- newsmonster, on 07/22/2009, -5/+607I'll believe it when I see it! Sounds like a challenge to the virus creators!
- cabdirazzaq, on 07/20/2009, -22/+434“Two years from now, spam will be solved"- Bill Gates in 2004
- paradisetonight, on 07/20/2009, -8/+374I can't believe someone from google would officially go on record to promise something like this. I can see this backfiring right away because any computer can be hacked. There is no such thing as 100% security.
- mapyqf, on 07/21/2009, -1/+283In other news, the Segway will revolutionize transportation and change the way cities are built forever!
- tobb555, on 07/21/2009, -5/+257Hey apple called they want their smug back.
- Myztry, on 07/21/2009, -7/+229It pretty much is. If you have your email go via Gmail...
- eatporktoo, on 07/20/2009, -5/+176I highly doubt that getting rid of viruses on any platform entirely is possible. Unless they don't allow native code to run on their OS...
- marciot, on 07/21/2009, -3/+173The Titanic was unsinkable, but the iceberg didn't get the memo. Chrome OS is immune to malware, but I bet the malware makers won't get the memo either.
- ECas123, on 07/21/2009, -6/+159Google's going to kill Paris Hilton?
- nbaughman, on 07/21/2009, -3/+133you should turn spam filtering on.
- osteor10, on 07/20/2009, -3/+131and how long will this be beta for?
- MichaelCorleone, on 07/21/2009, -9/+106Is it wrong that I believe Google can back up their promises better than my government?
- eliot2000, on 07/20/2009, -1/+89Only our decedents will know.
- Wreckage, on 07/21/2009, -4/+86Same claim Apple makes. It's a very easy claim to make when you are not a target. If Chrome or Mac were 80% of the market they would face a much, much, much larger challenge.
It's like an old, fat, hairy guy saying he's "immune to sexual assault".
Either way, I will try Chrome out. - NeoTechni, on 07/21/2009, -0/+77I've had 2 spam emails since I switched to Gmail. And I've switched like 6 years ago.
I consider that solved
"At the cost of being data mined....."
Oh no, targeted ads, whatever shall I do? - MattBD, on 07/20/2009, -4/+79By using a package manager, it's possible to minimize the need to download software from untrustworthy sources. Package management is one of the great things about Linux - it sounds hard, but it's just different, and once you get used to it it's generally a lot less hassle than the methods of installing software used on Windows or Mac as it's generally quicker (you only download what you need, so a download doesn't come bundled with a load of dependencies), it's more convenient for updating as by running the update manager you update everything in one go rather than have something pop up and say "New version!" at the worst possible time, and most package managers can resolve dependencies themselves.
- smitas, on 07/20/2009, -5/+74That will be very nice
- Maynym, on 07/21/2009, -1/+66I don't think you have a girlfriend. Enjoy your palm.
- homercles337, on 07/21/2009, -1/+60Thats odd, i havent dealt with a virus, trojan, or malware for years. I think my Windows box does just fine at seeing the "end of viruses." Viruses are nothing more than PEBKAC.
- justdru, on 07/21/2009, -1/+52That's a pretty bold statement.
- shiftkgb, on 07/21/2009, -1/+51They didn't? I could have sworn they at least changed the way fat mall cops go about their business.
- Bloodwine, on 07/21/2009, -5/+53while I have never personally been a victim to a virus while running FreeBSD, SuSE, RHEL, or Ubuntu, I have read about systems being compromised with rootkits.
While a rootkit is not a virus, it sure as hell is a security issue. - DaviDTC, on 07/21/2009, -1/+48Except in this case they got the memo and see it as a challenge. Perhaps that iceberg got the memo too.
- Nysul, on 07/21/2009, -5/+52In Outlook I don't have a single spam message in my inbox and no false positives in my junk folder. I'm sorry you have such ***** email.
- iEATcatFOOD, on 07/21/2009, -3/+46You say that like you're one of them.
- archaist, on 07/21/2009, -0/+43dugg for analogy
- Spamorama, on 07/21/2009, -3/+45I'm a google fanboy but.... /facepalm
- Yelnik, on 07/21/2009, -4/+45This is just a dream. There are probably self taught hackers/programmers out there that will know more than every person on the Chrome OS team put together. As long as the internet, software, games, etc exist, there will always be people to break them. No exceptions.
- MWeather, on 07/21/2009, -5/+45You know what's funny about you saying Linux is obscure and unpopular? The fact that you did it on a Linux server.
- supersayanyoda, on 07/21/2009, -1/+38if you stop registering to porn sites your problem would be solved...
- magamiako, on 07/21/2009, -2/+39And if Microsoft ran their own package management everyone would go kicking and screaming wondering why "MS" needs to know so much about their computers and the software they use.
P.S. Package management isn't entirely safe from flaws.

While the signing key was never compromised, there may be other flaws in one's implementation that can be worked around. - FKnight, on 07/21/2009, -2/+35@homercles337:
Wrong. You're on Digg, buddy. It's like this:
On a Mac, malware is the user's fault.
On Linux, rootkits are the user's fault.
On Windows, malware is Bill Gates' fault.
Obviously, you didn't attend the Digg Group Think sessions. Expect a knock at your door. - NeoTechni, on 07/21/2009, -0/+32No, it was italicized.
- revslaughter, on 07/21/2009, -3/+34Well, if they're planning on implementing Unix architecture & filesystems then...uh, yeah it'd be pretty hard to get virii / spyware on it. Google's just listing a benefit of Linux/Unix without using the actual words. I don't mind, but it really boggles the mind of a Windows user when people who use Linux/Unix say stuff like this. I never have to worry about defragmenting, spyware, or virii. That doesn't mean it can't happen, but the fact that there have been...what, two viruses for Linux and a handful for OSX doesn't mean I need to go and install some third-party software like Norton or Ad Aware to do jobs that any OS worth its salt ought to do on its own implicitly.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+31A crazy guy on the street has a better chance of seeing his promises come to fruition than most governments.
- wonderchemist, on 07/20/2009, -3/+31What happens when adsense banners is the (unwanted)ware?
- MWeather, on 07/21/2009, -2/+30How did you get your NTFS to not fragment? I'd patent it before Microsoft figures it out.
- GaltShrugged, on 07/20/2009, -16/+43Not possible unless you lock down the system into an unfriendly state.
- Bloodwine, on 07/21/2009, -1/+28What about USB drives? You have to ban those too.
- Carinix, on 07/21/2009, -8/+34End of Malware, not end of security issues entirely.
- bewareofthecow, on 07/21/2009, -2/+28Doesn't matter how secure your OS is, users will still find a way to install malware; even if they have to get through a detailed 12 step process to install it. The biggest vulnerability to any OS is the idiot using it.
- TrellSaracen, on 07/21/2009, -1/+26He is, that's why he's rubbing it all over his face.
- nbaughman, on 07/21/2009, -0/+23if we could only be so lucky
- MrJagil, on 07/21/2009, -0/+22Pow! Right in the kisser!
Or vagina... or wherever her viruses stem from. - Maynym, on 07/21/2009, -0/+22I'm Feeling Lucky!
- homercles337, on 07/21/2009, -1/+22PEBKAC? Problem exists between the keyboard and chair. Do you not have Google in your far away land?
- tomjm5000, on 07/21/2009, -2/+23Also, it's "viruses" not "virii", O God of Linux
- Louis11, on 07/21/2009, -0/+21And what about the person with physical access to the machine? Or someone on your LAN (not the same as the internet or Wifi)
Local privilege escalation comes to mind . . .
Regardless of if you are disconnected from the internet, you are still not 100% secure ;) - joebaloney, on 07/21/2009, -1/+20malware.html
