- zonemen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, you have to pay for it.
- Lindsay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope this isn't just a rumor.
- kfstickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First free useful webmail and now free wifi. Are they trying to spoil us?
- Red_Eye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be sweet.
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When AboveNet bridges that gap between Google and Comcast, Google has to pay as much as $60 per megabit in IP transit fees."
That can't be right. - zonemen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, will it only allow traffic to Google services through the WiFi?
- VictorV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think google is cool, what did google ever do to you?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool, I hope it's true.
- wnysteel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0those are a few big "what ifs".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is some pretty wild speculation. Just because they're buying fibre, doesn't mean they're going to attach wi-fi to it. Maybe they're planning on tapping in to local libraries and universities to search their resources. Maybe they want to be a top teir backbone provider. Wi-Fi is only one of a million possibilities.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... And I agree with Rndm_Tngnt: If that price is correct ($60/Mb), someone is trying to dump Google without breaking a contract or something.
- afinemetsfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mmmm dark fiber
- Wifiaffiliate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0we can start the google of the people. I am tooting our own horn here. But if YOU can profit from delivering the wifi then we don't need google do we. you can buy a wifi router w/ads and generate $$$$ via affiliate marketing or AdCenter? Give people the option to use your wifi with ads or pay for it. I think if you could make some $$$$$$ as a network publisher you would consider it. Free wifi for all.www.wifiaffiliate.wordpress.com
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, big != evil.
- wthnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0McDonald's offers free wifi right?
- agentpolgas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a huge Google fan. If this is true then this is definitely good news!

- sketchstudios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doesnt anyone remember a thing called NetZero? remember that whole pipedream? FREE internet, all you had to do was watch a few advertisment banners on your screen. But pretty soon people started to get around that and NetZero took a dive into charging for internet. why they still keep their name NetZero I have no idea, anyway... same idea with google.
- ktholliday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i want to have free wifi, that would be sweet not to have to sign up and register and pay for a servbice (ie: t-mobile) someone should start a petition
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what people would be saying if this were Microsoft...
- phil.busch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"yeah, big != evil."
Not true. Big, and closed is evil. Google is a very open company. They comission open source projects, and are doing stuff for the good of the people. So what if they want to make a buck with their ads? They are unobtrusive.
Now look at Microsoft, the company we all love to hate. They are very closed. They don't take help from the community on their software, and ship a half working product. They are not making stuff good for the people - they are just making ***** to make a buck.
Big isn't always good - but it isn't always bad either. - DjOverEZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't get me wrong, I love Google. I just hope they aren't beginning to get too ambitious. It's best to be good at a few thing rather than ok at a lot of things. Well, lets hope they can pull off what they want and still provide excellent products.
- m.sandstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it were Microsoft offering free wi-fi people would probably say that it's a way for them to fully control windows and have control over everyones computers. And they will lose even more trust in the people.
If Google does it they will be hailed as digital Gods! (0_0) - SurePete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> I think google is cool, what did google ever do to you?
it forces me to have online-marketing expenses in dimensions i never had before, when altavista and hotbot were ontop. - TCDToxic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google will take over the world...

Coffee - SurePete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0i hope it is just a rumor and that people will finally notice how evil google inc is.
- phil.busch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@Kevin_Rose: Stop posing as krose.
Sorry, off topic, I know. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Google's adsense is the most successful advertising service online though. Maybe that will increase the chance of it working if this stab-in-the-dark guess happens to be correct.
