- civperc, on 04/24/2008, -2/+103Google knows what they're doing and are easily making this back in productivity. Treat your employees right and they'll treat you right :)
- Quick2822, on 04/24/2008, -1/+67I'd be thankful if my job gave me any food, let alone the high quality gourmet food Google provides its employees.
- rwbronco, on 04/24/2008, -20/+69om nom nom nom!
- Seventus, on 04/24/2008, -3/+47A small cost to maintain a phenomenal work force.
- MiDri, on 04/24/2008, -0/+34Well then they must be eating roughly $20.63 worth of food per day.
- Qdub, on 04/24/2008, -2/+33The enormous amounts of money google makes? It adds up.
- TomFrost, on 04/24/2008, -0/+28Since you just joined two days ago, here's a tip.. even though people may fully agree with what you're saying, you're about to be dug into oblivion because you put a link to your website (even worse, a completely unrelated link to your website) in your comment. People frown on self-promotion here because it gives the impression that you're only here to drive traffic to yourself.
- dafragsta, on 04/24/2008, -0/+28I wish more companies got that.
- TomFrost, on 04/24/2008, -2/+29That's what I thought at first, but I'm honestly not so sure. If you had a good, well-paying job there, it might be well worth it to spend $7k to have all your meals not only handled for you, but of a quality you can't get by running to a deli somewhere every day. Google campuses tend to be in expensive regions, so you'd be spending well into four digits a year on lunch regardless. Might as well spend a bit more (from your well-providing salary) for higher quality and stress-free meals :)
- rblancarte, on 04/24/2008, -1/+28I think that this is what most people miss when they see all these things that Google does for their employees. Everyone talks about them doing all these great things and what not - Free Meals, free laundry service, free on site doctor (not just a nurse, but a real doctor), dog-friendly office, etc. I have also heard about people that can run errands for you (pay bills, wash your car, etc).
And like you said - Google is doing this for a reason. Not only to treat employees right, but also so that they don't have to leave the office. If a guy gets sick, and it really is nothing major, would you rather he takes 2 hours off to go see his doctor, or go see the on-site doctor that will take 30 minutes? A guy leaves right at 5 PM so he can spend some time with his dog? Nah, let him bring the dog to work so he spends more time in the office.
I am not trying to say that Google is doing this for evil. But in many ways they are doing stuff to keep people in the office. Though I would say the services offered are nice, and I certainly would not complain. - VintageMud, on 04/24/2008, -0/+23They have a ton of selection, gourmet chefs, etc.
The sad thing is, the meal plan at my old college STILL cost more... with crappier food. - diggopolous, on 04/24/2008, -0/+22At my last job, they provided copious amounts of ***** sandwiches.
- theotheragentm, on 04/24/2008, -0/+20They could cut that budget quite a bit if they got rid of the damn bottles of water that retail for $5! Seriously, who needs to drink that stuff? Hmm...on second thought, maybe there is something to the phrase, "What's in the water?" I'm going to stock up on some of this stuff and create my own non evil doing empire.
- mobilehavoc, on 04/24/2008, -9/+27I'd happily take that $7k in my paycheck instead...
- inactive, on 04/24/2008, -1/+18A lot of companies get that, but most CORPORATIONS do not.
- Diganta, on 04/24/2008, -1/+17I believe the numbers are wrong in this report. Google did an internal study to see how much Googlers thought these free meals were worth. The average estimate employees came up with was 5K. When in reality Google was spending between 2K-3K, therefore Google decided that it was well worth keeping. Because the perceived benefit was greater than what they actually paid.
- squeevey, on 04/24/2008, -1/+14Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't google feed them breakfast lunch and dinner?
If you calculate 5 days a week (which I'm sure some google employees work more than that).
That's about $29 dollar a day.
$9.67 a meal. That's about average price for a meal these days. If it's gourmet, it's a good deal. - civperc, on 04/24/2008, -3/+16Ok, Kevin Spacey...
- TheObviousChild, on 04/24/2008, -0/+13I wish I could think of something witty to say, but I'm consumed with jealousy. My faceless corporation doesn't give a ***** about me...or my appetite.
- h3smith, on 04/24/2008, -3/+15What the hell are they feeding them? Even if you are personally eating $15 worth of food a day, that is ~$5500 a year.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 04/24/2008, -1/+13Yea if you live off of Ramen and Skim Milk then sure it should go in your paycheck, but for people who like to eat real food...
- ThatEvilGuy, on 04/24/2008, -0/+12I'm not that smart but can I apply to Google as a janitor? I'm sure being a janitor at Google pays and feels better than being in a high position on some other job.
- NJank, on 04/24/2008, -0/+12hmmm... at 50weeks a year, 5 days a week, that's $30/day for lunch. **looks at his brown-bagged PBJ in dismay**
- dandonia, on 04/24/2008, -0/+11It's more of a way to bring the best applicants to google. They have the best reputation of any company for staff not leaving, so anybody they take on they will want to be the best in the world at their field.
This is hoe every company should work - alpha94, on 04/24/2008, -0/+10Payroll vs. tax deductable expenses. Tax deductions wins.
- wacki, on 04/24/2008, -0/+10In a world where gas $4 a gallon $20 a day for food *at your door* is a steal. Think about how much free time this opens up for you. Think about how this reduces gasoline purchases, wear n tear on your car, preparation at home time... etc. Google has it right.
- phoomp, on 04/24/2008, -0/+9So few employers understand this simple fact.
When I was a kid, I worked at a locally owned retail store that asked us to work through our lunches on Saturdays. Normally, I'd say "no way", but every Saturday, they provided an excellent selection of food that we could eat when we had a chance. We gladly worked through lunch. - dandonia, on 04/24/2008, -2/+10Irony Hi-Five!
- pdangelo22, on 04/24/2008, -0/+8in contrast, i used to work for EMI, and we had to buy our own water!!
- zydeco, on 04/24/2008, -0/+8Yeah, the food just magically appears in the Googleplex. No need to hire chefs, dishwashers, maintenance staff, etc.
- GeorgeStone2, on 04/24/2008, -0/+7So now you work at the whitehouse?
- Llanowar, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6I doubt you'd care much about that $7k if you got paid what google employees get paid.
- Llanowar, on 04/24/2008, -2/+8From everything I heard and read they really aren't underpaying their employees.
- eigenweasel, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6Fat bastards.
- NJank, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6dude.. the white chocolate macadamia nut cookie dough... worth it.
- lolinyerface, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6Go back to bed. Doom and gloom isn't scheduled until next week.
- CHAD3814, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5Here's the really odd thing, I used to work at Yahoo, and when I went to Google one day to have lunch with a friend, I saw three janitors and two security guards that used to work at Yahoo, now working at Google. So they aren't just taking the best engineers, they are also taking the best janitors, the best security and based on the quality and taste of the food, I would also say they were taking the best chefs, so I can only conclude that Google takes the best of everything.
- Murdats, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5working for google would be awesome.
however I work for a nice start up that is trundling along well, and we have a beer fridge at work not to mention the free meals and drinks shouted on special occasions, its not google but its still pretty damn sweet. - philhatesyou, on 04/24/2008, -2/+7That's the biggest load of ***** I've *EVER* heard. Especially if you include all of the ludicrous annual bonuses those guys get.
- cresswga, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5Plus snacks on demand which drops the price per meal even further.
- mrand01, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5what about elevensies
- diggopolous, on 04/24/2008, -1/+6They should be commended for offering this to theeir employees. The amount my job provides falls into the negative numbers categories. That is taking account all the Girl Scout Cookie donations, Bake Sales, Christmas treat solicitations from fellow staff. The latest was someone peddling cookie dough - that's right cookie DOUGH!
- evildaz, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5I was gonna work for google, but they refused to pay for all my crack and whores......
- mobilehavoc, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5Read this and have your eyes opened to the truth: http://www.indeed.com/forum/cmp/Google/05390c183c1 ...
- cgruber, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5If the stock ever takes a turn for the worst the first thing to go will be the free lunches. It's how public companies work, when things are good the shareholders don't care, but when stuff goes bad all the perks that could save money get cut.
- xtremesniper, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4Snack bar items are included.
- themastersb, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4I must have seen that comment once in every article in the past couple weeks.
- johnroth, on 04/24/2008, -1/+5Oh no, Google, one of the richest companies on Earth, is spending a lot to feed their employees! WWAAAAHHH!!!!!
- markdr123, on 04/24/2008, -2/+6So let's get this straight...you're bitching about a comment that's bitching about a comment.
Edit: And yes, I am well aware that I am now bitching about a comment that's bitching about a comment that's bitching about a comment. Oh well... - chanop, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4*maxmize the screen
