- Jorlwind, on 10/11/2007, -10/+242$4.6 Billion dollars is a good way to say your not ***** around.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+239Bravo to google. Not a single good thing has ever come from the likes of AT&T and the rest of the telecoms. They could give a ***** about consumers and, likewise, I could give a ***** about them or their ***** services.
- shadowmoose, on 10/11/2007, -6/+161Google FTW.
- smurf22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+132If I used google as my search engine, video provider, isp, and phone provider I wouldnt care. Theyre better then anyone.
- ttpmx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+118More evidence that Google is trying to own all of the tubes. At least they're doing it right.
- Squeeself, on 10/11/2007, -0/+80What's great about this isn't the fact that Google is going to buy up a portion of the wireless spectrum. It's that they're trying to force telecoms into this more open network, a network where the consumer wins. Telecoms will likely occupy the biggest portion of the network, but if it's a more open network with the rules that Google wants, then it won't really matter: the consumer will be much happier than they are now. Google's sticking it to the telecoms, and that's wonderful in my book.
- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+72telecoms suck ass. 5-10cents a text message. are you kidding me you know how little bandwidth that is? I was hoping google would develope their own ISP but this is good too.
- designerwe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+75Google Rules
- Farmer77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+57I need to get a Google T-shirt.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+68...and an even better way to say YOU'RE not ***** around.
Ya get my drift? YOU'RE instead of YOUR. Get it? GOD DAMNIT. - RussellDovey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44Wireless isn't tubes. That's where the trebuchets and zeppelins come in.
- cfuse, on 10/11/2007, -4/+41Free blowjobs for all Google employees!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39Since you're up on that soap box, pick either "dammit" or "damn it," but not "damnit."
- jsayreallen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27I think Google is the only company in the world that millions if not billions of people would flock to without the thought of monopolistic issues. I love my new iPhone, but I pay about $100 a month to at&t. Free would kick the crap out of the iPhone no matter how slick it is.
- BeefBaron, on 10/11/2007, -7/+32Way to miss 'nt on the end of both of those 'could's.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25New wave of script kiddies: "Don't make me turn on my microwave!"
- deto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Google wants wireless Internet to be open, not free. They want the winners of the spectrum bid to be required to allow other people to make money off the access. The spectrum is the people's property, not the governments, and not the winners of the bid. They aren't buying the spectrum, they are buying usage rights. We have the right to limit how the bidder use our resource.
- Lithium19, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22And this is why I love google.
- Mudcrutch, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20The trump card is that if they don't make those requirements google will just create their own network eventually out of their dark fiber network and bury the competition.
- nundeeram, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Although there is no doubt that Google reaches for power often, I feel as though this particular issue seems to ensure that the best producers in this scenario perform the best. Contrast that with the current wireless and telco providers -- because of the closed standard in play today, there can't truly be meaningful competition on a great scale. By requesting these terms, Google is effectively saying "lets see what opening up this spectrum can do for the consumer" -- and if a company can come along and beat us, then so be it. Google is also simply confident that they can take advantage of an open system better than any other company really can, and that is the gamble.
- spider418, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I think they already get that. But I just got an idea for a mashup to extend the benefit to all Google users...
- heavyd14, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Try .15 My rates just got bumped
- StiGUP, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19google is my savor...now if they only had a political team to overthrow bush...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Too bad they're continuously ***** us over.
- phoomp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18For now, they are better than anyone. I worry, though, about giving any company that much power. I fear, eventually, they would all turn out like AT&T once they no longer need to impress customers.
- luckyp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18They'll be giving the free blow jobs....
- biohazd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Yes, but remember that WiMax needs plenty of spectrum (low frequency bands for cramped citys and residential areas, high frequency bands for line-of-sight backhaul connections), and the precious low frequency stuff is regulated (like the 52-69 band being auctioned). The auction specifies who gets the frequency band, not what transmission schema they use, they will switch to WiMax when they have squeezed as much money out of us as they can. Having us still pay for calls by the minute on a packet based network is the biggest scam of the 21st century (so far).
- shortarabguy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16When was it that we thought Google was evil?
I think you're thinking of Microsoft... - KozmoTKramer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17You guys are a tad over zealous. 20 billion should be no prob for Verizon and AT&T
- babydill, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15more like "Google Rules the World"
- jjesusfreak01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Theyre clogging my zeppelins!!!
- radu79, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12It would be great if Google causes FCC to adopt those policies.
But what about the new long distance WiFi thingy? It was supposed to have a range of something like 16KM, and is/was supposed to come soon. If it comes, that might change the Internet as we know it. We could have fast Internet access anywhere in the world, almost. - acidity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Exactly my sentiments.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11they never were
- EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Nobody ever said you have to use it, did they?
You can just use one of the local monopolies instead. - hypher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10That'd be WiMax, and Clearwire has deployed it in several US cities. I have a friend here in Eugene, OR who has it, and its pretty impressive. 1.5mbps down, 256kbps up. Nice and wireless =)
- Garfunkel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9It's a great move, as a previous poster said, not just that Google will buy it (i have so few complaints with them as it is, they are good in themselves), but it will make the internet more open, what it sorely needs.
I hope Google finds success with this. - Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10yes, and I will say that its still better then the old days
- manoftheisland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9just one thought....... what would we do without google to fight for common sense?
- SnOwie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10How about Europe?
- rightofcenter, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11isnt what they are trying to do is leave it open to competiton?
they arent trying to monopolize, but leaving it open to the best possible products services? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11i wonder why your story was not dugg up. because of your ***** HOUSE headline. STFU
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8At some point, you may consider contacting an investment professional. Seems you aren't too skilled with the whole market and risk thing.
- scubasteve377, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Digg is based in America. I appreciate the fact that we can converse with our international friends on Digg, but you have to understand that "the government" here refers to the US government. Just like if I was looking at a UK-based version of Digg, I would not assume that users would be referring to my government when they say "the government." That would just be retarded.
- crazybugger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I am going to tattoo google logo on my chest.
- itseffinkasey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I LOVE YOUR GOOGLE!! We need more good hearted people and companies in this world. I hope Google sets a good example for the rest.
I also I might add that I am against lobbying all together, but I guess for once it might actually turn out to help "the people". Now I hope Google has plans to help net neutrality(I know I'm dreaming), but it needs to be backed by huge companies with lots of money because thats the only thing that matters to our government these days. - KMye, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Well, that makes sense, you know bandwidth is getting more expensive these days... ;)
