- HiddenPeanuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To be honest I find this a little encouraging. At least someone at HBO understands what bittorrent is and a bit about how it works. That's a good first step to a legit system. And yeah they do hold the copyright, I find no problem when them acting this way.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2HBO needs to watch Serenity
You can't stop the signal - kristopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those who keep saying it's stealing when someone downloads these shows. Say it with me. Copyright.. Good. Infringement.. You are doing great. Now say it together, Copyright Infringement!
Yay! There you go! Great job. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well most of the movies shown on HBO suck I'd only want it for some of their shows.
btw my downloads of Rome complete just fine thank you very much as were my downloads of the Sopranos when that was popular. - dc7407, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1fight back
dugg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh and one last thing, I only started watching Rome because I heard they were blocking it and poisoning torrents (I saw a challenge). Now, I'm not sure if that is viral advertising or nailing your own coffin.
It is kind of like DRM encouraging piracy. - Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1id pay to watch hbo online for sure, but they would rather throw money at lame attempts to botch a file.
those mediasentry ***** are annoying, but easy to stop. Ive never watched Rome, but now I will just to piss off hbo. - kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Excellent point. The BMW dealership near me just expanded so tonight I'm going to steal a car from it.
They are doing well and won't mind the missing car."
This one always cracks me up. Steal a BMW and the BMW is GONE, YOU have it and only you. Steal a TV show and they still have the masters for the show, huh? Yeah... think more, even if it hurts. I tried and it's working out. I get migraines once in a while but people like me now. - Peach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do wish HBO and others would stop dragging their heels and get their shows out there, available to pc users. I honestly would pay for certain shows to be able to download them and watch them at my own convenience. My fiance and I buy the shows when they come out on DVD anyway, but if you miss every damned show how do you know if you want to spend all that money on a DVD set? Short sweet point: take a hint from the downloaders and make a way for it to be legit.
- hold_steady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as long as they stay away from curb your enthusiasm im cool.
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The BMW dealership near me just expanded so tonight I'm going to steal a car from it."
Downloading a copyrighted TV show is not like stealing a car. It's like cloning a car. Deal with it. Understand it. Forumate a new argument. - newtonke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HBO is owned by Time Warner, they own COX communications. Guess what, if you get caught they will cut your Internet access.
- ideasyncrasy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Downloading a copyrighted TV show is not like stealing a car. It's like cloning a car. Deal with it. Understand it. Forumate a new argument."
Oh right. BMW pays lots of researchers and engineers to design the cars; then I can use this cool application that I found on the net to clone those cars and pass them around to friends and strangers so that no one actually has to pay BMW for all their effort.
You may not be stealing the product, but you're certainly stealing the customers. - TheRepublic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FOCK HBO !
- ideasyncrasy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with downloading HBO programming if you subscribe to their stations. It's essentially the same thing as getting a taped version of the show from a friend, but instead of tape you're getting a file and instead of a friend it's someone you don't know."
This is a pretty common argument, but totally overlooks the fact that by using bittorrent you're actually distributing it to others, who very well may not have paid for the programming. - frontbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Copying TV episodes somehow creates a balance, do you know how many commercial promotions you see on an episode of 24?, well we have Ford, Motorola, Cisco Systems and DELL (now HP took over)."
I liked the episode last season where they had a scene about how their Cisco Routers were preventing an attack or they turned on something to defend the network or something, but it seemed a whole lot like "Truman Show" style advertisement in the middle of the show. - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They've done this before with other shows like Entourage. If only they'd invest that money into a streaming service--I'm certainly willing to subscribe.
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All of the movie channels should make their shows availible for download to paying customers in the first place.
- kidblast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My ISP just terminated my internet because HBO contacted them about me. Guess what show I got busted with...Rome. I was a paying subscriber of HBO until a few weeks back but I was hooked on their shows.
After digging for information in a phone call with my USP, they informed me that this has been happening often with HBO. They told me I could write an apology letter to the infringement people at HBO at which point HBO usually contacts the ISP and says whether or not I can have my services back. So basically, my ISP would take that strike off my record and let me have the internet back. They said it works 95% of the time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Downloading a copyrighted TV show is not like stealing a car"
Your right. It's like stealing period.
+ digg - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to agree with Djork, they have a right to protect their property, and the face that HBO seems to understand bittorrent is a GOOD thing. Personally, I think if channels offered torrents of their shows for a monthly fee, I would bite. Lately I've been downloading TV much more then watching it. This is partly due to lack of time to watch shows when they're live, but also because the TV down here at college is crappy. I think a system such as $10 a month for access to TV show torrents wouldn't be too much to ask, and would be a great alternative to traditional TV.
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Like stated in the article, any success they have in this attempt will be shortlived.
- theloganrunner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A good example why HBO employees should have internet access on their workstations.
Simmer Down. - 1337geek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that brings up a really good point, if you already pay for hbo, how can it be illegal?
- kidblast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I forgot to mention that the apology letter was HBO's suggestion to the ISP. I guess they just want a record of you admitting it was wrong and saying you won't ever do it again.
- morsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder if what HBO is doing is illegal.. it feels very wrong to me
- anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's just one of the issues with doing something that is 'illegal' however, people downloading TV isn't hurting people. it isn't causing pain to others. and what? HBO don't make enough as it is?!
- kylef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its too late to do anything, they should have thought of ways of getting tv shows to pc users way back.
- sayten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work for an ISP and got a letter about myself for downloading Rome. Stupid asses, I pay for HBO, I downloaded something I have a right to watch, guess who's getting canceled.
- kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not really into watching Rome, but if the networks offered things like LOST in HD, via their own bittorrent (with ads) I'd go for it. Of course the affiliates would crap their pants. Beh... find a new model. We have.
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PG2
- procras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0got most of my rome eps from a private tracker (which of course eliminates this problem), but the ones that i got from public trackers had no problems. people are freaking out over this, despite the fact that bittorrent's very nature prevents bad data. so, maybe even 50 pieces were discarded. i don't care.
- cptshamrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like HBO content
Curb your Enthusiasm
Sopranos
Deadwood
Extras - siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So is Showtime Attacking BT yet??
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Copying TV episodes somehow creates a balance, do you know how many commercial promotions you see on an episode of 24?, well we have Ford, Motorola, Cisco Systems and DELL (now HP took over).
- aiiee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Curb Your Enthusiasm s05e01 = all trackers stop at 77%, all peers are probably poisoned, trying something different now, will see if it helps
- aiiee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fascinating. The only trackers out there for curb your enthusiasm s05e01 are poisoned ones, and all the peers are passing garbage. This is going to be fun :)
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Downloading a copyrighted TV show is not like stealing a car. It's like cloning a car. Deal with it. Understand it. Forumate a new argument."
Grade school failed you and you missed the point of my post.
The poster essentially said it is ok to steal from HBO because they do well financially. I was giving him an example to help him realize how ridiculous that statement is. - jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got busted a couple months ago for downloading Entourage episode. They called my ISP and had them turn off my internet connection due to a copyright violation. I had to call some 800 number for things to get reactivated. I don't know who the guy was I talked to but he told me HBO was upset about the uploading of the content (seeding the file after finished downloading) and not about me actually downloading the show to begin with. Not sure how true that is.
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What? How DARE HBO try to protect their rights to their own copyrighted material. It's not like they own it or anything, right?
Get over it, people. If you're going to try to circumvent the system don't be surprised when the system tries to stop you.
Instead of whining your time would be better spent looking for ways to get around HBOs latest stunt. - bigbooger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0License the content on the net, charge for it, and make it available world wide and they will attract users.
I'd pay to get direct downloads of shows, depending on the pricing scheme. Users know when they are getting arse banged with price gouging... let's see what happens when they try to raise Itunes prices... hehehe.
The problem is not the users, it's the lack of companies like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc.. nothing bringing the content to the customers in a manner that we want.
What these TV companies don't realise is TV is finished... it's an old way to deliver content. The internet is the new bag... and it's taking them ages to get with the "program" pun intended LOL
Regardless if you call downloading the shows legal or not, the reality is, it is being done.. and users want it.
If HBO, or any content company wants to stop it, then put it out there and give users a LEGAL choice... as it stands now, the only way for someone outside an HBO viewing area to watch this is to download it... is that my fault? Hell no. I WOULD pay if it were available. - keebler21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I received a message from my ISP also a couple weeks ago, for downloading entourage. They actually turned my service off for a day until I contacted them about my Internet being down, then they turned it back on and sent me some paperwork from HBO. At first I was worried, then pissed off. The way it sounds is that there just warning people, I haven't heard anything go beyond that. But now I got peer guardian on my PC and when ever I download anything from HBO media sentry is hitting me like no tomorrow. But I haven't had any problems since. I also agree that if I'm subscribing to HBO I should be able to Download all day with no problem. This whole situation is a bunch of BS really!
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For anyone that might see this.
The new "Rome 1x07 hdtv lol.torrent" found on mininova, is FAKE.
*FAKE*
http://www.mininova.org/tor/127371
*FAKE*
I have reported it at the site above, if you find any, please help report them, so we can bypass this crap. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is all a little silly. far as I can tell there just trying to bump intrest in these shows. FYI HBO. This only slows the downloads does not prevent me from downloading.
as soon as I find the IP Blocks your using. they can be blocked blunting the attact.
Your waste-in your cash. duckie. - Elusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have cable Internet but no TV. I'm with everyone that says that these companies need to have a bit torrent alternative or a lacarte. I'd gladly pay for ROME. But I don't want to pay $40-60 a month just to watch 2-3 hours of TV per week.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Downloading a copyrighted TV show is like cloning your mom and sell her into slavery.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not quite an accurate analogy.
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does any one know of a forum in which you can discuss the quality of torrents.
Such as posting of just ***** torrents?
This way you can check and see if others have reported it, instead of wasting your time.
If not, you all are welcome here... -> http://www.m4tt3r.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=16 - kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok and one more...
"Oh right. BMW pays lots of researchers and engineers to design the cars; then I can use this cool application that I found on the net to clone those cars and pass them around to friends and strangers so that no one actually has to pay BMW for all their effort."
Look, when that application exists and you can cost-effectively make a BMW at home... ***** bmw's BMW car PRODUCT. It'd be time for BMW to get with it and realize the old model is dead.. then move on to selling superior designs.
The model is dead. NEW MODEL TIME. And if the new model is sue your customers, or try to scare them into thinking you'll sue them, your days are numbered anyway.
Which is the more frivolous lawsuit, anyway?
The old lady that spilled coffee and got a million? (heh.. actually significantly less than that)
or.
Someone suing a little kid for downloading COPIES of songs?
Oh, that's right, when we say "legal reform" we only mean making sure doctors that screw people up can't be sued for it. I forgot. -
