sometimes the feeds aren't updated. also make sure you typed the following
ping digg start - onestep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think I'll hold off on this one.. I have a life and don't live/die by whether or not I get my digg stories. I'll stick for RSS for now, and access it on my time.
- a1programmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@theartofennui
Gotcha. I've never actually looked at the RSS feed. Thanks for the info. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been doing this for weeks now, but with a transport plugin I made for my jabber server.
*shrug* - makezine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dsandler - yah, i think there are -many- ways people can use rss, i tend to like digg alerts, like on the makebot AND i use a rss reader and read about 200 feeds. more options=better. also for phones, IM is super easy and it's built in for the most part.
onezerozeroone - it's not a faceless conglomerate, it's make magazine (sergio and i work on the makebot) you have to add the bot, you have to type specically what you want, and at any time you can type, stop, cancel, or removall and the makebot is dead to you. - a1programmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's skipping posts, no digg...
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I imagine this would get terribly annoying after a while. Neat, but I'll stick with RSS.
- theartofennui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a1programmer, the reason it might skip feeds sometimes is because digg doesn't update their RSS feeds on every posts, it does it based on time and if there have been several front page stories MAKEbot will update you with the latest one on that feed. But overtime it might be able to check several items in the feed and give you updates on all of them.
- dink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How much does it cost to run your own ping Bot with aim. What are the licensing terms. Where could I find this information?
- montek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh joy, more freaking IMs blinking in my task bar. No, thanks. (But I appreciate the idea.)
- makezine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mojave- the makebot is not activebuddy (but activebuddy is a *great* platform) - ours is perl and we worked with aol to get it going. you're right, making bots is easy, we hope more people will make bots and have all sorts of wonderful ways to get information in one of the best ways (my opinion) - instant message.
- Mojave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The bot appears to be an ActiveBuddy bot. ActiveBuddy claims to have a patent on using bots on IM. Another failure of the patent system, since there was tons of prior art before they "invented" IM bots.
Anyhow, as I remember it, ActiveBuddy pays AOL $100,000 per bot screenname for that bot to have none of the normal AIM user limitations - primarily message rate. Creating your own AIM bots is pretty trivial and free, in Perl and other languages, but you have the limits of message rate. Basically, an AIM bot can only send a message every 3 seconds and that is for ALL users combined. SO if your bot has 100 simultaneous users, each user can expect a 5 minute delay in getting a response from the bot.
MSN and Jabber have no such limits. Most good bots therefore use those services. - theschles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DIdn't see anything over a 5 minute period, even over the latest feed. The MakeAdmin said to be patient...
- lilricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Remember, if you dont use or want to use AIM, you can use ICQ instead. Just follow the same instructions as above except using ICQ.
- Mojave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0makezine, the reason I said it was ActiveBuddy is because that's what it says for "service" in Trillian. Sorry if I got that wrong, but then why does it say ActiveBuddy? How do you get around the message rate limit, if you don't mind me asking? Is that because of your relationship with AOL?
Also, when I said making bot is easy, I meant if you're a programmer and have the right tools. I don't want to slight MakeBot. I've been programming IM bots for a few years and so I guess it just seems easy now and I agree that IM is a great way to disseminate certain kinds of information. - eliteeggnog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's why they invented Digg Spy.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Makebot is so annoying. Plus it's always late.
- DiggBotMSN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MSN Version: http://digg.com/software/DiggBot
- sondosia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa, awesome.
- PlancksCnst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0glich,
If that's Lotus Sametime you're talking about, you should try the latest Gaim. There is a plugin for Sametime. I tried it out in my office and it's awesome. I love it.
montek,
It's not just about IM. It's about push content. With push, the server won't have so many thousands of requests every second from users checking to see if there is new content. Instead, the server knows when there is new content and pushes it right to the users. Also, with push, it becomes easy to select if you want to send out content to a specific group of people (testers or paying subscribers, etc.) before sending it to the rest of the people. Also, as a user, you will know immediately when new content is available - you don't wait for a poll every say, hour or day or whatever the feedreader decides. It comes in right away. If you don't want to be bothered, just let it collect the messages and come back to read them later. - brejc8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or the universal version: AIM, ICQ, MSN, Google Talk
http://brej.org/imbbs/ - eNthem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0TO: lane.montgomery
I thought about that too, but after a little while, it will become very annoying! BEleive me!

"If you think you know everything, you should know about http://www.enthem.com by now" - eNthem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's a useful feature, but I hope to see more of that in the future...

"If you think you know everything, you should know about http://www.enthem.com by now" - hausome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I agree that AIM sucks but everyone I know uses it. So good for me!
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0who uses aim?
