- aamer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+67Nice. I really like uTorrent, but the fact that this is open source is a plus for me.
- theshalit, on 07/22/2008, -3/+66I need tetris in a torrent client. Anything less is *****.
- Shogi, on 07/22/2008, -1/+37I don't see how a change of owners automatically makes a damn good client bad.
- Shogi, on 07/22/2008, -3/+29Until it has all the functionality of uTorrent, I think I'll pass.
- nthitz, on 07/22/2008, -10/+32Transmission on OSX FTW
- Yousty, on 07/22/2008, -2/+23FTA: "So far there is no support for disk caching, seeding preferences and torrent queuing, but these and other features are on the to do list, and will be implemented in the future."
I'd say these are pretty important features for a lot of users. Give me a call when these get implemented and I'll try it out. - Kizzard, on 07/22/2008, -6/+24With uTorrent selling out to BitTorrent Inc, I really think Halite could really be a winner.
- robbyjo, on 07/22/2008, -2/+13Direct link: http://www.binarynotions.com/halite-bittorrent-cli ...
- ahawks, on 07/22/2008, -1/+9At first I thought this looked identical to uTorrent, so I wasn't all that interested.
But the fact that it shows files in a nested dir structure instead of a flat list sold me. I'll try it out soon!

http://torrentfreak.com/images/halite_0301classic. ... - positron, on 07/22/2008, -2/+9Try Deluge. It's very similar to uTorrent, but is open source and has a plug-in style extensibility.
- nonsequitor, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6An honest question, but it is open source so that would be caught rather quickly.
- LocalDocal, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6Personally, I love uTorrent; it works for me and it has all the features that I could want. Nonetheless, I did give Halite a try, but truthfully, it wasn't really that special. The interface needed a lot of work and, frankly, uTorrent already uses so little resources that Halite using 10MB of RAM instead of uTorrent's 20MB doesn't really register as important to me.
- Pronation, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6uTorrent isn't bad, but neither is Halite.
Both are good clients with there own advantages over the other.
Good to see Halite is finally getting the attention it deserves. - Otto, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6If it doesn't have an automated RSS reader/grabber, then it's pretty useless to me as a torrent client.
- eavesdrop, on 07/22/2008, -1/+6There is arctic torrent for Win32 which is open source, but it's very minimal http://www.int64.org/arctic.html
- arjie, on 07/22/2008, -3/+8Since everyone else seems to want to mention their favourite clients, here's mine: rtorrent on a separate box that I access using SSH. Why that way? Because if something is going to be on for a long amount of time I'd prefer this Celeron processor to the Pentium IV on my desktop and the Core 2 Duo on my laptop.
- jorel314, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5Deluge on Ubuntu has been working great for me. The default of having unlimited connections slowed my internet to a crawl though. After setting it to about 200 connections it's been smooth sailing.
- hungryduck, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5Works great on Linux too. If it had an easy to install windows port it could easily replace my uTorrent.
- ajocksch, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5I don't think the Bitorrent client "market" is as anti-competitive as the article seams to suggest. The fact that all these are free means that there's very little to stop people from trying out another client. All you need is a good interface and good features and you could be a contender.
Besides, look what happened to Azeurus. Used to be a (at least decent) contender, then it got bloated and a good chunk of its user base (including myself) abandoned it. Same could happen with any other client. - redscofield, on 07/22/2008, -5/+10I'm still in love with Transmission... works like a champ... never dumps out... always remembers... and i have as much control as i need...
- erikerikerik, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4interesting, I would love to give this puppy a once overy but with out the support of disk caching and torrent queuing I'm going to hold onff and keep with bitTytrant. And before you say booooo for using a "cheating," client I do seed everything to 1.5 :p
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4much better - its quicker, cleaner, uses less memory
- nullx42, on 07/22/2008, -2/+6In unrelated news: Sales in tinfoil hats rose dramatically.
- MattBD, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4Have you tried Deluge? I use that in both Windows and Linux and I love it.
- cowboy77061, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3less bugs too.
- mrbradg, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Until one can fix my bittorrent throttling problem....I really don't care for any of them. :(
- SpyDerMann, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Being open source is "a plus"? It's the selling point!
It's a guarantee that it'll never become malware polluted and that it won't "phone home" to the MAFIAA or any govt. angency. It can be improved over time by "we, the people" and it will never become obsolete (unless it runs out of maintainers). - kidd3ckz, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3man you are so cool for typing out micro.
im ur biggest fan - dbr_onix, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Err, checking for updated versions?
- bratterscain, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3I don't think he said uTorrent is bad. But Halite being open source, it's all of ours to use and make better if we wish and it could be comparable to uTorrent though I haven't tried it. It looks promising.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Is it better than Azureus/Vuze?
- danielman94, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3I haven't updated my Azureus since I first tried Transmission, so maybe I'm wrong now, but I really like Transmission because it's fast and snappy. Azureus was too sluggish and bloated, I thought. But, like I said, I haven't tried Azureus lately.
- kleverness, on 07/22/2008, -1/+4KTorrent 3 rocks! Soon, when KDE4 is ready for a Windows release, KTorrent will be the best bittorrent client for Windows too ;)
However, it's nice to see another open source client emerging :) - Kizzard, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2uTorrent selling out doesn't bother me, and I think it is still an outstanding client. But I know that to a lot of people, it was a big issue. Do you remember how many people switched to Azureus? I was just surmising that Halite may get the attention it deserves because of that.
- pkulak, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3The best, lightweight client is, and will continue to be, rTorrent.
- enterneo, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2how much RAM do you have?
- bjornski, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Azureus lost me when it turned into Vuze.
The media sharing stuff is kinda neat for a bit, but as a regular BT client, I hated it.
I still fire it up now and then just to look at a few music videos and movie preview tho. It's still neat. - dbr_onix, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Transmission now does all the important things, like DHT, peer-encryption, selective file-downloading, per-torrent speed control. It is also very stable (The stats say it's been running for a total 100 days, 9 hours and 25 minutes, and I cannot remember a single crash). With 10 torrents loaded (although most with only one or two files) it's using about 18MB of physical memory, and is using a trivial amount of CPU.
Oh, and now most trackers (private or otherwise) now allow Transmission.
I suppose it doesn't do torrent-RSS-parsing, but I just manually check through a few RSS feeds, or there are several applications that do it far better anyway (TED, TV Shows) - slugicide, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Windows-only.
- zosoIV, on 07/22/2008, -4/+6You can't beat playing Tetris while you wait for season six of 24 to finish downloading.
- AtomB, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3Since it's open source and already running on Linux and windows I hope it ends up on the mac. uTorrent should have hit the mac already but they are dragging their feet big time.
- nonsequitor, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2BitTyrant is not cheating, it just uses game theory to maximize your results. It will upload to choked peers if there's any bandwidth leftover from the uploading to the peers which you are downloading from. From an optimization standpoint, the theory is sound, its just non-optimal for the swarm. However, it does not "hurt" large swarms, and even helps small swarms get high quality seeds faster. It just selectively distributes your upstream bandwidth, it is not a "lying" client (which is cheating).
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+22 GB
- dbr_onix, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2What advantages does Halite have over uTorrent? (Not "it's open source", but actual features and such..)
- antdude, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I prefer using BitTorrent's Python scripts.
- jpinsonault, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I bet it does. But you could probably just use the native linux version =P
- nonsequitor, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I tried Transmission a couple years ago and it did not allow per torrent throttling and other fairly standard features. It also was unstable and resulted in that client being banned from the trackers I use.
- matriculated, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Deluge really needs to get the word out. It's matches almost all the important features of Azureus and uTorrent (encryption, blocklists) and has a similar interface. Plus it's crossplatform.
- sark666, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2is it? That middle shot looks like nix. It's definitely using gtk2, which can be used in windows but usually the gtk2 theme doesn't look like that except in a nix environment, but maybe I'm wrong.
- inyearstocome, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2My concern with uTorrent is that it now phones home to BitTorrent--which is on PeerGuardians block list. The concern may be unfounded, but why should it have to phone home?
