- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had used Kiplingers Taxcut for years, when Block bo't it. It has downhill every year. THey are trying to fold it into Turbo Tax, and the mindset of the people using Taxcut is totally different, and more business oriented than Turbo Tax for Dummies. I tried the Turbo Tax program two time, several years apart and could not make heads or tails of it.
Went back to Taxcut even tho it cost more at that time. It still does I think, since I found, this year, that I had to upgrade from deluxe to Godzilla, to get the same answers from the program... Those rebates don't mean *****, when it come to taxes. I want the ***** to be right. And to help me.... Hell, I can read the damn tax code and make my own decisions, but this NOT the idea. You want to know what the great unwashed masses are doing, and to go right along with it.....
I am sick of Block. Kiplinger had somebody who made sure the stuff worked, and Block just pumps it out. THIS year, the deal is, I am done with my taxes but they haven't finalized the Keought IRA forms, and WON'T until mid march!!! So much for getting a timely tax return.
If I knew of something different, I would change, even if cost me more.. Taxes are no laughing matter, and nothiong for them to blow up, cause they didn't think of something!!! What the hell we paying them for, if they can't do that much.?????
Piss on HR Block. They are giving the clients the shaft, and I don't think they care......

- sk545, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0H&R sucks.
- RubeusEsclair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0H&R did my federal for free. Had my biggest return ever.
- masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For Canadians: http://www.ufile.ca - use coupon code UF0428MHY8 for $4.00 CDN OFF until Feb 28th - I've personally used this for the last 3 years and its stupidly simple and accurate - previously I would work it all out myself on paper and have never had a problem, or readjustment.
Since its web-based - it works on both Linux/WIndows and in Firefox, Mozilla, and IE. - heff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just filed federal (free) and state ($20) with them, their system for finding deductions saved me a TON of cash.

Crazy.
But yeah, I do my own taxes. If I didn't, I would hire the CPA I had do them before who did great for me. Not going to take mine to the Walmart/Blockbuster of tax preperation. - bignate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did mine on H&R this year. My federal got REJECTED. I called the IRS and they said the efile was wrong, H&R had not properly filled in one of the forms. There was a line which was supposed to be an AUTOMATIC TOTAL of previously entered data, and their system just left it blank.
I called H&R, and spent about three days going through their various levels of support. Their final response? "What do you know! It really is broken, and it really IS our fault. Sorry." Me: "Are you going to fix it?" Them: "Nope, we'll just refund your money so you can file somewhere else."
I was happy that they did the RIGHT thing in refunding my money, but makes you wonder how many other people the bug affected (my taxes are pretty standard, I itemize only for the interest I pay on my mortgage). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good thing I went with turbotax this year.

I can see this type of oversight in a company that large. - VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they ***** hire this wanna-be tax preparers that dont know jack ***** and take a 1 week class on how to train to talk to customers... they ***** blow. serious

- xero9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For Canadians, QuickTax Web is also pretty good. Used them the past 2 years. Only $20, plus $10 for each additional return, and free if you make less than $25,000. Their interface is really good, in my opinion. http://www.quicktaxweb.ca
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@oldcyborg
the answer is hire a professional. - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Way to go, 'Block!
Fix your accounting first, THEN worry 'bout our taxes, mm'kay?
Digg for hilarity. - berzerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats like microsoft putting out bad softwa..... oh wait. nevermind.
- brimanp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work for H&R Block, and it is not H&R Block screwing up on these individual tax returns. It is the fact that there are too many stupid people everywhere so unfortunately H&R Block gets stuck with some every year. That is why you should never let first year tax preparers touch your return. If they are still around in year two they know what they are you doing.

D - Tkkt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0H&R Block screwed up on my taxes this year. After telling me I had a $28 tax return, I refused to let them file my return then did it myself on the Canadian government's netfile program. Guess what, $190 coming back to me and none to H&R Block.
- inotocracy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well this is unsettling, I just had my taxes done by them (third year in a row now) earlier this week. I already got my return check (rapid refund), so I hope everything checks out. I'll be pissed if I get a notice from the Gov. saying my taxes are fubar'd.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ So in other words, H&R Block is screwing up tax returns by hiring incompetent people. Thanks for the info.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"H&R did my federal for free. Had my biggest return ever."
You realize that that is a bad thing, right? That means the government has been taking too much out of your paycheck, and they are earning interest on your money, and you are not. You are losing potential revenue, plus interest on that revenue. Also, has little to do with H&R block, Whomever did your taxes LAST year is the one to blame, as they could have changes your liabilities/deductions to make up for it, or advised you to pay taxes differently.
In effect, you just admitted to making a serious tax blunder. - FreedomNeocon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know I'm late to the party, but I just had to add to it.
Today I was greeted with a lien on my paycheck. After some phone calls I found that Maryland didn't see a Maryland tax return for 2003 and so filed one for me assuming my Federal income return as a guide.
I didn't file a Maryland return because I moved in October from Pennsylvania. I had filed PA state taxes, and federal taxes, but wasn't required to pay MD State taxes due to being a 'partial resident', not making enough income in-state while still paying PA taxes.
I would think Maryland would not have 'assumed' that unless they didn't see any PA return, though since I filed it and have all my receipts from HR Block it should have been done. Meanwhile letters were being sent to an old address (that I had to fix today, not sure why change of address worked for other mail and not those) and I'm left with over $2,000 in back taxes and fees from a $122 Pennsylvania return that was not filed (causing a MD return filed substituted instead, and subsequent fines/fees).
To add insult to injury I can't get back into the HR Block account I used because the password is gone, and in order to reset it you MUST have the same credit card you used originally with HR still in use.
If you moved, or have a new credit card (mine expired in 2005 that I had used) you are ***** out luck and are locked out of your records. I need the (?incomplete?rejected?) PA return to resolve the MD issue, I have the original registration emails from HR, I have my Order Number and Transition Code from the payment email they sent, I offered to give them or fax any info I had to (including birth certificate, etc) and was told that I couldn't do anything and "that's just the way it is".
Whorrayy for RIP OFFS like H&R Block... AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! - FatD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You just can't make something like this up, lol

Uhh.. No that's wrong, they UNDERSTATED their liabilities by that much, meaning their income appeared to be 32 million dollars HIGHER, meaning their taxes were that much MORE, meaning it was NOT in their favor, which is probably why they said something ;) - sethj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.fairtax.org
Its pretty bad when the tax preparers cant get it right. Maybe it is time for something different. - karma22178, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got my taxes done at HR Block this year... told me my refund was $1,580 -ok, cool- i get my refund, it's $4,600!! IRS sent me a letter saying "your refund amount was incorrect" I ALMOST LOST $3,000 BECAUSE OF THOSE ***** IDIOTS AND HR BLOCK. Lawsuit? Maybe not... but I sure as hell am getting my $110 back I paid for those ***** ups to do my taxes wrong.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Costed me $105 to do my taxes this year at H&R Block.. :( Four years ago it was like $80. Damn them, and now I have to worry they didn't get it right?! The lady that did mine was clueless about my taxes, I had to repeatedly tell her how to read my Military W-2.
I wish they taught taxes in High School, and they were easy enough for the common person to figure out. One problem I've had is them trying to take Wage tax out of Active Duty military pay, and giving me my first notice 3 years later with late fees, yet the green form says wage tax can't be taken out of Active Duty pay. Plus I had another W-2, Bank Interest, GI-Bill, College Deductions, Unemployment Comp, etc.. No way I could figure all that stuff out when they are activly working against me. - hipyn8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just got the notice about a class action lawsuit against block and joined up, but it said if every1 did id get like 2$!
- rocha344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hi, they sent me a class action suit to sign up on too, but in my state it could be like $60 for the last 4 years. I lost the paper, Do you have the address still? Or email address to it? I'd like to sign up and get some of the $$$ they got from me!! Thanks
- hipyn8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm new to this site, but had to join to discuss this. and is there a way to bypass having to enter a code every time i want to type!?
