- MeltingIce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I feel sorry for Kevin and the rest of the digg crew. Digg.com had better not get shutdown because of this because I will miss it too damn much
- fuxjoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7guys... give this guy a break.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5can you please go back to deleting those stupid ***** number stories now.
that is all. - crillbilly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Damn straight. I'm all for pirating and such, but this is a bit rediculous... ok ok, its ***** insane, just as bad as all the political correctedness out there. All of you trying to prove a point have in turn ***** up digg.com. Don't be "amazed" by this movement, be afraid of the power of stupid people in large groups...
- sitric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5ok, now listen carfully...
even if you are going to post that silly key... think about it.. do even know how to use it? (mann, even i dont!!!!!) do you even own a fast enough internet connection to ever dream of dowloading an HD-DVD image in 2 days.... maybe you do. but do you own a HD-DVD burner... whats the use then?
you cant do anything with the key or by spreading it. and if you think it is C00L and 1337 to do it, newsflash, ITS NOT!
Because of about 1000 of you a-hole loosers who arnt even 15 yrs of age and dont unserstand the consequences and the money involved, such a nice internet phenomenon like DiGG is in danger of being taken down. Just because, you want to babbel about "freedom of speech"...
THINK ABOUT IT! YOU DONT EVEN KNOW HOW TO USE IT! AND DONT YOU PUT OTHERS WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS BE HELD IN COURT BECAUSE OF THIS SILLY ACTION! - mr1337, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7We can put our swords down, fellas. Let's stop the nonsense now. It was fun while it lasted, but Digg.com must continue its daily user-driven news course.
- AbortedFetus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8The Digg user reaction to this was perfect. We HAVE to stand up against corporate bullying like this. You cannot claim that a number is your intellectual property. It's like Douglas Adams sending cease and desist orders to every website with the number 42 on it!
Information CAN be intellectual property, but this encryption key was more or less a random number chosen to be used as such. It is our duty as upholders of freedom of speech and information to spread this around as much as possible to try to get thru to these bullies that they cannot do this. - fuxjoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4give this guy a break guys
- sitric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well, maybe taking the site down for 2 or 3 days may save it from permanent ban!
its better they stay banned. till a month or so. and then their accounts can be reactivated.... that will serve them right! - johngault, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hard spot Kevin.
If you got a letter, You should post it, & then you should follow it, but prior to banning users, you should have posted the letter, &/or put a warning on the submit page first. This is the only part of what happened in the last few days that ticked me off.
While I understand its 'just a number' to most of the users, It is a DCMA violation. Not free speech. With the current laws, it is no different than posting a serial number on a warez site.
However DCMA is a hot issue here at Digg, and Kevin has chosen to fight for the users. Some one needs to fight for change, and Kevin has decided to stand up.
Kevin, you have big balls to stand up for the community and allow yourself to get in harm way. I think you are taking on a large challenge should you be 'lucky' enough to be targeted for a lawsuit. Unfortunately, the press indicates you have a big pocket, so it is likely you will be targeted.
Hopefully, the Digg community will put their money where their mouth is when the 5h!7 hits the fan.
Good Luck, and thanks - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And if all sites had to do just that it probably wouldn't be a bad thing!
At least to some degree.
As far as this specific case, it seems a shame that digg.com didn't just let the stuff go to start with. There would have been 2 or 3 front page stories and then it'd have been forgotten about. Isn't hindsight a fine thing!
I think though, what got people so riled up is that the apparent censorship and removal of diggs etc is totally at odds with what digg and its founders once prided themselves upon.
We have Mr Rose (and yes, I know digg is a LOT more than just Kevin) with fantastic projects like The Broken under his belt but who now seemed to be actively suppressing things (that the big corporations don't want getting out) for fear of reprisals that most likely would never eventuate as the HDDVD key has well and truly escaped now. People probably felt a bit betrayed after the support they have shown to digg.
On second thoughts, the censorship might have actually been a fantastic way to 'stick it to the big guys'. I can think of no better way to get the hex code out there than to deliberately cause this sort of ***** storm! Just a thought.... - kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this site now has an odd feel to it after this happened, it must be what it was like if sites had to fight for their independence
- Gendolookin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2heres the deal people....you are violating the law. It is in the TOS you cannot BREAK THE LAW!! Kevin doesn't owe you any warning, he doesn't owe you anything. If you posted the code, you KNOW you are breaking the law, and if you didn't know. Welp, ignorance of the law isn't an excuss. Its your job to understand them. All kevin has the obligation to do is stand by the rules YOU agreed with when you created an account, and the consequences call for a ban...So Kevin, if you're listening, ban them all...EVERY SINGLE ONE!! delete the posts, delete the users. DELETE IT ALL!! They are called rules for a reason, and you all agreed to the damn rules when you signed up for digg, So why don't you be a man and stand up to YOUR end of the responsibility. I don't understand this freaking logic, its absolutely ridiculous!
- iffypop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You cant pick and choose how a site like Digg works.
This was always going to happen, and i'm glad it did. As Chromoly says, we'll all feel the benefit in the long run. - Chromoly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4No break needed. It was a judgment call and this time it looks like the wrong choice was made. The crowd will cool off and we will all be better off in the long run.
- tmanstark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not much of a slogan there.
- boober86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just hope digg does not get sued over this.
- balthcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Next step, the Digg Legal Defense Fund!
