Tech notebook: Craig of craigslist sets record straight

It's the type of scoop that has come to characterize Valleywag: Craig Newmark, founder of the eponymous craigslist classified site, had left his creation behind, the Silicon Valley gossip blog reported Thursday.
The reporter cited a story in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution that criticized craigslist for promoting child prostitution - but failed to check with the super-accessible Newmark.
We did. Not true, says Newmark, who answered his cell phone while commuting on Muni midday. Newmark, who is part of a team of customer service reps, said his responsibilities haven't changed - in a long time.
"I need a break," he chuckled. "I haven't had a vacation in 12 years."
Newmark said a "generous" explanation is that a company spokeswoman may have been misquoted. Coincidentally, Newmark recently joined the advisory board of FactCheckED.org.
A project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, the nonprofit is an educational resource that's designed to help high school teachers and students "cut through the fog of misinformation and deception" that you can find on the Internet.
Valleywag later updated its item to reflect Newmark's unchanged status, coincidentally after our call to Newmark.
He is NOT leaving... - suxmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33That's really too bad ... I hope that he still keeps Craigslist largely free as it has been. Bye Craig :(
- h4mx0r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28It would just be... list!
- tuxidomasx, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27it'd just be "slist" wouldnt it?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21He is still apart of Craigslist. He is not as much involved as he was previously.
- michaelnew20, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25That is crazy! I can't imagine Craigslist without Craig...can you?
- ButtonMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20We were at the corner of Main and 63rd. I was in a rusty brown 1974 Toyota Corolla and you were in the Lexus. Hit me up if you read this.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I think you meant this:
I have a pool table for sale. No Legs, No felt, 3 pockets missing, but other than that it's in GREAT SHAPE!!!! WOW!!!!
Make Me An Offer!!!!!!!!!!!
Will Trade for Jet Ski or 80's model Chevy Truck.
You pick up. - bigdoof, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Funny how one space can make all the difference.
- Leomarth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Free: One Craig Newmark, used. Also, a pile of junk. MUST TAKE ALL!
- Sarki, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Update: We heard from Newmark. His comments, after the jump.
In a couple of conversations on phone and Facebook, Newmark said he was still working at the company as a "customer service representative." - futureteg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7they already charge for posting ads in certain markets...you really didn't expect them to give away the thing for free?
- btgoss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Could they hire the right people to make it uglier? Do those people exist outside of sanatoriums and government secretarial positions?
- DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4As long as they don't try to make the site any uglier things should be just fine.
- iandouglas736, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Exactly, according to the article, he's been saying for years that he didn't want to be recognized as management, so they finally gave in and took him off the management bio page. But he's still there at the company.
Geez, read the whole article before posting a title/description that is inaccurate. - szembek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3After reading your summary, it seems the answer is no.
"is no longer is involved in the company's daily affairs"
This does not mean that is not involved with the company still. - dgp1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Seriously, Craig's blog confirms it, this title/description is inaccurate!
http://www.cnewmark.com/2007/08/im-not-going-an.html - LowRentDiggs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Charging for ads will be mostly a good thing I think. I have been on so many "interviews" at "companies" who posted on Craigslist trying to find people to exploit. They obviously get turned a lot because I see their same bait-and-switch ads every day. If its' $25 per day they won't keep doing it.
I almost think companies should have to post their names on there also. If you aren't proud enough in your company to post your name why would anyone want to work there? There are some situations where you wouldn't want your name on there probably but that's where you should be using a recruiter anyway. - warpdesign, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I don't know if he's still a part of it or not, but things over there do seem to be changing for the worse. Now they're proposing charging for job posting ads! http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/wri/ Totally seems contrary to the spirit of craigslist...
- rcran, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I saw one on there the other day. This kid wanted an iPod for less than $13, and it had to be delivered. Can you imagine?
- groupofone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As if the Urinal Constipation ever reported anything factual or even checked the veracity of its own statements.
- Murphy71984, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Comment of the Day :)
- Coestar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why not ask Craig himself? His blog debunks this rumor: http://www.cnewmark.com/ - Marked as inaccurate.
- xpankrat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1August 23, I'm not going anywhere...
I keep saying this repeatedly, not sure how the rumor started otherwise.
That's from http://cnewmark.com - Craig's blog. - thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I'm down for some schlitz .... oh, thats not what you meant?
- phaed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm sure Craig took the 's' with him
- joltjake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't you? The guy is rich as all of the Kutztown princes combined!
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Buried as inaccurate, Craig is still at Craigslist, he just doesn't run the place.
- recoletta01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Craig Newmark has *not* left Craiglist. According to this article in the San Jose Mercury News which spoke to Newmark himself yesterday, the spokeswoman in the earlier article was misquoted.
See the article for more details - http://www.mercurynews.com/search/ci_6706382?IADID=Search-www.mercurynews.com-www.mercurynews.com&nclick_check=1 - singebkdrft, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're thinking 4chan.
- funkytaco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Too bad http://list.org/ is taken by GNU Mailing list manager.
- eean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I remember when he was on the Daily Show, he made it sound like that was his job already.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1is is no longer is understanding
- jj9000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Good heavens!
- nortcele, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Now maybe animals can be sold under "Farm & Ranch" rather than the "For Sex" section.
- webRat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0They're rebranding to "Craigless" now.
- bigmacholmes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I guess it won't be craigs list anymore now would it?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0How does craigslist make money? They have to pay for their servers right?
- eburetto, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2are they changing the name to ******slist.com?
- wassim2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Good riddance. Maybe now it will have a decent interface and better search features.
- skeeterbug84, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Some of the ads cost money( real estate, and jobs I do believe).
- dealsdealer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3 did he find a life ??
- junesix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2So this is a non-story because he is still involved with the company, just not its management. I wouldn't be surprised if he plans on spending less and less time at Craigslist and more time at his non-profit Craigslist Foundation. The Foundation certainly put on a lot of Bay Area events in the last few months.
- WNW3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Buried as inaccurate, read the article before digging you rubes
- fintheman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Don't use it if you don't like it - I have always enjoyed the simple clean approach.
- bigfoot1977, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Craig went on vacation because Craig's Listless.
- holdencaulfield, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0maybe this will clear it up: http://www.cnewmark.com/2007/08/im-not-going-an.html
- kramo1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0O RLY?
- ericdano, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Craigslist is the cesspool of the net.
