- robbh66, on 02/19/2008, -26/+206Why anyone would ***** with Harvard is beyond me. The school really goes out of it's way to help the world and this is what they get for it.
- tonymotana, on 02/19/2008, -3/+153The sysadmin should be ashamed. It's Harvard not some around the corner website ...
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -1/+137This seems more like something that MIT and Caltech would do to each other as a prank.
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -11/+142"Harvard: pretending that we're smarter than you for decades."
Guess the truth's out. - Phocion55, on 02/19/2008, -13/+123Incredibly dick move having to inconvenience so many people just to make some lame point.

- jimmyhoffa2222, on 02/19/2008, -7/+55I support anyone saying "***** the RIAA" no matter how many times they say it.

- xsuite, on 02/19/2008, -3/+38Cant forget this one, too:
"Ivy League: perpetuating social divides and ensuring a distinct separation of the middle and upper classes for over 200 years!!!" - fredmv, on 02/19/2008, -1/+30See, this would *never* happen to MIT. They're on this ***** like a fly on *****.
- UnagiSan, on 02/19/2008, -2/+29Dugg for Harvard using a Joomla powered site.
- tomarocco, on 02/19/2008, -5/+32I'm all about owning an insecure server and putting up a page saying so...that would be a lesson, free security consulting, if you will....but, the bittorrent seed was definitely uncalled for. Really, really bad taste and bad karma. I consider that criminal.
- Jalh, on 02/19/2008, -0/+25http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4031271/harvard_s_hack
- MrWhite7, on 02/19/2008, -1/+25Coulda been worse... God help whoever hacks the law school.
- djdingo, on 02/19/2008, -1/+23Somebody just got fired.
- ipek, on 02/19/2008, -3/+24All that knowledge spread for free...
- Nougat, on 02/19/2008, -4/+24Yeah. me either, because I'm not an idiot. But lots of people are idiots, and when they hear people talking about bittorrent like it's a place where people do bad stuff, it makes those idiots want to block bittorrent transmissions.
- db113456, on 02/19/2008, -1/+21This looks to be more on the lines of a personal vengeance , than a server crack, and the backups may have been accidentally discarded , and found during a dumpster dive. If a real crack and sec. comp. was performed, there would be shadow files and other yummy stuff, and there are not, according to the article. Now i will not download the stuff, since i don't care that much about it, but if someone can confirm what i assumed, i would be glad.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 02/19/2008, -1/+20terrific analogy
- blazes816, on 02/19/2008, -0/+16There are shadow files.
- CTK14A, on 02/19/2008, -0/+16Not only am I confused now, I'm hungry too.
- pensivewombat, on 02/19/2008, -2/+18Harvard has made a point of making their tuition extremely affordable to those who are not wealthy.
- daliminator, on 02/19/2008, -0/+16Honestly Harvard's IT department keeps making itself look stupid. Harvard's internal websites look like crap, the internet connections are managed in most buildings by routers and switches that are too slow/outdated to manage loads effectively, and just a little while ago there was a fire that basically took down the entire system for a day.
While this is a terrible and stupid thing to do, I'm kind of glad that it'll get the people in charge to actually fix problems (hopefully) before they come up. - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -1/+16...Looks like the first to repliers missed the subtle sarcastic jab at the average digg user complaining about File-Sharing crackdowns...
- Nougat, on 02/19/2008, -13/+28You say that as though "bittorrent" is a secret place on the internet. This is why Comcast is ***** with torrent traffic.
It's not. It is a protocol for sharing all types of data files between clients in a distributed fashion.
The appropriate question would be "On which tracker?" - KennMac, on 02/19/2008, -7/+22I had no problem understanding what he meant.
- samard2002, on 02/19/2008, -9/+23It's just knowledge and information. It's not like if you take it from Harvard, they lose it -- that means it's not stealing. Besides, I wasn't going to attend Harvard anyway, so it's not like they are losing any money from me. Also, I like to try my education before I buy it. If I really like it, I always go to the school and pay full tuition later. And everyone knows that professors really make their money from doing speech tours anyway. The universities just RIP THEM OFF! ***** the NCAA!
- viewtiful4ever, on 02/19/2008, -2/+14lame
- FatLoser, on 02/19/2008, -1/+121) Do you know what a whistleblower is? I know the answer to that is "no" so I won't bother to enumerate the other important differences.
- dacheetah, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10It's probably gayer to "bury penis" if you are a dude...
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -12/+22Just got a rejection letter, didn't you?
Say what you want about standardized tests, but Harvard and other Top Universities are on average exceptionally brighter than those who went to say, community college. I'm not trying to sound elitist here, or that there aren't bright people at regular universities (because there are plenty throughout the country), but you're kidding yourself if you don't think that Harvard and the likes only accept based on money and standardized tests. These universities have funded countless amounts of research that has furthered humanity. - mentol, on 02/19/2008, -2/+12I think there's a link in the article if you follow it.
Not sure how good it would be to post it here :) - xenuxenuts, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11Money, diligence or brains: pick any 2.
- Gabberwok, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11Harvard has admitted once again that they suck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ99ScGdQv0
- daliminator, on 02/19/2008, -6/+15Yeah um way to make sweeping generalizations about institutions with which you're not personally familiar.
- prgmctan, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9it wasn't so subtle
- milliamp, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9The sad part is the tuition from one student alone is enough for massive upgrades to the network.
- Thugacation, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10I blame YALE!
- FatLoser, on 02/19/2008, -3/+12The '?' means you're testing the waters to see if that will still fly for a few diggs? Nope. You missed the bus by about a week.
- Lewie, on 02/19/2008, -4/+13Hey, they also lower admission standards for *lineage*. That's right, if your parents went there, chances are good that you'll get in. And along with the whole Affirmative Action thing, women (even white) benefit MOST from the program.
- TKardinal, on 02/19/2008, -2/+11Actually, if your family makes under $60k a year, and you get in...your tuition is free at Harvard.
Where else is that the case? - yeskia, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9Because open source matters!
- Tulle, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10I can't condemn him for leaking the content, because I have been in his position before... but this really is not worth showing off. Sure, its a big site and all.. but once you understand how this works, you will start to see how easy it is to hack a site considered to be "big".
The article won't load for me, but if the site was infact running Joomla (and that was where the exploit was) then this would be straight skiddie work I'm afriad. +1 for the cause, -1 for the lack of class and looking like an arrogant fool for showing it off.
Welcome back to the grey zone :P - Monk22, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8using Internet protocols that have not a damn thing to do with mac
