I might be able to translate a majority of something said, but often someone uses a few words I'm not familiar with. Drop the whole thing into a translator and it's much easier to figure out.
But once I read the translated portion, I often laugh at how awkward it comes out. The tendency to write with slang or without capitalization makes this even more valuable. - se7en11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Why? Because you have a penpal? *ducks*
- terasurfer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It sounds good in theory, but can't you expect that most of the people using the translation don't know what the correct translation is? Sure, it could help in cases where the result simply is not grammatically 'natural' in the target language, but I think it could cause problems unless you have users who are fluent to both languages.

thats mostly people who translated it in google w/o checking their mistake

- obezyana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, i know some people in the learn_russian community on LiveJournal recently had some fun with the Russian version of Google translate… and i think it could be safely assumed that even the beginners there know that "*****" should not translate to "Да."
So people who know some stuff, but need a translator for the rest, might be able to help with this… but "experts?" which brings up way less results. - staffell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4A girl I met in Spain used to send me letters translated into English with the use of Babelfish and some of the literal translations were hilarious.
One of my favourite was 'te hecho mucho de menos' which, in spanish means 'i miss you lots' (or something similar). I mean, do you realize how many HSers will now be able to BETTER cheat the system by copy/pasting words, lines, paragraphs, and EVEN full essays into online translators in order to shirk the actual work aspect of learning to conjugate and translate stuff? - tknd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0cgruber's point dougsnell is that the people who fully understand and can provide the >best translation< often to do not need to use the service at all. So at best you'll have half-assed attempts at translations that could probably be wrong as well.
Also, there are many cases (slang, poetry, lyrics, proverbs, cultural background, etc) where missing one word could probably give you the wrong translation-even if you translated by word, you'd still get the wrong translation because you do not have the cultural context. So for example when I say "***** hits the wall" I probably don't mean that there is feces physically attacking a wall.
Now in the very beginning I emphasized >best translation< because there are also many disagreements among fluents speakers and some things that are very hard to translate. - Render, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Ok, now how do I access this tool :/
