- mmzz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39Keep in mind that this is for the "laugh, it's funny" category people :D
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30FTA: "Now remember, I’m not saying Google’s in talks to buy us. Far from it. I don’t even know anybody at Google."
Flagged inaccurate. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Sigh. Google's purchase of YouTube *DOES* make sense, for at least two reasons:
1) YouTube wasn't profitable because of enormous bandwidth costs. Google doesn't even PAY for most of their bandwidth, since they're big enough to peer with tier 1 ISPs. What bandwidth Google does pay for, they get at huge discounts for the sheer bulk.
Fact is, YouTube's bandwidth costs shrunk substantially when Google bought them.
2) Google has their own advertising service (AdSense/AdWords). YouTube is advertising with advertising.com. So there is a middleman who takes a large share of the profits.
When YouTube eventually gets around to switching over to Google's own advertising service, they'll get ALL of the advertising revenue. They make MORE money from every ad.
-----
So what have we here? YouTube's cost-per-impression goes DOWN, and their income-per-impression goes UP. Is that enough for them to make a profit? I'd say very likely.
Of course, that's not the real value of YouTube. The real value is YouTube's enormous mindshare. But that's another story. From a pure business standpoint, Google has the setup to make YouTube profitable by itself. - nox327, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26what a nice marketing scheme. Just say anything about Google on your companies blog, and you are already in talks of being bought.
- podgey22, on 10/12/2007, -17/+39"Dreamhost sucks. Please don't sign up with them, you will regret it very soon thereafter. Oodles of free space and bandwidth does not matter when your unbelievably small virtual server resource slice is too slow to actually make use of them."
How can you regret the $30 for the first year (with coupon discounts)?
How can you regret having all that space?
How can you regret any of that when they're not giving you a VPS. That is quite clear.
For the money, they're the best host I've ever used. Sure there are better hosts around for support. Sure there are hosts with better server features and better dedication but you PAY FOR THAT. DH is cheap and very cheerful.
You've clearly got some nasty, sharp sand in your vagina, and I'm sorry for that... But for every one "Waaaaa they stole my sweeties because I tried to host a torrent tracker", you'll find 100 "I really enjoy being with DH".
And yes, people need to know when something is silly or sarcastic, like this clearly is. The DH blog is where they have fun. They're not lying at all because they're just saying "what if" and "they might as well buy us" etc. It's retarded badger-pokers like greggles that cause all this *****... - johnnybravoh, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22I've got no issue with Dreamhost. they are a great shared hosting provider for the $10 & under crowd. If you want telephone customer service and guaranteed uptime, look elsewhere and pay more, but if you want a hosting provider that offers:
shell access - ssh
.htaccess and mod_rewrite(!)
daily backups
one click installs (common feature but still nice)
reasonable uptime
cheap hosting
great referral program ($97 for each site you refer - collectible after the site has been a paying client for 90 days).
reasonable bandwidth and diskspace
Check out www.webhostingtalk.com and research before you sign with any webhost. - rebz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Unsatisfied? From what? I've been a customer for over two years and I've never had any complaints.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Dugg for dreamhost's A/S/L?
- Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -19/+31hrm, i have a dreamhost website.. i hope this happens as that would probably increase my bandwidth speed. w00t! (its already pretty good, but as with anything online.. it can always be better!)
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Dreamhost is $5/month, FFS. You get what you pay for.
- allanak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Did anyone read the damn blog? It's a joke that the owner/newsletter/blog guy at DH posted and digg eats it up. Burying as lame.
- Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14If you guys actually read through their blog a little you will notice that they are a sarcastic bunch of people. One of the reasons why I like DH is because of their openess with the obvious flaws of their system/business model. They are pretty straight up. As podgey22 said, the price is right.
If your going to move to the next level and get VPS or Dedicated servers then yes, I would suggest moving to a new host. For run of the mill hosting... reselling, etc. Can't really beat em by much. - wintersweet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I love Dreamhost because they're so silly and yet highly competent. XD
- TravisS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I have a Dreamhost account and I have had 0 problems there web panel could use a major redesign! There referral programs is awesome I hope that won't go away if Google aquires them.
- ashanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The thought of an internet meme started by a company to force Google to acquire them after so much buzz on the deal is generated (Next stop, NYT anyone?) and pressure (read: don't be a Yahoo!) is hilarious.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Good luck getting better for $5/month.
- smb3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't know what kind of server they gave you, because I get around 800Kbs to mine.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8more likely people will digg it w/o reading either the actual site, nor these comments
- vermin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yea, you can't really go wrong with paying like 20 bucks for a year of hosting.
- chimneydials, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Everyone should blog about this and then the rumors would become big. Could be interesting.
- realyst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Dreamhost is damned cheap for what they give you. You don't like them, pay more elsewhere. I've been very very satisfied with them so far.
Yes, they go down more often then most, they slow down on some days, but for the money, that ain't bad. If I wanted to run a giant server op for a massive ecommerce outfit where uptime == money, I probably wouldn't go with Dreamhost.
However, for demo reels, personal sites, small potatoes ecommerce sites, guild sites, etc... they kick ass.
Oh yeah, and I hate it when people post news on Digg without researching for validity(like the "USB HDD WORKS ON WII OMG" post).... - PureRED, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's called a JOKE folks. A funny one at that.
- PeterTN, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12This isn't funny. At all.
- br549, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dreamhost is great!!!
- freakgd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4google bought my neighboorhood too.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love Dreamhost and have been using them for a while now, and haven't ever had a problem with their service. I don't see what everyone is bitching about!
- duster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Eleo -
"There are a great deal of unsatisfied Dreamhost customers... Just Google "Dreamhost sucks" and see how many people loathe Dreamhost."
You could Google for *insert any business here* sucks and you'll get all sorts of results. People like to bitch on the internet. - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree, they are great for a blog but probably not a business. I use them and I like them plenty. One little thing though - I am still not sure, but I think my cc# leaked out of their database and is being used by someone on the internet now. I had to cancel it but it didn't cost me anything. They claim that there was no breach so I can't really say... just the time frame leads me to believe that was the source.
By the way, don't digg this story as true guys; it's just a joke. If you already did, thank your lucky stars that you can go up and flag it as inaccurate. Now go on, do it!
What are you waiting for? Scrollbar is right there -----------------------

Hey uh, three cheers for dreamhost!!
Now um, seeing as you likely work for them in some way, can I have some free *****? - thevitus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2learn to read! The DH blog is fun, sarcastic, "whatif" and STATES SO VERY CLEARLY!
DH is a great service-provider with a great sense of humor!
The service/support I've received has been excellent!
The system has never - ops, besides the danged weekend where all went black - been down (since).
(very) happy DH customer!
thevitus - seks03, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6that would be cool if they bought us... would we still get to keep the arcade PC in the office? if not Ill go ahead and volunteer to take it home
- JEmerson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Absolutely no phone support, email only!"
I hate to say it, but that 'can' be a good thing in the long run. It depends on the reasons for it. I worked at one of the larger webhosts, and phone support was killing us. We'd spend an hour showing someone how to use an ftp program, listening to someone with a speech impediment trying to explain a situation he only had rough ideas about, or, and I'm not kidding on this, there was one guy who'd actually pleasure himself on tech support calls. Now, that wouldn't be bad if there was a special section for phone support, who 'only' did phone support and then fed the results over to someone else to get the fix done. But few, if any, webhosts actually have that.
Instead, the people taking the calls are the same who fix the problems. But, unless we're talking about apache going down or needing a mysql restart, a server problem or backup restoration is commonly going to take a fair amount of time to implement. An amount of time that isn't going to be there because the second the phone goes down so he can work on it, the phone's going to ring again. In the long run it produces pretty sloppy work, and band-aid solutions rather than actually fixing the real issues with the servers. - shae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i read, i laughed, i dugg
- GordonV, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Dreamhost prides itself on employee ownership. Even if they had an offer, would they take it?
- trueking7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Genius, that was pure genius Josh. What a priceless cyber-moment, thanks for sharing. When I pulled a similar stunt, the bastards at Google canceled my AdSense account--this made me lose $$$; I really don't like those chaps now and I'm sorry to say it but their stock will come crashing down sooner or later. Corrrrrrrruption! Corruption, pure and simple. Just like the YouTube purchase, it all reeks of corruption, insider trading, monopolization, globalization, multi-nation institutionalization--whatever, you name it--it's all corrupt. Well that's my rant for the day. Peace.
- mofotronimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i furggin love dreamhost.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Raccoons kick ass. The ones in Toronto are giant and fearless!
- JEmerson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone in the webhosting game is going to have a lot of unsatisfied customers. Not to say that dreamhost's criticisms are undeserved, but feel like I have to stick up for them a little bit. I don't know them, but I know the webhosting game. And it's a game filled with a lot of folks who just aren't very good with people. Think of the folks who only just understand email, and decide to pick up frontpage and make themselves a site about their pets.
Then, a year later, call in to ask that the hosting company restore from a backup made a year ago because she accidentally deleted half the site back then and only just now noticed. That'll usually find its way onto the internet as "They don't make reliable backups". Confidentiality keeps the hosting company from being able to show records, or even state their side of the issue. So all you'll get are complaints, whether justified or not, from the clients point of view. - tburke261, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11They must be really desperate for attention......
Considering I left them yesterday. Why? I had 1tb or bandwidth per month, but I could only get 50kbs back and forth to my server.
Goodbye Dreamhost, I will miss your newsletters but not your hosting. - Eleo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That just proves the point that Dreamhost has unsatisfied customers, genius.
@jacobmp92
Notice how there's more than one site about people's various difficulties with Dreamhost? There's pages and pages of Google results about it. I wasn't referring to just one site.
On the other hand, there are some webhosts that you'd have difficulty finding complaints about. Dreamhost over-oversells, and many users suffer because of it. - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I consistently max out my cable line downloading files from my Dreamhost-hosted site (I use it as storage in addition to hosting). 800kb/s+. The only problem I've had with Dreamhost is that they've had a DNS screw up, and one of my sites pointed to some "#seattlechat" website. Nice.
- bigdaddyforums, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Dreamhost has been having a tough time with their hardware & general quality of service lately. Nice to see they still have a sense of humor eh? :)

http://www.earnersblog.com - Koray, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I dugg it because the article was funny. What now? That's what I thought.
- jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6@Eleo:
Notice how there are only three complaints on that site, and they are all from the same person? Yeah.
Oh, and to add to johnnybravoh's post, the backups are also hourly.
SSH on a shared server is a godsend. - Deozaan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was the point of the entire post--To make people laugh. It was a joke and if you read it, it doesn't say anything untrue.
- lbrewster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DreamHost is an excellent webhost with a sense of humor, which is a large reason I keep paying. They provide hosting with a soul and brain. They also know how to make you laugh. This is an excellent post both in its hilarity and its possible seriousness, and is worth bringing to the attention of the general public as well as the google business department. These guys would be worth your while, even though they should never be bought out.
- greencross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the way these blokes do their job. I love the newsletters. Actually i confess its the only newsletter i read entirely, cos i don't stop laughing all the way down.
I wouldn't be surprised if Google wanted to buy you... oops.. i see 2 people with suitcases coming down the door...
Well if this fake rumor takes place anyway, please keep your "pre-google" customers clean, green and happy (free hosting and goodies for life, thanks).
Ciao! - cellar22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RTFN!!!
