How is that questionable? - M4v3rIC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I have been to China, I have lived there for quite some time.
people are losing reality with this whole "Google censoring China" topic we got here,
first of all, if you go to www.google.cn and search, you'll get what the chinese people are SUPPOSED to get.
it's filtered for us, but not necessarily for them. Since China has so many people (what like 1.5 billion now?) they have a large number of ISP's and since China's booming economy is growing so fast, ISP's are popping out of everywhere and the government is having a hard time controlling them. Most ISP's in the big cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou) are being filtered, but other places are not filtered.. simply because they cannot be controlled. I lived 2 hours from Guangzhou, nothing was censored. In most of the big cities Wikipedia is blocked too, mine wasn't.. my connection was also ALOT faster than here (in Canada) and 1/8 the price. North America is FAR behind in internet technology. - Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This guy has been drinking way too much google juice.
- mortal-god, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8China made the choice simple, either censored search or no search. While it sucks that google was forced to censor the results, we have to take baby steps.
- spriggig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There is NO NEWS here, it's a fluff piece about Gabriel Stricker jerking off to his stock portfolio. Shame on you diggers.
- u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Google's questionable ethics in China? What about CHINA's questionable ethics!?!? Google is opening up a world for the Chinese that they otherwise would likely not even have a chance to know existed... kudos to Google for putting some power in the people's hands. Once the Chinese get a taste of the 'limited' Google.cn, they'll demand more. Just another benefit of the democracy of the internet.
- SkaAgent11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Google is a search engine that makes clone software by buying out other companies.
Excuse me if I don't exactly masturbate to google's business plan. - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I haven't seen Google come out with anything impressive beyond their original use of Stanford's search algorithms and the advertising model. Let's go down the list.
Gmail - Lots of space thats nice. Search feature isn't that great considering its Google. Crappy interface compared to other Webmail providers. Perpetually in beta and logs you out randomly like you'd expect.
Google maps - Just another Internet map service NEW INNOVATIVE AJAX SCROLLING SUPPORT. True dat, double true!
Google earth - Keyhole rebranded with a Google name.
Google talk - Simply way behind all other instant messaging clients. AIM had voice chat in 1999.
Google base - Crappy interface and nothing new here.
Google video - ***** flash-based player. And they're trying to charge you for it?
Google hardware - Yeah, I'm sure sales are through the roof on completely proprietary embedded search appliances
Adwords - Who needs innvovative features for users when you got cool contextual text ads?
Google Data Mining - Put on tin foil hats now! - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, if the author wants to extend his stem cell analogy, Google is more like a cancer that spreads without taking direction from a central "brain." And while Google's "20% free time" to work on your own project may seem great, I don't know anyone that works in an office environment that actually workd 80% of the time in the office. Personally, I'd rather take that 20% for personal time rather than letting Google own my intelectual property.
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Google ... has questionable business ethics in a COMMUNIST country?
Since China was the one telling Google to censor democratic content, I'm pretty sure it's not Google with the more questionable business ethics there... - drewcurtis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8google could die tomorrow, and no one would be that put out by it. there is nothing google does that can't be done relatively as well be someone else. i don't understand the pantswetting that goes on with google fanboys. frankly i don't trust google, and go out of my way to never use its products.
- slackor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Some people seem to think that in 20 years we'll be driving Google cars and eating Google food. They are a great company now, for their time, but someone will inevitably replace them. They got huge overnight and don't think they can disappear that way too. That's just how the Internet works and Google isn't immune to this trend.
- dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1invincible? Hardly. A crash in online advertising would kill them pretty fast.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1google DO NOT need to take over the world. Why would the world give all their personally trackable data to a company that can do what the hell it wants with it? Especially when there's potentially links to the american government.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on now, they have a lunch room filled with so much free food that they could feed Africa. They're gaining power but people seem to forget...they're nothing but a search engine.

Come on diggers help me out and click this link: http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks.php?r=3654 (105/1000) - kola_kidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What are you talking about? The Chinese aren't stupid, they know what's happening the world over, that's why they're the fastest and strongest growing economy right now. Now you wouldn't get to this position by using Google as your international business consultant. Christ man think before you speak.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The masses use the search and that's about it. Maybe maps. The rest of it just helps the stock price.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if google ever finished a product it would be good. Ahhh, if only. ¬_¬
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What do you use then?....Yahoo? HAHAHAHAH!!! faggon waggon
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what would have been less questionable is telling the chinese government to go stuff it, and for google to pull out of china. That was the right thing to do. The internet is about free speech, and google don't do anything bad. Instead it caved in to the chinese government because it wanted the money.
as for chinese internet.. if you're going through the great fire-wall of china you'll find that speeds are rediculously slow. almost as slow as dial up. In that respect china is not only closing off what it deems politically correct, but also most of the entire internet (everything outside china - or everything inside china if you're accessing from outside). in an idealogical sense, that doesn't sound better than practically every other country that has internet access.
I'm surprised that certain isp's aren't going through the great fire-wall though - they will no doubt be shut down soon enough, and the people running them may very well disappear in to the chinese 'justice' system. - SolidusSon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Next thing you know they'll be offering The Google Communism Suite (TM) "This suite of Pre-built Social Services is simple enough for the casual household dictator, yet extensive enough to satisfy even the most experienced fascist."
- u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Bottom line is they are bringing this stuff to the masses and do a great job at making it simple enough for the average Joe and technical enough for the tech-heads who like to play with API's etc. No one would have paid much attention to Keyhole if it hadn't been for Google. Gmail just rocks... best spam protection out there for a web based client. Hotmail funnels spam into your inbox as soon as you sign up and even after opting out of like 75 spam generators. Google talk is going to rock once they open it up to the AIM network. Agreed about Google base, never really found that appealing myself. Google video is allowing access to things like the National Archives.. how can you not say that it's not a cool app? Google datamining? EVERYONE datamines! Now if this comment makes me a google fanboy, so be it.
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Rammonnee, bring Digg a sweet buyout by Google.
- camarofloyd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I love Google because no one knows how to do it better.
Ethics schmethics, Google needs to take over the world. Period. - thecossackkid, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Great story... I wish some consideration of google's questionable business ethics in China had been addressed, though

What is Digg?
