- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty good, this advice has been posted before... but you
are nice enough to post some basic dummy files to build from.
One suggestion though, it is just as easy to temporarily rename
the ISO file you are using to "image.iso" so you don't have to
edit the vmx. - Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hi,
Thank you! The way I first did it was very long-winded (it involved the Browser Application and all that), so I just wanted to write a simpler and more concise method for everyone else. ;)
Your suggestion is a good one, but I always prefer to leave my .iso with its original filename because if not I don't know what it is among all the others I have - I guess it is just a personal habit, but I decided that altering the .vmx would be the better way to go. Thank you for you advice though! - Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1burnninator: Hi! I was also talking about VMware Player's EULA, and that's the only relevant bit. As for your problem - sorry for not specifying. Yes, just let it use the whole drive (it won't actually take up 107GB on your hard drive, it's just that I wanted to make the drive big enough for everybody's needs).
bonoboUnknown: Hi! I assume you can, as long as you manage to set up VMware Player properly in WINE (although there isn't really a need to do this, because VMware offers a Linux version of the Player for download - see here: http://www.vmware.com/download/player/).
ace2005: That's a very good question, and to tell you the truth, I'm not really sure how. Maybe you could try setting your C: drive as the CD-ROM drive in the .vmx file, and then drag the files onto there when you're within the virtual machine? I'll check for you... - Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the way you keep putting in comments, Wolphin. More people should do that. Makes it more personal.
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just installed VMPlayer and booted slax without a problem. Very cool!
- Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DukunSatki: Pity they aren't available for free download... :(
malachai: Are you sure eth0 is still enabled in Ubuntu? Try "sudo ifup eth0" from the console and check if it works after that. ;) - Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rm999: In fact, it is perfectly in tune with the EULA to do this. I quote: "You are responsible for obtaining any licenses necessary to operate any such third-party software.", and a licence is not needed for running Mandriva 2006 Free. :)
Thanks everyone, and I'm glad you liked it! - Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Night: I haven't tried it, but it should work. Give it a go a let me know how it turns out - although I might end up trying it myself as well ;)
"VMWare is soo slow, just get a second computer to do it"
dark_helmet, when you assign VMware 512MB of your RAM, believe me it does not run at all slowly. - DukunSakti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out http://www.4pi1.com/ for ready to run VMware disks for the player.
http://www.odotx.com/ - bonoboUnknown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But can I run Linux through VMWare which is running on Linux through WINE??
- link_36p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is there anyway to make it REALLY run full screen, like when you make it go full screen the acuall display isnt very big, this kinda bothers me cuz i was thinking of switching to linux, and using xp with vmware to play games and stuff, but if that is as big as the display will go screw that :p
anyways +digg - veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does it emulate the sse 2? cause i wouldn't mind running osx, to do some cross platform testing ^_^
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"But can I run Linux through VMWare which is running on Linux through WINE??"
Erm, VMWare is avalible for Linux.. I doubt it'll like being run via WINE
"How do i transfer files between vmware and KDE (Ubuntu)?"
Network shares, or an FTP server on either the VMWarey OS, or your main PC. Or make an ISO of the files, and use something like Deamon Tools/Alchol 120% and set that as your CD drive
- Ben - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why? PC is good enough for most things. Time is money.
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VMWare is soo slow, just get a second computer to do it, but i guess if you just want to try out linux without buying (or pirating) the full VMWare this it good for you.
- FatController, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. If this had been a step-through of installing additional OS's natively, maybe.
- Night, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm time to test run a Gentoo Install? Just a practice before I do anything big to my system. Anyone know if VMWare works with a Gentoo Install just asking becasue Gentoo is a bit deeper on the install then most OSes.
- Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ben, thanks for your post - I had thought of a network server or putting the files into a .iso, but you would need the hardware for the former and the latter would be a bit tedious.
What I hadn't thought of though was an FTP server on localhost - I'll give it a try. ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vmware is great... it runs without hassle most of the time, I'm running 5 oses on my box at work..
- Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By the way, when I first did this, my internet connection worked on Ubuntu. Now it doesn't. Any idea why? And yes, it's wireless.
- burnninator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's the problem i'm having, Im installing ubuntu on vmware and i get to the partitioning part, do i choose the first option and let it let it use all 107 gigs that i don't have? I don't understand, my hd is not that big.
- Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0link_36p: Thanks for the digg! So wait, are you trying to run Windows XP on VMware Player? You should be able to change the settings (within XP in Player) to your resolution, and from there make the application run full screen. See if that works. ;)
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Running Windows XP from the Mandriva box would make more sense. Errr, maybe no Windows at all would make more sense.
Anyway, nice stuff. - Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0reversial: I know, it's quite funny looking back at it - but I wanted to make the title comprehensible to everyone, so I just put that. ;)
- reversial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, read the article title and though "Wow, next it'll be 'How to turn your computer on!'"
Anyway, VMWare kicks a$$. - Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Grr. Nothing.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone seen any guides to installing Dos or windows 3.11 on vmware?
- Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, the above link was meant to be: http://fdos.org/ripcord/beta9sr2/fdbootcd.iso
- Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0malachai: Thank you! ;)
drbroccoli: No Windows at all - definitely the best option! ;) And thanks!
vaschacho: Have you tried running it as root? "sudo bash" and then "./script" works for me. ;)
aywwts4: I installed FreeDOS a couple of hourse ago, actually. It's a fairly simple process - run the image (latest FreeDOS version can be found here: http://fdos.org/ripcord/beta9sr2/fdbootcd.iso) as per usual, and the installation should be fairly simple from there! (Hint: Make sure you choose the "FreeDOS 32" option and then "Boot with El Torito drivers" - or something like that) :) - Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0veritech: I'm not sure if it does! I'll pop my friend an email to see if OS X for x86 works on VMware Player (I'm pretty sure he has the ISOs).
dBass: Heh! You win - your method's simpler. Although there really isn't any need to do the "format c:" at the beginning. :P
cheztir: Yup, that's what I first thought it was! ;) - vashchacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone been able to install this on a Linux box? I keep trying with Ubuntu, but the script can not write to the /etc/init.d folder, and just aborts afterward.
- Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0malachai: That sucks...make sure that networking is enabled within Ubuntu, and that in Windows the network connections for VMware Player are also enabled.
link_36p: I'm glad it's finally working properly for you! :) - link_36p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works great wolphin', this really helped me cuz ive been wanting to switch to linux for a while now, but ive to attached to many windows apps, i almost switched cuz of wine but it wast good enough. But im now running ububtu as my base OS and got a quick shortucut to Xp if i want to play any games.
- cheztir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow VMware Player was a bad name choice imo. sounds like a media center app
- Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh - at least it's finally fixed. :)
- Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got it.
Had to edit my /etc/hosts file......
Sorry, my stupidity. - vashchacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks Wolphin. I didn't know that the bash shell had was needed (I did root access, but not through bash).
- Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0vaschacho: It worked - great! The bash shell isn't needed, but it's just my little shortcut for becoming root (I can never remember the sudo parameters to stay as root ;) ).
- ioannusdeverani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thes is pretig colig. Ic hope thaet hit weorceth in min crapig computor. Ic habbe 256 mg RAM ond Intel Celeron.
By thy waeg: Ic sprece in Seaxisc; colig, hoh? - stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"VMWare is soo slow, just get a second computer to do it, but i guess if you just want to try out linux without buying (or pirating) the full VMWare this it good for you."
If you want to try out Linux just get a live cd - Ace2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How do i transfer files between vmware and KDE (Ubuntu)?

If you just want to try out linux use a live cd - burnninator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wolphin: I'm pretty sure rm999 is talking about the EULA of the vmware player, doing this pretty much circumvents the reason for buying the full version of vmware.
- Ace2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Oh cool, now i can install windows 95 on my system, that was the first OS i ever used so i just want to see how far OSs have come in that time.
I may have started out on windows but i now use Linux :) - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+01. go to torrentreactor.com and download the full version
2. install whatever you want
it's basically the same thing. I bet you the EULA makes it just as illegal to do this than the steps above - Wolphin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Glad it worked! ;)
- EricTheGrey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Cool. I'm going to have to try this out. I like playing around with other OS's.

- dBass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"HOW TO: Run Other OSes On Your PC"
Ah, there is a much easier way to run a better OS on your windows peecee:
1. format c: {my DOS syntax may be off; I haven't used this ***** in years}
2. Install better OS of your choice; there are many: Linux, BSD, OS X, etc.
3. Wonder why it took you so fsking long. - socket, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Mandriva sucks and VMware sucks even more. No Digg.
