- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4kinda impossible to turn open source (read free) software into a service.. MS has proven itself evil.. give google a chance to prove itself before labeling them as evil..
THey are throwing money and programmers at free software.. DIGG IT. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kungfustickman wrote: "Wow those Google guys are really being punks! ... I don't want to see Microsoft or anyone else put out of business. But if Google wants to contribute to Open Source software that we can all freely use, where's the problem? Hell, if Google wants to invest in anything at all, provided that it's legal, I don't think it is anyones business but their shareholders.
By the way, contrary to what some entrenched software companies are telling us, Open Source is not evil, anti-consumer, anti-competition or even anti-American. It's simply another way of obtaining a goal. - MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love Google. I don't care if they have every scrap of my personal info. They're Google. They're great.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"sound practical sense?" maybe. threat to MS? definitely.
I think this move is a little less philanthropic than it seems, but I like it anyway! - kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow those Google guys are really being punks! Does anyone else get that feeling? It's a clever way to beat out the competition. Contribute to open source projects...indirectly put other companies out of business.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lets hope this sticks!
- t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1PROGRAMMERS HAVE MINDS/BRAINS TOO YOU INSENSITIVE CLODS!!!
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Yes this will be interesting. It would be nice if they made it a bit nicer looking and less bloated. Google is good at minimalism but not so much at good looking apps.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0take that, MS.
- asshat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree with kungfustickman. In addition, improving open source software will eventually bite google in the butt in the near future from competition. Fighting fire with fire is whats gonna happen.
- WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ya redhat, except you can still download it for free, there selling hard material like the book and the cd, and there selling customer service not really the software.
- J_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I, for one, don't find OOo all that appalling to look at.
If you want it less bloaty, go to the Tools menu, and turn off JAVA. That's where a lot of the bloat comes from, and I doubt many people use its functionality. - btdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GOOD! Maybe now they can fix that horrible piece of software Evolution to actually work with SpamAssassin!
- funderbolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google starts an email server, builds a File Ssytem, buys dark fiber, now throws bodies, and in the future builds an OS. It is in The stars, they are about to start a full scale war with Microsoft!
One fights for windows. The other fights for what you have *in* your windows. - alanflores, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google's not talking about taking down microsoft. but sure action speaks louder than words... which reminds me of another article posted here that says google principals are offloading their stakes at the company... i wonder why that is??
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0M$ just got seriously p0wned.
In a perfect world M$ would only have 50% of any market at the most. Then innovation could actually occur for a change. Damn, that 94-99 period of browser innovation was exciting!
/ ubernerd :-o - Luke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This kind of support from Google for OpenOffice is good news!
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google has some of the best programmers in the US, and possibly even the world. I see this as being a great thing for the open-source community and users of OpenOffice.org, such as myself. If anyone can make an already great program even better, and smaller at the same time, it's Google.
- xenlab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ dhughes
I disagree: see www.picasa.com - however, the program could have looked nice before hand. - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0j_omega says: I, for one, don't find OOo all that appalling to look at.
I think it looks pretty good, but there are some things with 2.0 that bug the crap out of me, because they're such basic issues. For example...when resizing a window, what's with the continuous redraw of the toolbars? This same redraw stuff is apparent (to a lesser degree) when you double-click an object, and the rulers change. What ever happened to double-buffering?
Also, they need some heavy work on reducing the memory footprint and document load times - it's huge, and they're long. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WIthout Red Hat, we/I wouldn't have Fedora Core. Without Red Hat, I'm not sure Linux would've been as easy to prove itself capable of enterprise use/maturity.
I applaud Google's support of OpenOffice.org - though it is open source, a majority of the OOo programmers are actually from Sun and Red Hat. Despite the negative connotation a "corporate" background brings, I'm sure this plays no small role in the amount of polish that goes into the final product ( if it doesn't look good, Sun can't go and sell StarOffice at a premium). I also firmly believe that Google at this moment does have some of the smartest and talented programmers on the planet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yeah i heard of red hat.. point being redhat didnt kill linux with it's existance.. Not saying open source cant have services support it.. I am just saying it cant be killed or exclusively owned
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Interesting.
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow ... CNET? Didn't they just go through some big issues with Google? Surprised to see them reporting on them 0.o
- katsanes, on 01/30/2008, -1/+0Good Samaritans my arse, poke at MS if anything... ;)
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0But if it turns into subscription service who really cares.
- Sofa_King_Jank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Big issues," that is the ingenious marketing creating hype for future expansion.
