- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Where did that come from?
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25For a company that is one of the world's leaders in orginizing information, it's amazing that it took them this long to sort out their own help system.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@npinski:
And why SHOULDNT a dictionary explain how it is laid out and how to use it? Why SHOULDNT windows explain how to use it on the most fundamental level.
These tutorials should not be mandatory, but if you've ever seen a newbie, or elderly person, try to use a computer.... explaining that the mouse movement on the desk moves the cursor on the screen is highly valuable to them. - JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11(I meant the post, not the information. It seems a little "out of left field".)
- npinski, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10In fairness to google, providing "Help" for their searches is like Webster's dictionary providing a "Help" chapter at the start telling you how to look up a word, or Windows booting up with an optional tutorial of how to use a mouse, and what that clickity-thing in front of you with letters on it is.
Search on the internet - ESPECIALLY search on google - is ubiquitous. All the information they finally collated was always available somewhere else, but they didn't need to provide it in a way like they do now because the need wasn't there. - DiggidtyDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6True story:
freind:How do I find __?
me:Look it up on Google.
*freind goes to Google page*
friend: now what?
me*sigh* - mightysquid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It says it's help for all products, not just search.
Considering how many pots google has a finger in it's a good idea IMHO. - vgcf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why would anyone need help using Google anyway?
- npinski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Because if you don't know how to use a dictionary, ask a friend or parent. Don't ask Webster to waste paper on instructions that only you and 3 other people will need.
If you don't know how to use a mouse in the 21st century, again, ask a friend or relative. Don't ask Microsoft to waste programmer time and data storage space on instructions that only you and 3 other people will need.
Googling has become as ubiqutous as looking something up in a dictionary or using a mouse. I'm not saying they don't need a help system at all. But criticizing them for not having one to BEGIN with (which is why i made the comment - based on JeremyBanks's comment) is ludicruous. - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OMG!!!111!111!!!SHIFT+1!!!!
GOOGLE HELP!
I THINK I CREAMED MY PANTS...
Seriously, I love Google more then anyone, but I was kind of dissapointed when I found out thats all it is. I was hoping it was something like AllExperts or another one of those expert-exchange type websites. - superrcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You...can't...search Google Help. Nice.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"And why SHOULDNT a dictionary explain how it is laid out and how to use it?"
Most do
"Why SHOULDNT windows explain how to use it on the most fundamental level."
Press F1
npinski probably never uses the former nor the latter. Probably thinks you can guess everything :-) - ImJasonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Technically, the link is just http://www.google.com/support -- the rest of that is just (I assume) clickthrough tracking and language options
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Direct link: http://www.google.com/support?ctx=blog&hl=en
Don't link to unofficial blo.... oh, wait. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is dumb. All of this information was already available on Google. Now it's just listed on one page. Whoopty doo. The support is still complete *****.
I've been trying to talk to SOMEONE at Google for 2 weeks and haven't gotten a peep out of them. I used the livechat with my adwords account and was given a phone number. I called the phone number up and recieved this: "We're sorry. Google currently does not offer phone support, but you can get help at http://www.google.com/". That's helpful. - lobsterboyblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone else find it odd that there's no option to search all of the Google services' help pages? You'd think that would have been their first priority, instead of just a collection of links.
- ImJasonH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There's also a nice A-Z version:
http://www.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=alpha_index.html - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1will that put http://www.googleguide.com/ out of business?
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^ But you have to pay for that. I'm talking about a community driven one.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.google.com/search?q=freind
Did you mean: friend
True result. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Simple question, I searched, it's bugged me a while:
In gtalk, how do I add people to a message I have already started? If I've started the message, I cannot get to my contacts without saving the message. I can type in their address in the to field manually, but that means I have to remember what their address starts with.
Any ideas? I must be missing something. and yes I know about starting in contacts themselves. - Jhary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google never ceases to amaze me. Yes, I have needed help on Google, but not frequently.
I was more impressed with Writerly, linked off of Help under new "New Products." Rock on, Google. - Jetboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They allready have that...
http://answers.google.com/answers/ - Lemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Certain smileys are recognized by Google Talk and will be shown in blue.
:-| :-O :-x :-P :-D ;-) :-( :-) B-) :'( :| :O :x :P :D :) :( :)
To write text in bold, put it between *asteriks*
To write text in italic, put it between _underscores_
OK, answered my own question... - Lemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I saw a list of GTALK smilies online somewhere but I can't see them now... anyone got a link? Not in the help page. Also...
SHIFT+ENTER gives you a carriage return (new line) without entering your message.
*your text* - enclosing asterisks will make your text BOLD
I haven't figured out any others... - Kikineko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow it's not in beta.
- kaytrio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You're right! I don't understand why Google would release products without a search feature. I mean, that's what they're known for! Even google spreadsheets lacks a search.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Damn you for ruining my joke!! :(
- npinski, on 10/12/2007, -29/+9BOOBIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -37/+4"How do I turn the mature content filter off?
Underneath the image search box on the search results page, there is a link to turn off the mature content filter. By clicking on it, users can toggle the filter on and off. Once the mature content filter is turned off, it stays off for the rest of the session and will remain off on the next visit to Google's Image Search. "
