- RPGmaster, on 09/26/2009, -1/+7Why is everyone dogging out HP? I love my Pavilion dv2000 :D
Though I am only 15... and it is my first laptop...
But it has touch control media keys! (and works wonderfully with Ubuntu) - WafflesID, on 09/26/2009, -0/+3Well, it certainly had nothing to do with their technical support.
At first I thought they were great. Handled a defective laptop with a KNOWN defect (presario F500 http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam ... required a motherboard replacement) quite well. Laptop failed again within 2 weeks of getting it back. This time they say it will cost $500 because the LCD monitor was bad, the LCD monitor cable was bad, the CPU was bad and the RAM was bad and it wasn't under warranty (it wasn't. Laptop is 3 years old). *cough*******cough*
Second was a PC where the hard drive failed. So the owner had to order a recovery CD (dell just SHIPS a recovery CD with the goddamn computer, what a novelty). But the DVD drive won't boot to the recovery disc. This is a known problem
(http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en& ...
NOTE: Drives that are known to require a firmware update before they can read support-sent recovery discs are: TSST TS-H652L - update SP26482, and PBDS DH-16A1L/PBDS DH-16AYH - update SP35000. You can find the name of your CD/DVD drive in the BIOS Setup Utility screens or from Device Manager.)
Tech support agent I spoke with from HP basically told me that I (rather the owner of the PC) was going to have to buy a new copy of Vista because the recovery disc doesn't work with new hard drives (they require the recovery partition). which is *****. Had to find a spare DVD drive to boot up to the recovery disc, and yes the disc DOES work with a new hard drive. Someone else would have ended up purchasing Vista according to that dumb *****.
HP and Dell support BOTH suck. But I'm picking the lesser of two evils whenever possible. - fritzmusic, on 09/26/2009, -0/+3Who here has an HP product that they called tech support for and received anyone who isn't working in American borders? Must have this company mixed with Dell's overpriced ***** or something. I've always gotten a good deal on HP equipment. I've never had a major deal-breaker problem with their products and their live support chat is awesome. They're a great company as far as products and support. Why all the hating here? I've done contract work for them before and they don't operate like some represent them here.
- Wrangler76, on 09/26/2009, -1/+4I guess this proves that if you tack on lots of gloss and lower build quality as much as possible, people will still buy your products and you'll make a lot of money.
- daliminator, on 09/26/2009, -1/+4HP really isn't that bad... after ASUS, Lenovo, and Fujitsu, I think HP's got the best mix of style and power--with pretty attractive price tags. I don't know why people are giving them so much *****.
- zenerdiode, on 09/26/2009, -1/+4Don't know why people are giving HP so much *****. They're affordable and some models actually have decent designs. Whatsmore, they still keep a large chunk of their manufacturing in the US. Sure...like all PC manufacturers and Apple, they subcontract out to Foxconn and Honghai in China...but unlike many others, their are still designing and building in California. HP has been fantastic ever since they got rid of Fiorina.
- keyo, on 09/26/2009, -0/+2My dv2000 which I bought in early 2007 died earlier this year.
I presume you've seen the 3 beeps nvidia problem?
The funny thing is it did boot properly once I let it heat up (put it under a pillow or something). - keyo, on 09/26/2009, -0/+2I used to have one, before it over heated. If you have nvidia video I'd be careful. After 2 years mine would start up with 3 beeps and a blank screen. It would work if I wrapped it in a towel to get it hot though. I would expect a mid range laptop like that to last at least 3 years.
I agree that they do work well with ubuntu, they media keys are handled by the bios and not some crappy windows drivers.
I have a macbook pro 13" now, and it's much better build quality than the HP. Battery life is better, screen is brighter, keyboard lights up, it's 400 grams lighter. I love it. - Eintel, on 09/26/2009, -0/+2Don't forget dv2000/dv6000/dv9000/v3000/v6000
I see about 3 of these dead or broken each week.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en& ... - Kakumeikeahi, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1Isn't topping the competition always a goal of a company?
How about I care when they do it rather then make claims about the future.. - madwh, on 09/26/2009, -1/+2Does this mean by 2015 we'll have people that speak English when calling customer service?
- jdryyz, on 09/26/2009, -6/+7Good luck with that. Your laptops are atrocious.
- WafflesID, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1Keep trying.
EVERY company ends up treating some of their customers like ***** every once in awhile. Unfortunately, HP does it more frequently (on par with Dell admittedly). - Eintel, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1Don't forget dv2000/dv6000/dv9000/v3000/v6000

/dv2000 owner - WafflesID, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1Thats funny. Apple, Dell, Gateway, Acer, toshiba, asus, etc. Yeah... sure looks like there is no competition to me.
- cubicledrone, on 09/26/2009, -1/+1A strategy that only works in a market where there's no competition.
Like America. - PhillyOC, on 09/26/2009, -2/+2At least they are not eMachines.
- yaosio, on 09/26/2009, -7/+5Who the hell keeps buying their ***** products?
- cubicledrone, on 09/26/2009, -3/+1HP will increase profit the way all American "employers" do: fire all the Americans and then promise "good jobs" will appear someday.
Or just get on television and tell Americans they don't have a right to a job, even though HP apparently has a right to a non-slumping PC market.
