- rtaibah, on 05/22/2009, -2/+468Some people are just hell bent on destroying the Internet....
smam RIP - iNunchuk, on 02/27/2008, -6/+293I speak for a collective amount of diggers when i say:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! You bastards! Don't ruin G-Mail, it was good god damn it. - Jadey, on 02/27/2008, -7/+274I think there's a simpler, more cost effective way of dealing with spammers. Spam costs millions of dollars a year to fight & prevent. Bullets cost pennies. It's simple economics. :P
- biss13, on 02/27/2008, -0/+153Is there anything that isn't doable provided you have time and desire?
- MadCactus, on 02/27/2008, -3/+149There goes the neighborhood.
- Zippo, on 02/27/2008, -2/+93Murder: solving all American problems since 1775.
- Hayaemsay, on 02/27/2008, -2/+79The only time I've had unwanted messages coming through Gmail is when Digg notifies me of a new 'fan'.
- inactive, on 02/27/2008, -4/+80I received spam on GMAIL for the first time EVER a couple weeks ago. I was floored. It's still 10x better than hotmail though.
Spammers are the scummiest people on earth. So are the people who put viruses in porn. - has2k1, on 02/27/2008, -3/+59If medical doctors wrote the gmail CAPTCHAS, am sure we wouldn't have this nonsense of bots cracking them and selling us unnecessary stocks. Fool proof plan, only pharmacists would have gmail accounts and we would still get our ViAgRa emails.
- Slade605, on 02/27/2008, -2/+58So you mean to say, there is hope yet to get me laid?
- borez, on 02/27/2008, -6/+58*****>SPAMMERS
- GeorgeStone2, on 02/27/2008, -0/+43Virus's IN porn you say?
Something like sexycheerleader.jpg.exe? - inactive, on 02/27/2008, -0/+42I flew all the way from coast to coast by flapping my arms, although the other people on the plane looked at me like I was a nut.
- kaph, on 02/27/2008, -0/+41The actual Websense report is a bit more interesting:
http://www.websense.com/securitylabs/blog/blog.php ... - mattwalton56, on 02/27/2008, -0/+36...wait that was a virus?!?! DAMN!!!
- bzaks, on 02/27/2008, -0/+32Hopefully Google will disable those accounts for being bots or something. It shouldn't be too hard to tell, granted then you have some privacy issues that need to be addressed because they'll be able to be attentive to your email activity......
- Protoss, on 02/27/2008, -0/+30Not really privacy, as then just checking with addresses have been sending 1000+ emails per hour, not the contents of the email.
- theghoul, on 02/27/2008, -0/+29The spammers would never stop as long as companies employ them.
Go after the companies and hosting providers. - inactive, on 02/27/2008, -1/+30No. Microsoft's CAPTCHA was cracked before Google's, and it was cracked using less hardware too.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 02/27/2008, -0/+28Still not nearly as dangerous as swallowing VIAGR pills or sending confidence money to Nigerian royalty.
- likwidtek, on 02/27/2008, -1/+27As all things tech it was only a matter of time. But as the cat and mouse game goes the big G will patch it and the universe resets itself. Thing bad thing about this is gmail does not display the originating IP address in it's email headers.. so blacklists won't be able to filter the spam as easily. Unless of course they blackball all of the gmail IPs which is a tall order. Not that this particular case (bot net with unlimited range of IPs) applies but any other spammers that hop on board could really benefit.
- inactive, on 02/27/2008, -0/+25Honestly, it was only a matter of time. I use all three services for email: gmail, hotmail, and yahoo. I've always gotten spam from yahoo addresses, I just noticed that I've been getting bombarded by gmail addresses in the last two weeks. Curiously, I haven't gotten any hotmail spam in over a year, that I can recall. I guess it really does depend on the number of users that determine the targets.
- WallyAnti, on 02/27/2008, -0/+24Why don't we organize and fight fire with fire. We need a website that profiles and tracks spammers addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, etc so that we can sign them up for as many online "free" offers as possible. We can block their front doorways with fliers, and put them on every donotcall registry exempt telemarketers list. Basically we should give them a taste of what they are doing to everyone.
- cesarandreu, on 02/27/2008, -0/+24I actually wanted to think up a witty comment, but everything I can think of can be done if you had enough time and put in enough effort. It would just take a REALLY long time in most cases.
- Coven, on 02/27/2008, -0/+24Well time and desire alone wont get it for you, but time, desire and money sure will.
- ChromaVita, on 02/27/2008, -0/+22Mars is doable. Things like proving the existence of God, and time travel isn't (as far as we know). There are certainly things that can't be done, but time and desire can solve a lot of things.
- ThetaDot, on 02/27/2008, -0/+21I will never set foot on Mars, no matter how much time or desire I have. Guess I'll have to settle for the moon.
- pond70, on 02/27/2008, -0/+20can i wish for more wishes
- jebsilver, on 02/27/2008, -1/+19Scarlett Johansson.
- crombat, on 02/27/2008, -1/+19You are wrong.
- passedoutghost, on 02/27/2008, -0/+17Well, I've always wanted to breathe in space without the aid of any oxygen tanks.
- jd72277, on 02/27/2008, -1/+18I think its because Hotmail has been forgotten.
- bitcloud, on 02/27/2008, -1/+17They just need to implement a visual captcha..
"please click the image of the cat"
(wherein there are pictures of various things and one cat)
Eventually it will be hard to differentiate the bots from the real people...
but I guess we can always resort to voight kampf - EmileVictor, on 02/27/2008, -0/+15If I were google I would've prepared an update to it so it could be quickly overhauled if compromised. Just give the spammers a completely different system to handle, it'll delay the inevitable.
- Aiwanei, on 02/27/2008, -0/+15Never heard of KittenAuth then? A captcha system where it tells you to click on the 3 whatever(lets say cats like your example and the original idea of the captcha) then there would be 9 pictures and the user has to select all 3 of the cats. The images are randomly named so it couldn't be easy for it to see kitten1.jpg or whatever.
more on it at it's website http://www.thepcspy.com/kittenauth - Kallius, on 02/27/2008, -0/+14Or just get rid of all the people.
- Spideristic, on 02/27/2008, -0/+13Time Travel maybe possible someday... but World Peace is not, it's the most fictitious term.
- jono10, on 02/27/2008, -2/+15Apparently I have a really small penis, suffer from premature ejaculation and like fake Rolex's.
- oshawapilot, on 02/27/2008, -1/+14The spammers being able to signup for accounts to _send_ spam is a different situation versus everyones Gmail account being deluged in incoming spam.
Gmails spam tracking and blocking ability is still second to none, and if you read the FAQ on the topic you can read a little about how it works not only on it's own, but collectively amongst all Gmail accounts.
I'd think that this is more worrysome for people *not* using Gmail for their incoming email, as it opens another venue for spammers to use Gmail for *outgoing* email more then anything else.
I'm not too worried about my Gmail inbox because of this - only about 1 or 2 spam emails a month slip through, and I've no reason to suspect that's going to change - Gmails systems will still detect spam the same as before, even if it's originating from a Gmail address. - HOOKSTER1231, on 02/27/2008, -0/+12retarded ass-comment.
- unluckier, on 02/27/2008, -1/+13That's a bit naive, actually. I think you meant to say: "Some people are just hell bent on making money using whatever means possible with the internet."
Hint: What happens if a parasite destroys its host? - pixelguru, on 02/27/2008, -0/+12FTA (links at end) it looks like they're only getting about 20% accuracy.
I thought the previous attempts to defeat captchas was more effective - armies of teenage boys who would eagerly sit for hours a day decoding captchas in exchange for access to prOn. It was the first time I'd seen that humans were being used as computer plug-ins. - BurnTees, on 02/27/2008, -0/+12i disagree with #2...isn't that what advertising agencies are paid to do?
- joebaloney, on 02/27/2008, -0/+12I would like to fly by flapping my arms...
- sinysteR, on 02/27/2008, -1/+12Classic.
- amweiss157, on 02/27/2008, -0/+11Try that math again :-P
20% is not 1 out of 20 - shakestheclown, on 02/27/2008, -0/+10agreed! same reason I refused to put a wheelchair ramp in front of my business. I'll be damned if I'm going to consider the handicapped, useless creatures. what the hell is the point of buying shoes if you're in a wheelchair?
next thing you know blind people will be wanting to follow baseball game scores, communicating with loved ones via email, or purchasing products online... - MadOtaku, on 02/27/2008, -0/+10Depends on the parasite. Some live on in the host's dead body, others escape into the surrounding environment, while others still move to a new host when their former one is eaten.
I get your analogy though. - sarixe, on 02/27/2008, -0/+10could be spoofing
