- ConfusedCartman, on 11/02/2009, -2/+48That's because the services they offer are the *****! I mean, I'd be worried if we all used them even if there were better alternatives, but Google's products are top-notch AND free. You won't find me complaining about Google any time soon.
- Speedy7, on 11/02/2009, -4/+28I'm happy about more Google products. But I'm also afraid at the same time that they're getting a firm hold on our lives.
They're gaining control...
We google for things on the net, we get emails to our gmail account, we use google maps and google earth, we're practically living google lives. - echavez03, on 11/02/2009, -2/+21I own an iphone and this is the first thing that has made me want android. I hope Apple gets jealous enough and decides they need to give their customers a free turn-by-turn nav system thats on par with what I see on this video....
- zionoe, on 11/01/2009, -1/+18You can definitely save $100 now onwards..
- NathanLoehlein, on 11/02/2009, -0/+14Does it work offline? Sort of. Maps cache along your intended route, so even if your connection dies along the way the route will still show you what you need to see, and text-to-speech voice synthesis of street names still works, too.
http://gizmodo.com/5391408 - jtorkbob, on 11/02/2009, -0/+11In what way? I've never had a problem.
- pikelet, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8You mention ***** so much, I think you're the one with the fixation.
- Barackalypse, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8Is there any Android device I can get for under $300 that doesn't lock me in to a contract with a cell phone company? I can find plenty of Windows Mobile ones in that price point.
- mnocket, on 11/01/2009, -5/+12I wish they would fix Google Maps so they printed decently.
- MacParrot, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Apparently saying that you enjoy a particular device or service is the equivalent of performing fellatio on the company or creator of said service.
- qwertydvorak, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7print screen -> paint -> ctrl + v -> crop to what size you want -> add anything you want (text, etc.) -> print in landscape mode
very handy for long motorcycle rides through the country... - Shaggy6ster, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Unless you have every road in North America memorized, I think that has more use that you're giving it credit
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -2/+9Ummmm...people use GPS devices in the US too. Americans travel within the United States FAR more than they travel abroad. And I would guess that is true of many countries citizens.
- masterkenobi, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6I think Apple/AT&T needs to be careful. Google plans on releasing a number of phones that will also have Android 2.0 in 2010. Although iPhone may not be "dethroned" anytime soon, if any company can make a dent in their sales, it is Google.
- karan1003, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5this is one future I would gladly submit to.
- gkskillz, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5http://www.theonion.com/content/video/google_opt_o ...
- cbdgr, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4he said "the *****!" not just ***** big diff.
- ConfusedCartman, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Explain.
- DavidinBoston, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5Is there anything Google doesn't have it hands in?
This is how it starts. Seems innocent enough. Until one day, when the Googlator comes looking for Sarah Connor.... - linagee, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Turn right into human processing center #38271
(When google becomes skynet) - snootywaiter, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Arbitrary "LOL"s always seal the deal for me.
- jtechs, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3at least they will hit the intended target..
- Buckwyld, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3WAZE is a user generated free turn-by-turn GPS application you can download.
- yaosio, on 11/02/2009, -1/+4That will never happen, Apple fans think that more expensive means better.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3It's the type of directions you get from a Garmin or TomTom.
- fung, on 11/02/2009, -1/+4Well, I for one, welcome our new Google overlords.
- linagee, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Since everyone seems to be copying dash express, they should have a "report this as a bad route", since that's what dash has. (And then a real human will examine the actual route and fix up the map.)
- mbraynard, on 11/02/2009, -1/+3This is cool but has one major disadvantage: it requires internet.
I have TomTom on a WM phone, and the entire map of the US with thousands of POI. (I also have Google Maps mobile edition). I don't need an internet connection to navigate, and I get the POI updated frequently. I have an 8 gig micro SD card with all of the necessary data on it.
TomTom *can* take advantage of the net for traffic and weather, but it isn't dependent on it.
/it also has warnings for speed cameras and speed traps. Very helpful. - Buckwyld, on 11/02/2009, -3/+5I use WAZE on the iPhone. It's free and has user generated data to post accidents, police, and other cool notifications. Free turn-by-turn GPS happened awhile ago, but so many people missed the memo.
- JumboJ3t, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2I like my Google life.
- JumboJ3t, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2The iPhone will likely get this too, eventually:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-30684_3-10384544-265.htm ...
I'm sure it's not perfect, but for day-to-day GPS turn-by-turn navigation, I'll find plenty of use for it. Glad I didn't buy Tom Tom. Go Google! - qwertydvorak, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2see my above post about telenav. in the boonies you lose cell service, but about 10 miles later you dip into a valley and lose the satellite, after that you get a searching for service screen and you can't even use street signs to navigate because the stupid phone won't do that until you get back into not only satellite range but also cell range.
basically when you need the telenav the most, it craps out on you... - inactive, on 11/02/2009, -1/+3I know when I want electroncis, the first person I will trust is a company that has to spam digg.com for business!
- qwertydvorak, on 11/02/2009, -1/+3all google would have to do to kill ebay and paypal is release an auction site that had the features of ebay and only took google checkout. make sure the fees are dirt cheap, and at the same time stop promoting ebay in the search engine.
- Jnewman83, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Well...I guess its a good thing its on the Verizon network rather than AT&T's, lord knows I Sling on my Samsung Saga all the time on long drives and it barely ever cuts out. Thanks Verizon
- MrBrotato, on 11/02/2009, -1/+3Admit it, you're jealous your Garmin can't text and picture message, aren't you?
- margarian, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1I drive in the canyons and my service is horrible, so what would I do then?!
- JeffdaBeat, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1I paid $90 for Navigon, but the reason I left AT&T Navigator...or any company's navigator powered by Telenav is because if you are without signal, you don't have a map. Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint can preach all they want about their network, but every carriers has a zone where there is no service. If I could download the maps to the phone or even cache them, I'd be happy...other than that, I'll stay with Navigon.
- Kwipper, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1So... let me get this straight. Google Maps has turn by turn instructions... that are free.
Okay, what about the internet connection you need to pay for in order to get said google maps in the first place? Is that free?
Sorry, but I'm sticking with my GPS. - Suilenroc, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1It caches all the maps along a journey before hand. So as long as you start your trip in a cell zone and give it a minute, it'll have the maps ready.
Good luck if you take a wrong turn though. - Knowone, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1You can boot into android from an older Windows Mobile phone. http://code.google.com/p/vogue-android/
- jtechs, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1its free bitches..
- czarcasm, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1And you're a steaming pile of used douche-nozzles who lacks reading comprehension skills.
- mbraynard, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1Then why is it not already part of Google maps? I'm not sure the data belongs to google - I think they licensed some of it from Terrametrics.
- Ibox, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1no, they said they use the clouds, so you should be fine for the most part.
- Ibox, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1yeah but its free.
- yaosio, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2you are a liar.
- Smokezz, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2Ummmm, for what? There are lots of GPS devices out there. Just because it's free, they're going to get sued? Clues, aisle 4.
- Chipesh, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1Google rocks ! This looks far better than I had imagined.
Love to have one and throw that "pay me or you're out of date" TomTom in the bin.
Bob - powatom, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1This is great for those who need GPS in built up areas. A lack of network coverage could cause problems in rural areas though. That said, I can't wait to try this out.
