- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51Another "Google is an evil monopoly" bitch-storm from Microsoft in 3.....2......1..........
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Actually I would say the opposite: Google would have surpassed Microsoft by leaps and bounds, and much earlier, if Windows/IE didn't come with msn set to its homepage (and users weren't complacent enough to not bother changing). Plus, count all those embedded pages in MSN Messenger client and other such MS software.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Our chairs will blot out the sun.
Then we will search in the shade. - platinumrod, on 10/12/2007, -8/+39Get that spam outta here, guy. Also, if you actually care about results, use Google.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32The only reason it was microsoft was because every computer with Windows installed will initially go to MSN by default, and there are too many stupid users who can't find their ass to sit on, let alone know how to change their default home page. Then there are all the visits to microsoft's site to find out why stupid windows is crashing on them all the time, only to find that there are no answers, just lots of pages that mean absolutely nothing to them. With Google, you search, you find and you are gone. People are finding out that there are far more answers to be found someplace other than microsoft.com.
- sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38Who actually goes to Microsoft.com for anything?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28You mean Google wasn't already the most the world's most-visited website?
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+33Watch the chair supply, Redmond.
(Hint: 'Lucovsky said Ballmer threw a chair across the room and shouted: "***** Eric Schmidt is a ***** pussy. I'm going to ***** bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to ***** kill Google."' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballmer ) - gadgetboy32, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24That's funny how they play the Google vs Microsoft.
The most visited site is Yahoo in 2007.
http://searchengineland.com/070216-102423.php
Yahoo Sites, 129 million
Time Warner Network, 117 million
Microsoft Sites, 115 million
Google Sites, 113 million
eBay, 81 million
Fox Interactive Media, 75 million
Amazon Sites, 51 million
Ask Network, 49 million
Wikipedia Sites, 43 million
New York Times Digital, 40 million - i208khonsu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26So when is it going to be "cool" to hate on the Google empire?
- CyberSteve, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25you are an idiot hdtv...Google kicks Microsoft's ass any day, with or without its toolbar
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Am I the only one assumed this happened years ago?
- clesch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"The company's brand was valued at $66.4 billion, ahead of GE, Microsoft and Coca-Cola."
Now that's impressive. I had no idea that their brand is THAT huge, especially since I don't see a lot of "old-school" marketing for google going on... if any.
(I'm from europe, so YMMV if you're from the states) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15When they create Skynet
- jerryparid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18lol; I actually clicked on that site. Took me 1.5 seconds to load the page and 5.781 seconds to completely load. (On a 16 mbps Comcast Connection) And it has the message "searching" after I click search. Less failure; get out of here along with your spam.
Google = God - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Local Redmond News is reporting a Cloud-like swarm of office chairs has darkened the city skies in a Spinning Tornado and preparing to rip a hole through the Earths crust...More at 11
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Google = flying spaghetti monster
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12No, it will be googlezon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googlezon - k8nmodha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Dude don't hate...Google works great for the average user.
- pig13, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Dear google:
Put your money and influence behind a linux distro please
thank you - yoyar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Microsoft will have to change. That's good for everyone. The old Ballmer/Gates philosophy of destroy/sabotage your competion and steal what's left isn't going to work anymore. Microsoft will have to become a competitive force and partner in industry instead of an old school monopoly. That's good for everyone, including Microsoft. Ballmer will have to go. He's such a used car salesman loser anyhow.
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13This brings virtual tears of joys to my eyes.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Some Microsoft security updates like to swap evil and insecure google search to blessed and holy msn search in IE7 if you switch to google as default. That alone is probably responsible for most of whatever market share they've managed to keep.
- vhtrading, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yahoo has been the #1 overall-visited domain for years now (thanks in part to offshoots such as mail.yahoo.com and my.yahoo.com) Since when did Microsoft/MSN become #1?.
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11"Microsoft declined to comment"
If I had to comment for Microsoft on this subject, I'd say: "Get a life."
Of course i'd probably get fired. - Jordan117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Heh... in one hallway in the Communications department at my university, there's a big sign bearing the Coca-Cola logo that says, "How would it feel to work with the world's biggest brand?"
I guess they can take that sign down now. - zazzalicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In other words, the perfect Digg article!
- Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Thats not suprising that MS was number one due to their site being the default home page in IE.
- katyism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Of course it surpasses them. I always use Google to search the MS knowledge base, anyway, it's easier than MS's own damn search engine.
- camino262, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I thought it was a bit ironic that the end of the article was a google adsense box. Shows you how much they are dominating...
- etnu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"google" isn't the most visited site -- sites that google own (google, youtube, blogger, etc.) are, collectively, "bigger" than sites that microsoft (msn, microsoft.com, live.com) or yahoo (yahoo, flickr, del.ico.us, etc.)
Microsoft is second for a simple reason -- you have to use it to update windows.
yahoo.com is still the most trafficked domain (in terms of unique monthly visitors).
In other words -- another meaningless statistic for people to make poinless speculation about. - lorductape, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6it took that long???
wait....
MICROSOFT HAS USERS??? - kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Who actually goes to Microsoft.com for anything?"
Windows XP users (for Windows Update), owners of Microsoft peripherals looking for drivers, gamers looking for the bi-monthly DirextX redistributes, beta testers, security analysts who scrutinise the security bulletins, people who need help from the Knowledge Base, journalists, prospective customers and Microsoft employees. - FriendsOfWario, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The only way MS can beat google is if they create better UI's for there web based products and less ads, obviously this isnt an option because they would lose millions... which seems to be more important than respect from the community.
- Branden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@bioskope:
Yahoo! isn't exactly small either.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Yahoo%21-owned_sites_and_services - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"insert company I have an insane hatred for"
And what exactly do I gain by allegedly "hating" a company? Don't go around throwing accusations on people. I was just mentioning an observation. By the way 'complacent' is not the same as 'stupid', in case that gave rise to your confusion. - shableep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's hard to hate Google because their success derives from their focus on catering to their users... and understanding the human element. while Microsoft tends to force their users into a restrictive and profitable environment, exploiting the human element.
theres a difference between success through exploitation, and success by creativity and ingenuity. the success in each may be equal, but respected very differently. - drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not according to Alexa Yahoo is still king
http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?ts_mode=global&lang=none
I trust Alexa more than I trust the Mountain View search engine
Anyone notice the google search at the top - DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Google.com is near the top on its own , but add google.co.uk , youtube and all the others and then it'll be no.1
- prosep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Imagination and hard work always pay off.
- Netrilix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Goobuntu?
- fullphaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought Alexa was convinced yahoo was the top site.
- orangysb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ya exactly, based on statistics from the 3 main web metrics sites, Alexa, Compete and Quantcast, they all show that Yahoo! is the most visited web property on the internet
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wouldn't it be a good time to be wary of everything Google does, as it's really solidifying its place as a near monopoly in the Internet advertising business???
I can't avoid them altogether and honestly I rather wouldn't as I love Gmail and Google News, but this isn't the Google you first heard of when Leo Lapporte was praising them on "The Screen Savers"... - Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was surprised to find out that Yahoo was more popular than Google, I guess because practically everyone I know has google set as their homepage.
- rockets, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Powered by the most powerful OS in the world: L___x
(*Hint: not OS/X) - dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um -- you go to Microsoft's website for patch and problem information right ?
So only now does Google beat out Microsoft's site -- doesn't say a lot for Microsoft's code :) - Alex76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My two questions:
1) What happened to yahoo? With all the yahoo subdomains, I find it hard to believe Google has more unique visitors.
2) Brand awareness, I've travelled the world, and many folks don't even have a computer, and don't even know what a computer is, so how will such people know about Google. Coca-Cola on the other hand is virtually everywhere, and everyone knows Coke, so I think in my very unscientific way that Coke is a more well known, and therefore more valuable brand that Google. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yay, go us! :)
- Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Its because people stopped using IE which had msn.com as it's default homepage. Kind of a "if we have a monopoly on the browser then we have the monopoly on most visited page"
