- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34God bless Google for giving away works freely available in the public domain?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Ok, from now on no more saying something is a dupe. If it is a dupe and you feel like being a prick then at least link it. If it is a dupe of a non front page story then Don't say its a dupe! Most diggers only read front page stories anyway. Geesh.
- dr-steve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Anyone ever hear of Project Gutenberg? http://www.gutenberg.org, if you have the chance to stop by.
Nineteen THOUSAND free books, and counting.
Over thirty YEARS of providing free public domain text.
The only thing missing is the cachet of being Google.
-Steve - vvvv, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Big deal, the pirate bay gives away free book downloads 365 days a year, 366 during leap years.
- ProximaC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Well, to be fair, they were offline for a few days after the raid...
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Straight to the scary stories: http://books.google.com/googlebooks/scarystories/
- goblindegook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9There is a "duplicate story" option in the drop down button. Use it and stop wasting comment space.
Also, am I alone wishing digg had a book section? - goblindegook, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yeah, if only there was a place on the interwebs for books that fall in the public domain. I'd call it Project Gutenberg and host it at www.gutenberg.org. I know it sounds outrageous, but a man can dream . . .
- Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10if they are freely available in the public domain but nobody provides a place for you to gain access to them then what good is the "public domain"?
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Damn commas!
- aburd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like the Google interface a lot better. Being able to see the old fonts as well as being able to keep up with which page I'm on (in case I don't read the entire book in one sitting) is really nice. Plus the books are hosted on Google's servers so they don't require multiple mirror links.
I appreciate the effort that gutenberg.org has made, but Google's product is a lot slicker. It would be disingenuous not to recognize that. - Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5so couldn't the same sarcastic remark be said about gutenberg.org?
"God bless gutenberg.org for giving away works freely available in the public domain?" - skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't believe me?
http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC11724131&id=xZHv4CWgWaEC&pg=PP3&dq=Robert+Louis+Stevenson+dr.+jekyll&as_brr=1 - Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4not that it matters but where is it that google is giving themselves "back-pats"?
Some project manager blogged about it... wow that's almost like they threw themselves a parade.
Even if they did, who cares. It still means another avenue for us to gain access to the works. Let them take an ad out in the New York Times about it for all I care. I don't have any silly hangups about a site being "humble" for the good things it does. Maybe Gutenberg.org should do the same and more people would know about them. - bishonen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Has anyone actualy found one of these "download" links?
Cuz either im too stupid or I am not looking in the right places... - skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lol, the fourth page of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde has a had on it, and then 5 pages of blank space after it.
- goblindegook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lovecraft's copyright status is a murky issue, which is probably why they avoided touching him. Here are some other public domain alternatives not listed at Google's site:
MR James: http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/j#a2768
WC Morrow: http://www.horrormasters.com/Themes/Morrow.htm - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2and for christmas it will probably be domain names and for new year its going to be small islands in the middle of the pacific. Where will this all stop? Told ya Google = Skynet .
- feelingfunky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1haven't found one yet
I don't think any of them are free - trigger0219, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3uhh,... no HP Lovecraft?
- AgentofId, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Claymore, well.. it _could_, sure. But it would be out of place since Project Gutenberg doesn't give itself back-pats like google is aught to do. See the difference?
- Sway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Skynet is my boyfriend.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow. Google's giving away free books. Free books that are easily available in multiple formats from many other sites.
You've got to be a real Googlewhore to actually give them credit for ***** like this. - duality, on 10/12/2007, -22/+12When declaring that a submission is a dupe, please provide a link to the original submission. It's not a dupe until you perform this simple task.
