- chewbie, on 05/13/2008, -0/+22I work for EDS and the news was on wikipedia sooner than the e-mail sent by Ron Rittenmeyer.
Digg rules btw - chanop, on 05/13/2008, -0/+12This just cuts into the IBM monopoly. Should give them much more competition
- terrachronos, on 05/13/2008, -1/+14Yes but can HP remove all the SUCK from EDS
- loobis, on 05/13/2008, -4/+13Yeah, you are the only one. They were one of the biggest IT employers before they started dumping everything to India. Hell, 50% of diggers have probably worked for them at some point, and 90% of us probably work with someone that worked at EDS. They are easy to spot with their extensive use of buzzwords and love of meetings.
- loobis, on 05/13/2008, -1/+9Wow. I really didn't think my comment was that bad, depending on how you read it. I don't think I can misread yours though...
- nahsrocketeer75, on 05/13/2008, -0/+11Yes, the deal is done, but … "We are – and will remain – EDS," CEO Ron Rittenmeyer assures his troops in an e-mail distributed this morning. Would you buy that? Full text here: http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/27738
- tipexy, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8EDS, the biggest company that people outside the industry have never heard of.
- RealmDown, on 05/13/2008, -2/+9You forgot the tip.
- Enochyang, on 05/13/2008, -1/+9wtf is wrong with you
- Neoisamu, on 05/13/2008, -5/+13EDS currently has a contract with the Navy and Marine Corps called "NMCI". They came in a few years back and ousted a bunch of government IT Workers with low paid, untrained employee's that only requirement they had was a proper clearance and knew what a computer was. Their computer systems are poorly configured and are notorious for crashing. How do I know? I'm using an NMCI computer right now and am a fortunate government IT Worker that wasn't affected. If anyone wanted to call fraud and abuse with the government, this contract is a winner. It costs over $300 a month per computer and a monthly fee for each user account. The whole idea was to consolidate all IT and create a standard amongst every Marine and Naval location and while it was a sound idea, it was poorly implemented.
- logicet, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8I worked for EDS on NMCI - the EDS management was horrible. When we found problems we couldn't ever get the go ahead to fix them.
- zadadka, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7Oh Gawd....now it's the blind leading the blind........!
- MadKennyP, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5EDS lost its way at least 10 years ago when it was slow to transition to Internet technologies. I spent 10+ years working there and left during that time. As seems to be typical with EDS, the executives will make a bunch of money off this deal, and the technology workers will be left behind.
- uselessexpert, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8I wonder what Ross Perot would say...
- Zymophideth, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4They didn't "oust" the government IT folks, they took over the jobs that were normally taken care of by the government workers per their contract with the Navy. They gave the option to any displaced employee that they could come work for EDS with a 15% pay increase and guaranteed 3 years of employment. Yes, some people had 12 years in with the government and didn't want the transition to effect their retirement On the flip side some people were eligible for retirement, so they retired on Friday and came to work for EDS on Monday with a fatter paycheck. Some people hadn't even worked for the government for 2 years and got hired by EDS with a bigger paycheck. But I'm glad you didn't lose your job Neoisamu, that way you can continue to use your $300 a month computer paid for by tax dollars to surf the Internet while your at work collecting a nice paycheck once again taken care of by the taxpayers. EDS = bad Government Slug = Good. Oh, and lets not let anyone know that the Navy is actually paying less for IT now that NMCI is in place.
- Ducksa, on 05/13/2008, -0/+433% more than current value. Not exactly a great deal. However HP likely has visions about how they can implement EDS into their current processes, therefore it's worthwhile.
- tEhKewleSt, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5EDS = Electronic Data Systems. The company was founded by Ross Perot (former Presidential candidate), they specialize in business IT services.
- oderdigg, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5Correction, the specialize in SUCKING in IT business. Yes, I used to work for them. They suck. Too bad for HP.
- s1mph0ny, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Yeah, but HP has kept the Compaq name on hardware for a while. I think compaq notebooks are actually more common now that HP has made some nice looking ones.
- oderdigg, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Is this the same project where EDS lost billions?
- ryansmith18, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4I too am typing this from an NMCI computer. GET TO WORK OR I'LL DISABLE YOUR ACCOUNT.
- chewbie, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3tell your company to buy better service. Ask them on what the SLA is
- dixonHill, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5...HP will establish a new business group and brand it "EDS - an HP company"
Hmm....sounds a lot like the line the Systemhouse people were handed when EDS bought them..."EDS Systemhouse" One year later, they quietly dropped the "Systemhouse". - RealmDown, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3He's been been posting this ***** in multiple threads. Hopefully he'll just stop. We are hoping that he will have both his wrists broken soon by a rabid, sex-starved baboon, but that is just wishful thinking.
- MadKennyP, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3No doubt it would involve a pie chart.
- atarijedi, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4EDS builds aircraft WHILE they are flying! Holy Crap!
- bernandoo, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7Whoever wrote that article cannot do math. $25 per share = $12.6B not $13.9
- dmadip, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4HAHA... HP sucks. Trust me. They own our servers and OMFG.. it is bad. EDS is no better, but bigger will make them better right?
- tEhKewleSt, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3He would say "I sold out to GM for way less than that, *****!"
- madhouseradio, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3He would say, "I'm old, where's my chili"?
- Ducksa, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I love how we round from $13.9B to $14.0B. Must be nice :(
- KyleRayner, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2When are you guys going to pay back the 26 million you owe HMRC for that ***** of a computer system you gave em? As if the tax credit system wasnt bad enough before EDS came in...
- ryansmith18, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Nothing has changed. I work on the NMCI contract right now, and we aren't even allowed to visit Dell's website to download drivers when it's an obvious driver related issue. They now monitor our network traffic to make sure we are using the NMCI knowledge base rather than Googling the issue to see if there is a quick fix. I even received a big ol slap on the wrist last month for installing a printer using the drivers on the CD rather than pulling them down over the network from an NMCI server.
I have to get out of here...they're probably monitoring my comments on Digg :( - digitalunit, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Eternal Death Slayer
- Velvolver, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5I actually work for EDS, and this is awesome. We'll be able to makeup for crushing Europe's child care services.
- stfudumbass, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2EDS manages our major data center and networks. As a server/desktop tech on the other side of them, I dread ever having to deal with EDS and their endless forms. I was pissed when HP bought Compaq since I now had to speak Indian to get tech support. I don't see this making anything better at all.
- mrhahn, on 05/13/2008, -1/+3Yeh, here's hoping they keep up the same level of quality as before the takeover: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Data_Syste ...
- akatherder, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2They herd cats too.
- Zippo, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Yay outsourcing! Wait...
- yojiffyskippy, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Clearly a win for EDS and a loss for HP (and it's shareholders). WTF? Did they hire Carly to come back and put the final nail in the HP coffin?
- yogiincork, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I used to work for hp (services) when they took over the support for workstations of GM ... ironically from EDS. The project was a HUGE mess ... I left after 3 months. I can tell you it was very bad. Once a engineer from GM told me on the phone: "My god, you guys are in a worse shape than us..." :D
- yogiincork, on 05/13/2008, -1/+3yes....they'll add it THEIR suck :)
- thund3rstruck, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Right, that's because the over paid, under skilled pieces of ***** that used to run the USN/USMC networks got let go as they should have. EDS did what had to be done in order to purge the bottom dwelling sub contractors and site technicians. Don't come out in public and start crying fowl on EDS because just because you don't posses a desired skillset. Some of the brightest, most intellectual professionals I have ever worked with come into the NMCI and cleaned house. NMCI today is quite an accomplishment compared to what it was back during the transitional period (2001-2004)
- ebmnoize, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Interesting...
List of acquisitions by Hewlett-Packard
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_acquisitions_ ... - keraneuology, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Once upon a time I was a contract employee there. I was told they wanted to hire me in directly, but then the project lead screwed things up so badly that the entire project was shipped overseas and they brought him in as a full-time regular employee and let me go. Let's hope EDS is better for HP than Compaq was.... where's Carly when you need an idiot to take the blame for a stupid decision?
- djAnakin, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Just when we thought NMCI couldn't get any *****!
- xz9925, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1its projected worth.. if you sell your car.. you try to sell it for more then its worth.. so you make some money.. or if someone is REALLY interested in buying it.. they'll offer more then its worth to make the sale happen
- BaldyNapper, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Can anybody tell me what happened to the Compaq staff when HP bought them? Reason I ask? I work for EDS and want to know what they are likely to do...TIA
- pyrator, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1When I worked for EDS we had emails from Brown, Dick. The one with the expensive wife
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_arc ... -
"Nor would he, given a second chance, say one thing he said at EDS's annual meeting last April. The stock had fallen by more than 20% since the year began and some shareholders strongly objected to Brown's $52 million pay package. The proxy explained that the directors were rewarding his "outstanding performance and contribution" during 2001. A second sentence rephrased things to "extraordinary contribution and performance." None of that silenced the critics, one of whom wanted to know why anyone could possibly need that much money. Said Brown, trying to make a joke: "I have a very expensive wife." Now, there is a coachable moment! " - Temby, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Another EDS employee here, and to those badmouthing us...I completely agree.
Rarely a day goes by that I don't despair over our lethargic processes, incompetent management or just plain terrible decision making. I feel for those who are frustrated by dealing with us. It's bad enough dealing with ourselves from the inside.
Here's hoping this will shake things up a bit... -
