"Democracy was introduced to China almost single-handedly"
Do in

then google.cn with the 'hack'
1st result on google.com is correct
google.cn returns results, but none are right
google.cn with 'hack' returns nothing
gg, you loose.
Type
democracy china (example given) in

compare to
google.cn matches closer then google.cn with 'hack'

just to really piss off the China gov ;-) - KingChango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Putting this hack on digg basically killed it for anyone tha would really need to use it in China.
- porterlangley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this just proves, people will always find a way. No matter what they do, information will find a way to be exchanged. They can slow it down and make it tough, but the hacks will keep coming, and inevitably people will find a way to get the info they want/need.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt this actually works in China.
- ericscampbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do we have any confirmation that this works in China (behind China's "great firewall")?
- Dogtanian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent! Here's hoping Google don't go out of their way to patch this.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can they see this digg though?

You're right. I just checked and it seems that even though the results change, the censorship is not lifted. Oh, well.

Any person in China with half a bit of sense could figure out how to use a proxy through VPN over SSL to bypass those firewalls. - raven001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The best way to kill a great hack is to post it on a widely used public forum. You should have let it circulate quietly on the internet underground.
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0See, here's the thing about censorship and tech, Mr. Central Party Chairman: it doesn't work.
Remember that whole Napster thing, when the RIAA tried forcing Napster to filter all searches for copyrighted material?
We just changed the names. "Metallica" became "Metalicca," or "Mittelica."
So then they shut Napster down completely. And guess what happened.
Hundreds of new P2P clients sprung up, and so-called "piracy" increased a million-fold.
Understand this: information wants to be free.
A determined and motivated populace will ALWAYS find a way around oppression.
It's inexorable. - monkeymad2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well duh, i was replacing it with UK when i was checking what was being cencored, didn't think that many people didn't know about it....
and knowing the chinnesse gov. they would have banned all other googles except .cn so it would be unlikely this would work.
digg anyway - TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All the sites that google doesn't show results for are blocked by China's firewall anyway. All this is a moot point. No access because of China. Google just doesn't show those results.

- 3ch0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im on a chinese proxy right now. And its quite funny, wikipedia is blocked... But google is working fine, And as mention i really dont see the fuzz. Google just filterd out the content that is totaly blocked in china.
I couldnt access amnesty international USA from that proxy... ; - oneoffmanmental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Auntie Beeb doesn't exist in google.cn

I'm in Jiangsu, China. - mezolithico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys do realize, that Google probably intentionally left 'hacks' and backdoors to bypass the Chinese governement's firewall. I
- spellcheckd, on 06/28/2009, -0/+0"Can we get a digg.cn that filters this content from government officials in China? I'm not sure you can tell through the Great Firewall if they're from government IP's or not, but it'd be kinda cool to censor them from all the hacks that are thought of on the free-internet."
lol all IP's in china a untimately government owned/controlled. no need for gov.cn hahaha - matperk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the chinese govt probably has a good amount of people focusing their lives on restricting the internet. If it works, this will be discovered shortly.
- drfishy520, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if this does work, it won't last long. Especially since it's on the front page of digg
- Audobahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this doenst work behind filters like bess though..
- Mr.Glass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i had feeling google wouldnt make it too hard
- monkeymad2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or a person who's currently in china, i cant tell.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fireprox.com
duh - donkeyk0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"nice to know where america's priorities stand"
grim representative of usa? can you say 'sampling error'? - mrfloppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmmmm.... but will it work for people inside china? digg anyways
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hopefullt elgoog wont be blocked it wasent the last time something like this happend
http://www.alltooflat.com/geeky/elgoog/m/index.cgi
hard to use but still cool. some one should make a mirror like that but have it work like regular google. - Lockhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am currently living in China and can therefore confirm that tis "hack" works.
It's really amazing how much content the Chinese government still blocks.
Nice find, noamsml! I "digg" it! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's just call it "CHOOGLE"
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cut footage of an interesting panel discussion called “Blogging without Borders: Bridging the Digital Content Divide” for SXSW 2005. It focused on delivering uncensored content to users in China and Iran and featured Jonas Luster and Ze Frank. One of the panelists from China estimated 60-70% of student age people used proxy servers to defeat the "Great Firewall of China".
- dhakbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I've used Google.ca since the day I've got here, never noticed any censoring or the like, and it's faster than google.com.cn. Google.ca will bring up Chinese results anyways, just make sure you have the result language set to all languages."
You "never noticed any censoring or the like"? No *****? Maybe that's because they aren't putting big red bars over everything they don't want you to see. They just remove it so that you don't see it in the first place, moron. Try searching for Tiananmen Square news reports. Try searching for the great leap forward. Then get on a proxy and do the same searches from any other country. - spellcheckd, on 06/28/2009, -0/+0im in china atm. and YES this does work.
i think google will leave this hack "open". google are smart - they obviously knew this flaw existed when they launched. they knew this flaw would be exposed (so simple). and they already know what the chinese government's reaction will be (they probably have a clause in contract that states that the chinese gov accept the "revised" version of google and no further changes will need to be made)
if they thought that this flaw would cause major problems after exposure they would have fixed it before launch - ShosuroYuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What part of America is Russia again? I want to go there to stop the American spam is is obviously more important than human rights.
- reets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"No, this doesn't work, you can try:
http://www.google.cn/search?hl=zh-CN&q=site:epochtimes.com&meta=cr%3DcountryBR"
That doesn't work on any google search. Keep up the good work! - spellcheckd, on 06/28/2009, -0/+0quote
No, this doesn't work, you can try:
http://www.google.cn/search?hl=zh-CN&q=site:ep0chtimes.com&meta=cr%3DcountryBR
end quote
stupid comment. its quite obvious that ALL url's that contain ep0chtimes.com will be sensored because of that keyword in the url. it is not a google imposed limitation.
im in china now and the blocking is annoying and unorganised. many sites are banned unjustly, for example, all bl0gspot.com blogs are blocked. but i use TOR proxies to overcome the blocking when necessary - tvolpe78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd be interested in seeing more about what China has decided to Censor... haven't seen a good list of these yet...
- ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I heard a podcast recently that reported that searching via elgooG , Google's mirror site, gets people around the great firewall. Apparently thats from the host themselves. CNET Buzzcast from the 26th I believe was the episode.
- perkelation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I would suggest fixing things in the US before even worrying about china. what do you want thier productivity to go up or something...its bad enough now that we import so many goods from asia. I am sure the rest our citizens are just chomping a the bit to take those hamburger flipping jobs when everything else is outsourced"
um please don't believe the bs that outsourcing is bad for our economy. yes it is bad for the individuals that lose their jobs, but overall we have a higher standard of living because of moving menial jobs overseas. - ch1ckster, on 03/04/2009, -0/+0You should rename this title "Reason #134 Why China Should Just Block Google Entirely"... Which they will if Google can keep up their end of the deal to censor specific websites.
- Smilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If (and there will be) there is a hack for Google China to allow full results, it should be passed around a tech underground of Chinese people who can use the hole for good cause. To be posted on digg as the latest cool thing of the day, one can be sure within 24 hours the Chinese government will have the "bug" patched. I hope everyone here is having a lot of fun taking part in this digg...... and I am sure about 2 billion people who do not yet have a computer would like me to thank you all on their behalf as well.
- kuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Happy New Year!
- oddlove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's works only on google.cn(not google.com), and , it's funny to find that the result is less then before ;—)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that was quick
lol @ CHOOGLE - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I knew google woudn't be let the chinaese goverment have it there way.Didn't bill gates defended googles postion and now it's be hacke lol
- Vlatro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weather or not this works, anyone with half a brain in china could go through one of the millions of free proxys outside of china. They can't blacklist all those IPs. Not to mention, there are thousands of smaller search engines that the Chinese government hasn't addressed yet, and you can be damn sure not all of them have the resources to comply with their standards even if they wanted to. And how they they think they're going to stop RSS feeds on banned information. Google is playing ball w/ china to keep ad revenue in the most populated country in the world. Good job google. The Chinese government is run by a bunch of idiots and Google knows this. Censorship only leads to an elitist perception for individuals who know the truth, and that makes the information being withheld more desirable. China's playing with fire here. This incident won't be a big deal for most people in China, but the net effect of their government thinking this is an acceptable practice will lead to much bigger problems for them.
- Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0might be blocked but if it isn't it would work better then elgoog http://www.scroogle.org/
- bionicpill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can we get a digg.cn that filters this content from government officials in China? I'm not sure you can tell through the Great Firewall if they're from government IP's or not, but it'd be kinda cool to censor them from all the hacks that are thought of on the free-internet.
- monkeymad2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why does no-one pay any attention to a Chinese person who has tried it and says it doesn't work?
it's just changing what feild the results are in like "filetype:" -
