- benlong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48Can I buy ads on the sides of the buses?
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Every time I see a story about how awesome it is to work at Google I think; "Well, it can't get better than that", and then there's another story that highlights another thing that Google just gives it's employees.
...it can't get better than that. - robharper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Oh yeah? We get FREE, UNLIMITED COFFEE at my work.
Suck on that, Google. - hitmikey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Digital ads + adsense according to businesses in the area its travelling through ftw.
- montec11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19my company,Kraft foods, just dropped their shuttle program. apparently 60 million in CEO bonus outweighs 140k a year for shuttle service.
- rockstar1o9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18The free food, the shuttles with internet access, the laptop for each Googler...they're all there to increase productivity. What you never hear about is how a lot of Googlers take their food to go and eat at their desks so they can work through lunch. The internet access on shuttles...ever thought about why it's there? You use it to check email (which you would otherwise spend time doing at work) or you use the time to get an extra half hour to an hour of work done. These "perks" pay for themselves.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20you probably could..maybe theres a adwords program designed for their buses
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15i dont know about you guys, but i would totally buy google vodka
- dralezero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I read that as George Bush
- wassim2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah, that article definitely merited two pages.
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18White earphones don't always = iPod.
- DarkPilot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No, the Google helicopters will be white. Sheesh.
- domr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Already been done:

Clicking the ads is quite difficult though. - evilesttoast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So did I...wait. This can only mean one thing.
THE GOVERNMENT IS WORKING WITH GOOGLE TO MAKE US LIKE BUSH! - inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@robharper - you are one lucky bastard!
We have to buy our own coffee. And the nearest coffee place is owned by the CEO's brother-in-law's kid. Talk about a conflict of interest... - Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ahhh dude, the first rule of google club is...
- sillypickle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Whoa, assumptions. Spouse?
- Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6umm, I like bush but shaven is OK too.
- pneumatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5As a Googler, I can say that dogs in the workplace aren't really a problem. They can't be taken into the cafes, and they can't be brought in if they misbehave or your office/cube mates object, but those can be worked around. I quite like having them in the office. Kids, OTOH, tend to be much louder and more disruptive, but are usually only brought in as the exception rather than the rule (but they *can* be taken to the cafes. :-)
That being said, many of my coworkers come from cultures where dogs aren't kept as pets. They often aren't as thrilled. In middle eastern cultures dogs are viewed as dirty and people don't like having them inside. In south asian cultures (primarily India and Pakistan), privately owned dogs are often used a guard dogs, and people from those cultures often react fearfully. Having a 90 lb. (~40 kg.) dog come bounding up and try to lick you can be quite frightening. That's why the dogs have to be very well behaved.
Oh right.. and about the shuttles, they ROCK! Of course, you are sharing one 128Kbit/sec internet connection with 20-40 other people, so anything other than checking your email is a loss. - spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One of my coworkers often brought his dog into the office. He wasn't a bother at all. I suppose it's a problem if you're in a cubicle farm, but Googlers aren't.
- inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ever seen an advertisement when you do a google search? Many companies are more than willing to pay top dollar to an internet site that gets as many hits as Google does. PLUS they get the advantage of advertising to an audience who is searching for something in particular (just so happens to cover their target market).
- pak314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One of my previous employers used to do it too in the booming 90s. But these kinds of perks never last forever and when they are gone, it can make you feel worse than never having them in the first place.
- reiner15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@darkpilot
They COULD be white, but the black ones would save energy! - reiner15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm sure that CEO didn't take the shuttle and instead drove in at 10am and left at 2. It's no wonder he didn't think they needed it.
- spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ah, but where's your internet access? :)
- Jahz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@hugejimmy
Google is one of the - if not THE - largest and most powerful internet advertising agencies. They make bank on the ad sales for providing context-specific bid-driven ads on the Google search results pages and literally MILLIONS of websites around the net. Companies actually bid for ad placement in near realtime. A single click on a very expensive Google ad could net Google several dollars in revenue! - Zuhaib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well not to get all local but...
This article just shows why companies in the Valley need to get together and help get BART to San Jose! One thing that never made any real sense in the Bay Area is that BART, which is the underground Rail that right now in the northern part of the bay area, does not run to the one place where now a vast majority of the jobs are.
I can see companies helping with the cost to get BART to the SV, and help traffic. And it will even keep the green people of the Bay Area all happy! - towca, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7True for ~ 10%, but 90% of white buds=ipods. Those guys are probably all carrying ipods. Maybe one zen and one iriver.... at most
- woodcoxcb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6i think unabomber meant...
ORLY?! - inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@afex - even if it were made by collecting the steam from boiling expired advertisements?
- inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't think kids belong in a veterinarian's office either - any more than pets belong in a pediatrician's office.
Maybe what nogami meant was that the type of people who would bring their pets to an office, don't belong working in an office. And they should become veterinarians? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Well you do have mass transit options using BART to get to SV. Hop on the Caltrain Train that runs well into Sunnyvale get off on Castro and you've got access to the light rail that takes you into all of San Jose. It's not an express run by any means but it gets you where you need to go."
That takes what? 2 hours each way? - AxeSwinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well you do have mass transit options using BART to get to SV. - Quidam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2reading about stuff like this makes me wish I was a Computer Science major. At least then I'd be qualified/have the slightest chance to work their company!
- AxeSwinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Which is about the same time it would take if you drove during commute time to get to San Jose from the Financial District. You don't have the stress of driving to worry about for me it was time well spent. I did it for a year it's not ideal but it works.
- blankfaze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I read the Times this morning, haha, I would have saved my time if I would have known every story in the paper would make it to the front page of Digg.
- Jahz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, some employees DO live in Google Corporate Housing. I've never been there but one of my friends lived in a GApartment for a month and apparently its really really nice (but not free. quite expensive.)
As for Google Cigarettes, that would not jive with the companies "eco-friendly" and healthy employee mantras.
The Vodka would be something to see :) - tomarocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See...I wasn't that far off. (Now why did I get dugg down?)

- jimmajamma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else find it interesting that the only company referenced by the article that did not have a hyperlink was Microsoft (see the end of the article)?
I wonder if that is some sort of bias, or just an oversight. - nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"All I know is that dogs are man's best friend and nogami hates kids and dogs."
Troll much? - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Not that big of a deal. At Microsoft, we get free bus passes because traffic around here is pretty bad as well.
- towca, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6man.... working for google must rock...
what else is new? - basictheory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Many other companies do this... ie: Yahoo! runs shuttles between campuses, the Mt.View Caltrain & East Bay, and a number of coach buses to and from San Francisco with WiFi
Adobe also has caltrain passes for their employees to get from SF and San Jose - hawk_eye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1surely you are not salivating over a free bus ride are you ! come on mate ... there's more to life than that !
- MainframeF4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No more "My car broke down" excuses. Google's smart.
- evilesttoast, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Their not iPods, their gPods
- Jahz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@robharper
Google employees ALSO get FREE unlimited coffee, expresso and cappuccino from fresh ground beans. As well as a modest selection of non-coffee beverages and bottled water in coolers located throughout the buildings. Sorry to burst your bubble. I don't work for them, but I did interview there and take a few personal tours. - chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"oh really? :)"
Ya rly. I use my ipod headphones with my phone, because my ipod is a bit big to fit in my jean's pocket for listening to on the bus. - tomarocco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1All I know is that dogs are man's best friend and nogami hates kids and dogs.
nogami: Be glad we don't work together because I'd let my kids run screaming all over the office and let my dog ***** in your cubicle. -
