- JohnnyXmas, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3He's not saying the companies are failing, he talking about their shortcomings.

- sodade, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Welcome to corporate america...
- sodade, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1I didn't say they were failing (please go look up "failings") at all. I am just saying that these monolithic companies look fragmented to their customers because you have so many different organizations with separate P&Ls. It is a major failing and yes, these companies also have plenty of positive qualities along with their failings.
- evilhomer201, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Just sounds like a buzzword to me. Divisionalization < Even the spell checker says it's not a word. :-)
- ozziek, on 06/05/2008, -1/+2SURELY it has to be harder to type like that instead of using reel wordz?
- ZachSka87, on 06/05/2008, -2/+3Oh yes....those poor, poor, failing top-of-the-industry companies.
- AutoTom, on 06/05/2008, -1/+2gayest comment ever
- JohnnyXmas, on 06/05/2008, -1/+1Are you aware that most of those guys work 12-16 hours a day, six days a week?
- Steinr, on 06/05/2008, -2/+2no I don't think so. He does not comment, vote or advise on any of apples matters relating to any areas that could potentially be of conflicting interest for google. take the iPhone he has publicly announced that he has had no input to it while on the board of apple because of googles androit platform plans at the time.
- FUR10N, on 06/05/2008, -2/+2wow, so my guess is that you think it is cool to type like that; I'm sorry but I stopped reading you post when I reached the first comma, it is just so horrible. It looks like someone seriously just dropped you off here from a WoW forum.
- kowalzki, on 06/05/2008, -1/+1in testing it's called a washback effect. Basically, the test should test how good you're at sth. But because you want to pass the test you'll rather do whatever it takes to pass then test, rather than get better at sth, because getting better != passing the test.
Now think of google and web publishing. Copywriters put meaningful words in anchor text, put keywords in bold, use certain words simply to target adsense, etc. Webmasters are afraid to link out to "bad neighbourhoods" (my frind runs a porn site, why shouldn't I help him and link to it from my poetry blog...), don't want to exchange links because they think only one-way links count, etc.
Imho google is changing the net, some of it for better, some of it for worse. - sodade, on 06/05/2008, -4/+3FTA: "We certainly could have a big company organized into 20 small companies. That's called divisionalization. We went through this at Sun (JAVA, Fortune 500) [where Schmidt was chief technology officer] and I'm rather cynical about it. The argument is that divisionalization allows you to have general managers who then make operating decisions that are fast moving. The problem with that is if the customer wants an integrated experience it now looks like they're looking at a federated experience."
Divisionalization pretty much sums up the failings of the biggest tech players: MSFT and CSCO. - mokodo, on 06/05/2008, -4/+2my god...

you really seem to know what you are talking about... what's your major, law? - AutoTom, on 06/05/2008, -4/+1i hate google
- ozziek, on 06/05/2008, -6/+3Dear Google developer, when you get time between the 3 paid meals a day and fun and frolics of working on crazy Google apps, would you mind updating the Google Toolbar and Google Browser Sync so it works on Firefox 3 RC or at least give us a seperate one, even a beta that we can use?
- Steinr, on 06/05/2008, -9/+5Schmidt is a business genius, I wish I could have 10 minutes face to face with him in my lifetime. It is all good being the inventor of a technology and profiting from it, but what he does is make sure it makes that profit. I admire his business acumen and sense of what is right for the long term business success.
- fas2, on 06/05/2008, -10/+5Very well written article and an interesting read!
- Haecceity, on 06/05/2008, -7/+2Tope, wrong. Trope, right. You'd think Fortune magazine could afford decent copy editors.
- Flappy3, on 06/05/2008, -9/+4"You could imagine that Google Apps [the company's Web-based package of word-processing, spreadsheet and e-mail programs that mimics Microsoft's Office franchise] taking over 90 percent of our time. We don't allow that because we're disciplined about spending a lot of time on our core businesses. We hope at some point Google Apps will become a core business, but today it's not, so [that's] a threat of distraction."
- ohplease, on 06/05/2008, -10/+5
Google's biggest problem is that they used the structure of the internet in order to define the way searches are ranked (PageRank algorythm). Unfortunately they became so important of a search engine that the internet changed in order to accomodate Google. Heisenberg would be proud. - robszol, on 06/05/2008, -13/+8Google is invincible. It's on God Mode.
- kymoie, on 06/05/2008, -10/+5I like google, and google apps.
So long as they don't get too power hungry, and so long as they continue to let their employees use 20% of their time on creating cool things like google maps, they should have a bit more growth left in them yet, and a few very happy customers. - chadell, on 06/05/2008, -6/+1Where there is money there is vice, and Google is no exception.
- Totov, on 06/05/2008, -8/+3*Generic comment hoping for positive feedback*
