- joser916, on 06/24/2009, -0/+39i had a grandcentral.com account for a long wile now
(4 years) and it was free and it ask me to upgrade to Google voice last month for free and its the greatest thing the public has not tried yet so you guys are so in for a big surprise!! i love it! thanx Google!!!
Digg users love free stuff!!! - Choobie, on 06/23/2009, -3/+26This looks great. Do you think it will be a free service?
- lumio, on 06/24/2009, -1/+22Is is sad that if google took over the world I wouldn't mind one bit? Everything from them is awesome. lol
- AaronPDX, on 06/24/2009, -1/+20Yeah, damn them for trying to push the industry forward with genuine innovation in the implementation of current technology. As a consumer, your free, better-than-market-available products make me angry, Google.
- ryleyleckie, on 06/23/2009, -0/+18obviously it's web based
- pegothejerk, on 06/24/2009, -0/+17I REALLY like the custom scheduled ringing option, but what I need even more is an ex-girlfriends call/txt cutoff function from happy hour until 7:30 or so.
- AaronPDX, on 06/24/2009, -0/+15I agree with everything but the lol.
- AaronPDX, on 06/24/2009, -0/+12Why is that funny, and what's your point?
- vizerei, on 06/24/2009, -1/+11Wasn't this front-paged yesterday?
Oh wait, it's a power user, digg him up! /s - jrlcopy, on 06/24/2009, -0/+8It IS NOT illegal in the state of Florida to record phone calls... He doesn't know what he is talking about.
- joser916, on 06/24/2009, -1/+9yes its free i had mine for a long time i love it.
- cawpin, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6How is it illegal to record your own phone calls?
- AaronPDX, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6I'm sure they'll put something in place with consideration of local laws.
The point, as I understand it, is rather than having to go through a huge pain in the ass with transferring phone numbers and blah blah blah, you get one phone number with Google then route all your calls through there, so no matter what service you're using with whatever local phone number, you'll always have one number to provide people. Sounds amazingly convenient to me. I love Google. - collution, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5It won't come out of beta until it's perfect and it's getting damn close.
- GraceHead, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6at first, yes ...
- addakorn, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5The reason that Gmail is beta is because we are all the Guinea pigs for google's non beta corporate features.
- Cowboy1015, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4I'm not laughing
- nsapra, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4If it is free... i won't mind.. Beggars can't be choosers.
- deadguysleeps, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3"Recorded calls and voicemails can be downloaded as MP3 files"
how about supporting an open standard here, huh, google? - cawpin, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I hope they make the "do not ring during these hours" option customizable.
- jrlcopy, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4I am in the closed beta, I will NOT be switching this to my main number yet, the SMS has given me nothing but issues since I signed up only two weeks ago. I can send SMS to everyone, but when they reply I only actually receive the SMS's from a couple people. The service currently IS NOT RELIABLE yet.
- joser916, on 06/24/2009, -13/+16thats funny Gmail is still in beta...
- CeeJayDK, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2Speex would be an obvious choice.
- supermanred, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Sell Skype stock now.
- morninglorii, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2Over a million phone numbers is also over 9000 phone numbers!
- woofers07, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2Are you asking me?
- Azriel7, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2This is what I wrote on reddit about it:
I love google voice, if you still do not know what GV is, go to google and watch the videos of it to get an idea of what it is. I will be glad when this opens up to my friends so they will understand why I harp about it all the time. There are a few things I would love to see added to it:
*google talk/VOIP - this seems like no brainier and hopefully google is integrating google talk with google voice (instant skype killer).
*Multiple numbers to one account - Sometimes people move and go to a new area code, the current GV number will not do any good since it will be long distance. However if you change your GV number, it defeats the purpose of having a gv number. The best solution would be to keep your original GV number that will still work, but also have a new number added if you move. This should also apply to porting phone numbers, I have a phone number that I have had most of my life that people still call, but I have gotten people used to calling my gv number. I would like to port my number(s) to GV and just have it forward to the new number.
*Note taking - it would be nice if you could call your GV number and hit 4 to take voice notes.
*Record outgoing calls - You can only record incoming calls, we need the option to record outgoing calls as well.
*Transcribe everything option - so far, transcribe only works for voice messages received. It would be nice if we could transcribe recordings we make also.
*Virtual fax machine to receive and transmit faxes - TylerM, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2Well they plan to offer a free plan and paid plan as far as I can tell thus far.
- Azriel7, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2Here is google voice tweeter account:
http://twitter.com/googlevoice
Latest tweet:
"Lots of rumors, coverage, etc., about when Google Voice opens again. Trust me we're cranking away at it 24/7. Nothing to report yet..."
Does not sound promising but, hopefully something will happen soon. They need to at least open up the invites so some new people can try it out. I got lucky, I begged people on every beta invite forum for a couple of months to give me a google voice (grandcentral at the time) invite until some kind soul felt pity and gave me one. - dawpa2000, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2Look under your desk.
- Barbarino, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1It is, friend of mine lost in court on it. You have to tell them you are recording them.
- se7en11, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1I used Voice for a while but had some pretty bad delays during most of the calls. Now this was about 2 months ago so they may have fixed these issues, but it made it unusable for me.
Love the idea though and the transcripts of the voice mail to email was great! - rbansal, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1It is not a new news because I had already studied the news before 3 months ago here: http://appleiphoneandipod.blogspot.com/2009/03/goo ... where Google already had announced that “Google Voice will be available initially to existing users of GrandCentral, a service we acquired in July of 2007.”
- superkendall, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1On the iPhone that's called "Bad Decision Blocker" (or BDB for short). Renders the phone number and email address unusable for a preset period of time.
- 7aji, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Look in your pants.
- uptwolait, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1At least the U.S. government didn't buy it.
yet. - mga911, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1it seems that so many people are waiting to use google voice. I didn't know how fortunate i was to have an account. Its pretty cool. I especially like making callers, who are not on my list, say their names before I even answer.
- yocouchdigga, on 06/24/2009, -6/+7and bacon.
- Azriel7, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Here is a link to the vids that show all the stuff google voice can do:
https://www.google.com/voice/about - fr0mundacheese, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Guess you took the "Blue" pill?
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1"It has a number of killer features, such as support for switching between lines during the middle of a call and recording incoming calls by simply pressing a button. Recorded calls and voicemails can be heard directly in the browser through a streaming playback interface and can also be downloaded as MP3 files."
Cause ya just never know when an old voicemail will come in handy. - Barackalypse, on 06/24/2009, -3/+3Sadly, GrandCentral had a better UI and more reliable service. On several occasions since migrating to Google Voice 2 months ago people calling my number have received messages that it is no longer in service. In over a year on GrandCentral I never once had a complaint over this.
- ravi7791, on 06/24/2009, -4/+4I've been using it for quite a while now. Making calls is quick and simple. when someone calls your number, your caller id shows the callers number rather than some google voice number which is great imo.
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1don't remember the article that hit the fb couple days ago? sueing little guys. they are a little evil, but just have reallly good PR
- TylerM, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1Well there are a ton of things that Google would have to do to make this "perfect". One would be to compete with RingCentral.com.
This is almost like Google is going into the Virtual PBX market. - megacia, on 06/24/2009, -0/+0check out the "Friends of Google Voice" group on facebook for a chance to get an invite
- j0rd0n420, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1Oops, I meant: I don't know for sure. My bad.
- j0rd0n420, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1I think you have to get the other persons permission. I don't for sure, I don't live there.
