- kevinrose, on 11/14/2007, -11/+168Mark is building a solid company, and has no reason to sell to anyone..ever.. Facebook is fast, stable (no error messages), and has better features than MySpace. I've made the switch.
oo, and I made a Diggnation group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2264338778 - Erisar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+54I know a lot of people who have switched over as well. The software itself still could use some tweaking, but it is still far more stable than MySpace and much less visually (and auditorily) annoying.
I'll be making the switch over myself soon. Please everyone do the same. :D - inactive, on 11/14/2007, -7/+37Facebook is okay, but 1 billion dollars is better.
Sell out before the hype is over. Get out and enjoy life. - Shayer, on 11/14/2007, -4/+24About time! Everyone I know has started to ditch myspace for facebook. It's more simple, organized, and sleeker, as opposed to myspace (clutter, ads, ugly customizations) Myspace is now the home of both mainstream and amateurs bands, musicians, and movie studios advertising themselves.
- PURDooM, on 11/14/2007, -0/+17I met this guy about 3 weeks ago at "Startup school" at Princeton University, California. While the G-Mail founder, Paypal founder, and Lotus 123 founders gave great presentations concerning their products, their successes, and their tips, Marks presentation was horrible. He had no slides. He spent the entire time bragging about his product. "Facebook has over 6 billion pictures!" He never cracks a smile and overall acts like a huge jerk.
This guy isn't a genius. The impression I got was he created this software just for fun at Harvard and it became a success by accident. He doesn't deserve the praise we are giving him. - thedarksyde, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I would sell for enough to not ever work again. At my current lifestyle I would be happy, at 300 million or anything like that I would jump at the chance. No discussion with the wife, no discussion with anyone, just a where do I sign. 300 million is enough for anything I will ever want to do, including 2, 3 and 4 chicks at the same time.
- nsjoker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Agreed, MySpace is visual vomit. People have customized their pages to the point of insanity and it's just become ridiculous. I know it's only a matter of time until I have an epileptic seizure induced by bright pink colored backgrounds, surveys I don't care about, and the hyped up weekend scene documented with "crazy MySpace pics". The whole music auto-starting is a bummer too.
- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16though, i liked it when it was college exclusive, but it is a great site, it runs fast and like kevin said, it has no error messages. I've never had spam, no annoying ad's and all my friends have it.
- h4rdcor3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15The embedded music is one of the things I HATE about myspace. I'll be jammin to my music and then I visit someone's page and all of a sudden their is this crap blaring out of my speakers. Myspace music should play automatically. Thats what the play button is for.
- h4rdcor3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12didn't see it before. the second to last sentence should be
"Myspace shouldn't play music automatically" - Shayer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Horrible idea. If you want music, open your media player software. No reason whatsoever to have it on facebook.

-Old Persian Saying - killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9if any of your friends are in college, chances are they are on facebook...
- FairlyStupid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Exactly. FB seems like a big accidental success, considering that MZ had the entire Harvard "ears", money from friends and rich family, and Harvard people wrote to other university students, and BOOM, FB was a hit. But hey, why not for a billion dollars.
- therealrico, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Here's a crazy thought, you could have a myspace account and a facebook account, its such a crazy idea it just might work!
- locojones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Anything else is a distraction."
Hey Mark, you know what else is distracting, 1 billion dollars! Believe me, rolling around in 10,000,000 $100 bills is a lot more fun than building something long term. Besides, in your niche, long term is like 12 months. - h4rdcor3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6blank
- snoonan77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I saw a presentation by him as well. He wasn't able to articulate how or why facebook was successful or offer any insight or wisdom about the space or business in general. He's got some very good skills, no doubt, but I don't really see Mark as a business leader or a prophet or anything like that. As a consultant in Boston, I have met and worked with a good number of his colleagues. I hate to say it, but he's honestly out of his league right now.
His Next "Mark Zuckerburg Production" should be something more traditional to round out his experience and give him more of an appreciation for what it means to grow a business that doesn't catch fire and take off mostly by accident. Facebook has probably warped his view of reality. - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not defending Myspace or anything, but you can set it up in your preferences, so that music on other people's pages does not start automatically. This was the very first thing I did, and my ears thank me for it.
- PURDooM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My bad, I meant Stanford.
Someone giving a review of same presentation I saw:
http://photomatt.net/2007/03/24/kapor-vs-zuckerberg/ - InternetDisease, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If you're a moneyed rich kid who leaves Harvard to start a multi-million dollar business (looking your way, Bill Gates), you really shouldn't be considered a "drop-out." At least not in the same way that we consider Andrew Jackson, Sydney Poitier, or any other accomplished person to be a "drop-out."
- Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Facebook is good because it is simple and easy to use. Then you have myspace... disreguarding the fact that Myspace is full of 12 year old emos and goths, the format of it is completely impossible to use. Their entire friend system is flawed across the board, the whole customizable song/backround and the whole deal are effing annoying, the site is riddled with viruses, theyve sold out, and everyone always tries to embed stuff but always screw up somewhere and leave bad coding on their page. Not to mention it lacks lots of the features that makes facebook cool and functional as an actual social networking site.
You almost cant make it through college without using facebook. Not only is it an easy way to connect with people, but it makes planning events and gathering people so easy. Thats why its going to be around for years to come. - 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes, facebook is better than myspace. isn't this old news?
- Anteros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He is already set for life, he has no need to sell for money. Whatever happens with facebook he is still very likely to walk away with a nice amount of money or a very decent income from it, maybe he misses out on the $300+ million he could of had now and has to settle for $30 million or something later down the road (if things go badly)
Sell now and he loses control of the company he loves. - snipes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No music. I agree with Shayer.
Maybe some kind of plugin that links your iTunes playlists or recent songs (as seen on www.virb.com) to a section in your Facebook profile, but that's about it. - Raphoroni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he is dumbass. Myspace and facebook are fads and will fade like everything else. If someone offers me a billion dollars for it then i'd sell it in a second. If you get even a couple million you never have to work a day in your life again. Take the billion you idiot
- ScarHawk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4To everyone who says FaceBook is a social networking site and ergo a fad, I think your missing the point. Thats why facebook is so much better then Myspace or whatever other sites are out there. It has made inroads to every age and demographic, and is working nicely to scale that way. Where as most junior high and high school students will "out grow" myspace, facebook is clean and pro enough that you don't out grow it; it grows with you and evolves as your desires change.
I finally singed up a month or so ago to facebook, albiet a bit grudgingly. I had gotten a myspace awhile ago, but only because so many people (as well as some bands, I'll admit) were on it. But I set it up for email notification and never logged in unless I had to. When people ask me if I have a myspace, I kind of look at the ground and say "Well yes, but I'm not proud of it." Its only a half-joke- myspace's site is so gaudy, its immature, its got an MTV sort of vibe, or worse yet, a pedophile sort of vibe. But when I signed up for facebook I was impressed- the site made sense. It had advertising but it wasn't blaringly obnoxious or offenseive. The site is built around the real way humans network- it just makes sense. Then I discovered just how many people I knew were on it and it was even better.
Now I part of the half of all users on facebook who visit the site daily. It deserves the praise its getting. And I say good-on the creators for not selling and focusing instead on growing their site and keeping up their reputation. - h4rdcor3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyone ever think that he doesn't really care about the money? Sure everyone has their price but when you create something from scratch and then it becomes so big that you have to hire people to help you run it, it gives you a since of accomplishment. If I created something that millions of people use daily and didn't think anyone else could do a better job without compromising the idea behind it I wouldn't sell either.
- swindmill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I heard him do an interview on NPR, and I couldn't believe how stupid he sounded. I'm not exaggerating when I say it sounded like a 5th grader was being interviewed. Not only was he remarkably inarticulate, he said things that left you wondering if he was well below normal intelligence.
- amowls, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7but why would you want a myspace profile in the first place?
- ckSubs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But we don't WANT any of that *****.
- opus3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is this not the same person that sells our information to the Feds?
virb.com is what social sites should be.... - salivalnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4These websites are fads. Seriously. I know this is scary, but in five years time, digg as it is today will be a thing of the past. The idea digg is founded on - which boils down to democracy, essentially - will always be around. But other, different methods will come along to replace it in time. They may not be "better" but they might win through ease of use or convenience of delivery, or something similar. A bit like newsgroups and IRC which have lost a lot of their pull over the last ten years (to web-based forums and instant messaging, respectively). Sure they're still around but in no where near the strength or penetration they used to be.
The only way I can see the likes of digg and FaceBook lasting is through continued diversification. Google may be synonymous with 'internet search' if you ask a dictionary, but it's much more than that now - earth, desktop, etc. This is the key to Google's success. First and foremost it's doing something that no-one else has done to date, and then continuing that trend ad infinitum.
Of course, that too will eventually come to an end.
I'm not saying Zuckerberg is stupid. Far from it. If you want to equate smarts to wealth, most of us aren't sitting on a billion dollars. But if I *was* sitting on a billion dollar asset that has a half-life of five years, I'd sell it. Now. Every bubble will burst eventually, and I'm sure in twenty years when he's working at a hydrogen refuelling station to make ends meet, he'll wonder why he doesn't have a billion dollars in the bank.
Assuming, of course, he doesn't have five aces up his sleeve. Time will tell. - aussieNickuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As much as I would love having enough money to not have to work for the rest of my life......what the hell would I do 7 days a week for the next 60 years?
- j0se, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess whats why you wont sell digg either. Building...
- Upsizer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's not about the money with something like Facebook. It's knowing the fact that you created something that so many people enjoy in their everyday lives.
- Ransomowris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Enuriel
At first I thought that read "Old Person Saying" - Jeezoflip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sadly though, as good as facebook is, eventually it will get crapped up like myspace as it gets more popular with facebook virus type things like myspace has now :(. So sad to do to such a good website. I do like facebook a lot better than myspace.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ummm, isn't that how most sites make money? There's nothing wrong with advertising.
- MacDoug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Methinks he doth protest too much. What's wrong with selling, Kevin? :)
- ScarHawk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I don't know what the heck just happend to the above comment, but it apparently got cut off. Digg it down if you wish.
I was just pointing out that facebook is way different the myspace in the sense that its not a fad at all. You outgrow a myspace, but facebook grows with you. Its not gaudy like myspace. Myspace is obnoxious, its immature, it has an MTV sort of vibe. Facebook on the other hand makes sense- it really works around the ways the people naturally network. Its genius, and its scalable all the way through your life span as far as I'm concerned. I have a myspace, but I'm not proud of it. I actually want to log on to face book everyday. Myspace I avoid like the plague unless I HAVE to log in to answer a question or something. - doshindude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Facebook has overtaken myspace. it's about time something did.
and it's damn awesome. Everyone is converting now. I just hope facebook doesn't screw this up. It's great now, i just hope they don't modify it to be like myspace. - Anteros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Businesses buy space to promote their products on facebook in return for money

- snipes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If he's comfortable at this point in time, let the man be.
Maybe he doesnt want the money to change him or the company to be in the wrond hands....he sounds like he just wants to keep the people happy. He might have the mindset of "I you want something done right, do it yourself"...hence him keeping the comany. - swindmill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hit wrong reply
- thehuntedpossum, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5and with that attitude you will never make 300 million dollars. the people who are driven enough to succeed like this are the workaholic type who don't just dump their projects.
- sirchadlington, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4There is a very big privacy concern and conspiracy around FB
check it out: http://albumoftheday.com/facebook/ - shrock, on 03/29/2009, -0/+0i'm an idiot. lol.
