- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -37/+301"The discs all go to 51. Look, right across the board, 51, 51, 51, and..."
"Oh, I see. And Blu-Ray goes up to 50?"
"Exactly."
"Does that mean it's larger? Is it any larger?"
"Well, it's one larger, isn't it? It's not 50. You see, most blokes, you know, will be filling discs with 50 gigs. You're on 50 here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on 50 with your movie. Where can you go from there? Where?"
"I don't know."
"Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?"
"Put it up to 51."
"51. Exactly. One larger." - datagod, on 10/17/2007, -23/+147Wow! One whole Gig!
Finally we have enough room to fit Esperanto and Latin soundtracks!
Et tu, Neo? - inactive, on 10/17/2007, -15/+128@mrASSMAN
Don't you mean LACK of various anal-rapings. Since the news of porn not being allowed to be on Blu-ray - mrASSMAN, on 10/17/2007, -49/+157I don't like blu-ray because Sony supports it.
Which means heavy DRM and various anal-rapings. Also, it is said to be more expensive.
The reason Hd-dvd can do triple-layer is probably due to it using thicker plastic which means more space for the separate layers. - twtmc, on 10/17/2007, -22/+109Apparently they forgot about the TDK 100GB BluRay disc.

HD-DVD has surpased nothing except DVD. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -27/+65"Which means heavy DRM and various anal-rapings. Also, it is said to be more expensive."
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have essentially the same DRM.
And if we're going by demonstrated maximum capacaity. Blu-Ray leads 100GB to 51GB.If we go by theoretical max (though I think there are a few Blu-Ray lab prototypes) then Blu-Ray leads 200GB to 60GB.
Seeing as because of the DRM I don't intend to buy movies on /either format, Blu-Ray is my preferred choice simply because of storage capacity. - inkubux, on 10/17/2007, -6/+40Aren't tdk just had a 100GB and a 200GB Blu-Ray disc at CES this year?
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -2/+35INNACURATE!!
http://gear.ign.com/articles/753/753812p1.html
"January 9, 2007 - TDK is bringing the Blu-ray Disc love to CES 2007. The company announced its ginorma-tron-gantic new Blu-ray Disc, which weighs in at a very hefty 200 gigabytes. Currently, top-of-the-line Blu-ray Discs are able to store some 50 gigabytes and even that is considered enormous when compared to HD-DVDs, which can generally hold about half that amount. TDK call its new super Blu-ray Disc the "most advanced optical media ever developed." And when we consider just how many secretly snapped photos of our naked co-workers we could store on these discs, we can't help but agree."
200GB > 51GB. Nuff' said. - Cannfodd3r, on 10/12/2007, -13/+45@ilyag
Nice Spinal Tap paraphrasing.
+1 digg - albi123, on 10/12/2007, -13/+42I don't think they are showing off, one layer can hold 17gigs and 17x3=51. The important part is that HDDVD now is cheaper than blu-ray and you get more(1gig).
- pooper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Yeah, but how much do the new triple layer dvds cost?
- sandrobird, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Whats the big deal? Blu-Ray has already seen 200GB on a single disk. Am I the only one confused by this?
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21toshiba also said they can and will do this with blue ray, so hd dvd doesn't go beyond anything.
when hd dvd get's it's 3rd or 4th(15gig layer), blue ray will get it's 3rd or 4th(25 gig layer) - mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -15/+32@ ilyag
I can't believe anybody would digg down a Spinal Tap reference. Blasphemy!
I thought it was funny and on topic. I mean it is 1 larger. - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Look like an 'ass in the end?' Sounds redundant to me. ;-)
- se1zure, on 10/17/2007, -0/+16Reported as innacurate.
There have already been stories of blu ray disks achiving upwards of 250gb on dual layer. - phlegm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Why do people still believe there is no porn on Bluray. Just because one blogger says so with no link and then the diggboys bump it to the front page does not make it true. Vivid which is the largest porn seller is bluray exclusive. Just like most of the movie studios.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Story marked as inaccurate. There are 100 and 200 GB Blu-ray discs.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16What's up with you guys? Why do you all promote stories of certain companies while dump stories of the opposing part (the ones you call opposing part). What's in there for you, are you working for them for money, no, but you ARE working for them, you bring (and will bring) money for them. Let's not hide the fact, Digg has plenty of power to technophiles, especially in US. The fact that certain stories are being promoted which always praise the same part sounds fishy. I don't think a person can be easily manipulated but the mass -oh the mass- is dumber than any single person, it CAN be manipulated via the domino effect. I'm sure that Digg like any other great medium is a subject of marketing, viral or otherwise. Why don't you people rise for once and bash these inaccurate stories that feed the pleasure of the many.
Blu Ray had 8-layer 200GB discs ready and 4-layer 100GB discs production-viable, long before that. HD-DVD is being praised all the time just because Sony is to be hated, but why? Why Microsoft which backs HDDVD is not to be hated, or Nintendo which manufactures Wii and sells it 70% more than its manufacturing costs is not to be hated. Why are there companies to be taken to? They are working for their best interests, you HAVE to work for your best interests not theirs. If Sony has a good product we don't have to ridicule it just because it is Sony's, this is fanboyism and it is retarded.
Things are simple, the crowd is not wise, the crowd members are just dominoes, they are not persons. There is a reason democracy does not work, there is a reason that social networking is a fad, people lose their intelligence when in large groups, they become pawns of an invisible man who is not there.
There was a time Digg had intelligent stories in the frontpage, to be honest they are still there but they're a lot more sparse, now there is more bashing of the opposing end and "informative" articles for people's end. Digg has become a battlefield, the more psycho you are the better. Kevin Rose you just made a fortune from the Rtards strolling you website, congratulations - BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15the Yoda thing - especially - Jedi Master Yoda is just redundant. Any moderate geek/dork/nerd would get the reference. References are most funny when you don't quote them. Its like having to explain a joke.
- Zipko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16"...these go to eleven."
- skrew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15So now HDDVD has better resolution.... 1080p?
faster data rates... 40mbps AVC?
AND higher capacity... 100 and 200 GB bluray disc?
digg has turned to complete trash - Mousse, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Just like dual layer DVDs are dirt cheap? And it's been, what? Ten years?
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Seeing as how the current price for double-layer DVDs are 2 to $3 a piece (which is many times more than SL), a triple-layer hd-dvd may remain expensive for a decade after it is released..
- nimawin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12200GB Blu-ray Disc:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2011173,00.asp - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16I don't think they are actually releasing it as a product though. They were just saying it's possible. Probably very unreliable at the same time.
- lord138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"... It will be exciting to see if this has any effect on the raging format war. Stay tuned."
This is giving me a raging clue - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This topic is not exactly accurate. These three layer disks won't be coming to market until ~2008.
When blu-ray uses three layers, it will be storing ~75GB.
Maximum size planned for production with be a four layer blu-ray capable of storing ~100gb. If they use both sides a single blu-ray disc can hold 200GB.
HD DVD has quite a ways to go. - skrew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10too bad it won't work on 1st and 2nd gen hd-dvd players
- ministewy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10tisk tisk...
all you guys fighting over a few gigabytes of space, thats spare change when you consider this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc
HVD's = 3.9 TB demonstrated maximum
I don't know about you but I'd rather wait a few years to put EVERYTHING on one of these then jump the gun and choose a format (not saying which one) that may be obsolete within the next 5-10 years - Thistledown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I know there are a lot of Sony haters out there, but the fact of the matter is that the Blu-Ray format has the most content providers. This isn't like the days of Beta vs VHS. Sony has expanded into owning movie studios since then. Ultimately, I think consumers will go where the content is. Titles like Casino Royale, Pirates of the Carribean 1 & 2, and Cars are coming out this year on Blu-Ray. I didn't seen any big title announcements on HD-DVD at CES.
http://www.thedigitalbits.com has a good article summing up CES
For the record, I have players for both formats. Aside from Serenity and Apollo 13 (Universal titles), the other HD-DVD discs I have are available on Blu-Ray. - theGOG, on 10/17/2007, -3/+11I think there was a 100GB Blu-Ray Disc already...
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,120896-page,1/article.html?RSS=RSS - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Jaymoon, that is the cheapest I have ever seen it.
But look at the ratings -- cheap no-name DL media means half of them will end up being coasters. 50% of the reviews gave it a rating of 1 or 2.
For anyone who is interested in buying DL DVD.. buy Verbatim. They are the most reliable brand by far, even if it's a little more expensive. - endekks, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16I guess you didn't care to check twtmc's link above...
People really are grasping at straws to point to the "doom" of Sony. Give it up... You're just going to make yourself tired - and possibly look like an ass in the end. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Yes. That's why this story is more Microsoft-funded FUD, especially since people aren't mentioning that this is an expensive triple-layer disc, while a 50GB Blu-ray is a more affordable dual-layer.
Sony, Disney, and other companies are going to be Blu-ray only. It's already guaranteed to win just because of the Disney endorsement alone. And the PS3 uses it (I'm a Nintendo fan, and even I know the PS3 will have a more successful year in 2007...even the old PS2 outsold the Xbox 360).
Hate Sony all you want, but Blu-ray is awesome. - DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9hey buddy why don't you keep your facts and personal experience out of this digg mob mentality, your making people think.
- Rentun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Who's Yoda?
- phlegm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sorry but HD-DVD has DRM
- soleblazer, on 10/17/2007, -9/+16yeah...who gives a damn about 1gig?
- Annon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is vaporware. Toshiba did not demonstrate or show any of the technology required. They just said there was one.
Blu-Ray this week demonstrated a 200GB disc that works with all current players. - brooklynboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Now for a non-anti PS3 constructive response:
TDK has already announced 200gb disks - http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/753/753812p1.html
Why wasn't this covered or referenced in this article?
Currently, Blu-Ray discs can hold up to 75gb TRIPLE LAYER, and they have QUAD LAYER in the pipeline that holds up to 100gb. So the war has not been one, just the "I'm first!!" battle. And what's ONE extra gig when you can have 25 extra gigs with Triple Layer?
I wish these bloggers would do a little more research before they post and I'm hoping that Diggers and Anti-PS3'rs would at least use a search engine before they post thier misinformed responses.
SOURCES: - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@TheSolomon:
Apparently you've never been in a non-electronics store that sells CD-R's.... - fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Porn not on Blu-Ray, porn on internet!
- phlegm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hrmmm last I remember Apple was supporting bluray. The only people who don't are Toshiba, Microsoft and the digg kiddies. (And one porn company)
- phlegm, on 10/12/2007, -13/+19Hrmmm I though the diggboys were all saying that bluray sucks and ps3 sucks because we will never need 50 gig. Oh well.
BTW: Bluray now goes up to 100 gig so you are still way behind.
http://www.dvhardware.net/article16280.html - pegisys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you can't compare the price of a dual layer disc for burning and a dual layer pressed disc, a pressed dual layer DVD doesn't cost more then a few cents
and as for using HD-DVD or blu-ray to transfer data I think they are both going to fail, by the time they become priced for main stream portable HDD and flash device are going to be out classing them, They will have there place but I have already noticed that since I started using usb flash drives and memory cards I don't even burn many DVDs or CDs just for data transfer.
with how cheap flash drives/cards are becoming it may not be a big deal to put whatever data you want to give someone on it and not want it back - nonsequitor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Toshiba also announced that have a success design for 10 layer disks in both formats. Sure a 3 layer HD-DVD disk is larger than a 2 layer BluRay disk, but a 10 layer BluRay disk is considerably larger than a 10 layer HD-DVD disk.
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nevermind the fact that there have been working 200gb Blu-Ray discs around for over a year.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So when are they going to catch up to the 200GB Blu-ray disc that's already been announced?
- DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7doesn't matter anymore, this isn't 1997 with dial up connections.
