- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18I have been using their 411 service the past year, it's free and I don't rack up the crazy charges verizon hits you with every time you call 411.
- crispee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8A) Google does not have a monopoly.
B) Google makes good products that meet customer needs.
C) Ads suck because they are NOT Personalized. If you could get ads for things you like (E.g. wouldn't you sign up for a service that gives you coupons for products you usually buy instead of instead of having to pour through a list of 100 products to find the 6 you care about in the newspaper?)
D) Where as Microsoft only talks about providing an "integrated" experience, google actually does this and then opens up your and their data for your other services to use as well. - Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Google gulp?
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If google can create something that works as well as windows mobile in use and development that works on any OS, they will crush microsoft.
- RetroRufio, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Borg?
- virtualball, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Pshh....don't attach me to this. I have mixed feelings, for one, I would like Google to have an OS for a phone because it would be intuitive and connect with all of the Google tools. The reason I don't want one is because I'm still lying to myself about my iPhone purchase, I can't see anything better for cheaper! Not yet at least!
/me hugs his iPhone and says "I swear I love you...I swear...." :( - JoeDonH, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't use 411 very often, but I had Goog411 programed into my phone from back when I first found out about it. Less than a week ago I used it for the first time and I was very, very impressed with the results. I haven't done any "general" searches (e.g., "Pizza delivery, so-and-so area, some town"), so I'm not sure about the accuracy/convenience of that feature, but it sure as hell got the number for a business I was looking for as the first result.
Incorporate convenient functions like that into a phone with Gmail, Maps, Search, along with integration with enterprise software and I'll have to convince my company's IT Manager to get us off of Crackberry's pipe. - 12340987, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8it seems more and more like every phone will be a google phone with google developing an OS.
- Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've been using their text messaging search service for quite a while as well... I didn't realize until just now they've got at least 3 specific mobile services to integrate into this, plus maps, so this could definitely be cooler than I realized.
- mjk78, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4People don't mind Google because they don't charge anything to the average consumers. People hate companies that make money by taking it from them. Ex: oil companies. If they start selling products you might see some hate start to build up though.
' - SpacemanSpiff01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4so this is the google os..
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Is this going to be like the GoogleOS that people have been talking about being released for the past 3 years? I'd hold off on getting excited until an official statement is made.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Who said *anything* about the two partnering up?
- mdoom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Man, soon I'll have to be visiting the Super Google down the road instead of the Super Walmart
- Wang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1LOL, you are giving google way too much credit my friend...
- rancid1456, on 10/10/2007, -8/+9we will be looking forward to this
- Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If anything it'll be a mobile phone provider, or several for that matter customizing hardware for the software, but I doubt Google will be at all directly involved on the hardware side. (This of course doesn't mean that it wouldn't still be a "Goog Phone" (the gPhone trademark is taken)...
Really, staying on the software side, and opening up use is a pretty smart move, they still "focus on search" as they've stated they would do before, they don't actually directly compete with the iPhone, they could profit from several competing companies, they could claim to bring about a "new phone paradigm", and they don't have to ever actually hire people that specialize in mobile hardware to consult with any manufacturer. - specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1^Awesome!
Ha, I'm actually beginning to believe in that Epic movie. - goliath1333, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4What's the deal with the royal we? "We" won't be doing anything..."you" might.
- horizontaleight, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6I think I hate you. But you made me laugh...
- jgzman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Made a huge pile of money?
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that's not why people hate companies. people hate corporations that are unethical. google has proven to be a very responsible corporate entity, and have actually done many things to improve the world we live in and protect the average user, such as fight the government's attempts to look at user data recorded on their servers, fight for net neutrality, started the Google Foundation, and started Google Book Search/Google Print Library Project to digitize all published works and put them online for easy searching and accessing.
their attitude and corporate culture are just more progressive than the average corporation. - Wang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It provides nothing new in an already flooded market of IM networks/clients. This is what companies like google need to avoid.
- abhiroop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Lets say TOMORROW they start charging for search, and mail...what do you think would happen? I'd imagine ALL major corporations would sign up with them (for at least the search part). I for one would most likely pay for my gmail account.
- iofthestorm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, I think it would be safe to say that google has a monopoly on the (good) search engine business. Or at least mindshare in the general public. No one says "Let me Yahoo! that" or "Let me MS Live Search that."
- brownspank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Google Steaks.
- Idiocy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2ಠ_ಠ
- gr4yscale, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1you'll like that phone. I own it. Just get rid of cingulars ***** OS and go to xda-developers.com and find a better, cooked rom.
- answer42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I dont know, I'm getting rid of mine. Its slow and has a terrible memory leak. And its super bulky.
Yes I have gone to xda, I'm actually on my fourth rom (LVSW) and they all suck. - nullcodes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I just hope any phone they come out with has at least an 800 pixel width minimum. That's really the minimum for comfortable web browsing while waiting at the dentists office or while riding the subway.
- Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Such a powerhouse, but they've yet to actually do much of anything.. Ads, search, and mail... What else do they really have of note?...
- virtualball, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Agreed, Google has yet to do anything in the REAL world, all they've done is make a search engine, ads, mail, maps, etc. I think it'll be a HUGE risk if they hit the ground running with their own phone...
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2At what point will people turn against Google? They're slowly becoming even more of a superpowerhouse, and few people seem to even think of it as a problem.
- cappslite, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Rumor speculates that Google will acquire Alltel soon.
- nullcodes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Isn't the Google CEO -Eric Schmidt on Apple's board? So why isn't there some sort of conflict of interest - after all he may have gotten to see what features either of the phones have. I guess it's ok as long as he doesnt communicate to one what the other is doing .. but I think that would be really hard to refrain from doing subconciously. I suppose if most/all shareholders of both companies are have said OK to that it's not a prob.
- lukeev, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0gTalk is excellent, just because people don't use it doesn't mean it's not great quality. It's light and simple.
- Wang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Google should stick to what they do best. Microsoft often makes the mistake of trying to get a piece of every single pie....Google shouldn't make the same mistake, as it often just ends up with lots of mediocre offerings (Gtalk anyone?)
- motang, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Well hopefully we will get some solid information on this one.
- aydoubleyou, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2So theres some slight confirmation on a Google OS. Not official yet of course, but promising.
Now the question for Google is... will there be a Google Phone to accompany this Google OS? I believe so, and I doubt HTC will make it because of their close ties with Microsoft, so who will it be? - horizontaleight, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Also rumors that HTC (and potentially Samsung) is on board as a manufacturer.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Why is everyone so excited about this, when most of you have already denounced Windows Vista because of it's "big brother" style of monitoring you? What in the hell do you think Google is going to do? Their entire business is built upon showing people ads and recording your personal information and preferences.
I guess if they continue to do it with a smile on their face though, most of you will just ignore the huge stick they have hidden behind their back. - SpacemanSpiff01, on 10/10/2007, -10/+8iPhone
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Would have been nice if they would have said this yesterday. I just ordered an ATT8525... but at $170 and no contract, I couldn't complain....
But now THIS! Google, you're starting to tee me off! - JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3I know insulting Google is akeen to insulting Apple on Digg, but how many times did they deny working on a phone only to have been lying all this time.. Bad Google! That's evil! ;-)
- cwcentral, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1With Google partnering with Apple, I don't see an OS, but I do see some Google desktop client or browser than delivers Google stuff as a service. And the Google phone **will be the iPhone (3G+Wifi version hopefully)**. On a mobile device, you can call it an OS (since most devices are single-tasking-based hardware NOT a desktop environment!), but it's not technically an OS.
It would be irrational to create another OS since Google is mainly a internet service (software as a service). You can easily make a mobile app "appear" like an OS...
Having a fat client on the iPhone would fits nicely since it likely would be compatible with hardware from openmoko and such. - fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -11/+2Or not. Yawn. . .
