- sbcea, on 09/05/2008, -3/+48I don't know why anyone is shocked over this revelation. What business is not in it to win it? Google happens to have the money and power to be on top of the game right now. Someday they'll be toppled by another and then that one will be the 'evil empire' we'll all write about. Circle of life .... circle of life.
- KragTheDigger, on 09/05/2008, -2/+36"One thing is obvious that Google is trying to Kill Other People's Business" .... it's called competition.
- erichw1504, on 09/05/2008, -3/+30Dugg for finishing title.
- mohsenxp, on 09/05/2008, -1/+21Competition is good. It drives businesses and entrepreneurs,
No competition is the worst thing for a consumer. - Aurabolt, on 09/05/2008, -1/+20Wow until I read a different comment I thought this "e" was IE's icon o_O
- postvivace, on 09/05/2008, -1/+19firefox and safari are just too much competition... and also you have to factor in people's motivation to take the time/energy to make the switch. For something like this Google needs to make the Chrom not just a little better, but a lot better.
- stealthc, on 09/05/2008, -0/+17I sent the error report to Microsoft. Hopefully they can fix it?
- bagpulistu, on 09/05/2008, -0/+16Mozilla is promoting AdBlock Plus and over 90% of Google's revenue comes from ads, so launching a browser aimed at competing with IE and expecially Firefox, makes a lot of sense.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+14Wait, this isn't an article about Chrom, the god worshiped by Conan?
I'm in the wrong place. =Leaves= - missingnoh4x, on 09/05/2008, -2/+15It's open source, and they've stated all of the methodologies that make Chrome faster, safer, etc. If anything that simply helps all browser developers improve their products. And that helps Google, since their main business is stuff that runs within any browser.
- boxxa, on 09/05/2008, -1/+14Google is just guaranteeing access to their business.
They relied on Microsoft's browser (who also has a competing product to google search) to pretty much give users access to Google, now they cut out the middle man and control not only the service but have a way to better enhance the user software it uses to access their service. - Hixz, on 09/05/2008, -3/+14"One thing is obvious that Google is trying to Kill Other People's Business"
I don't mean to sound too simplistic here but isn't that the goal of a business? - kss42, on 09/05/2008, -3/+14CHROM NOM NOM NOM
NOMNIBAR - YodaJones, on 09/05/2008, -0/+8I would also make a browser if I was Google. Just makes sense. They have a lot of "products" just like Microsoft, why shouldn't they make a browser that works in their interest?
- mCanada, on 09/05/2008, -0/+8No one gives two flying ***** which browser you post from
- posted from Mosaic. - hasslinthehoff, on 09/05/2008, -4/+11The key difference between Google and Microsoft is that Google actually innovates. Microsoft's entire history is nothing but co-opting other people's technologies and making it worse for general consumption. That's why Chrome right out of the gate is still 10 times faster and has 10 times less bugs than Explorer ever will.
- BXRWXR, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7Is that like a rotten easter egg or what.
- stealthc, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7This is nothing but GOOD for the Internet. If Chrome is Open Source, then it adds to the population of OSS browsers. The more browsers there are that are OSS, the more pressure is on closed-source browsers to open, or depart from the market.
The only business Google is destroying here is the Microsoft model of lock-in. - Phearce, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7One thing is Obvious: Your Shift key is Strobing.
- brettg102, on 09/05/2008, -1/+8Chrome is fast as hell...but for some reason some flash content severly ***** it. Firefox till it's fixed.
- ffingers, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6Maybe I am wrong, but I read the release as being "defensive" such that IE is incapable, or would act as a roadblock for Internet platform progress. Meaning, it is not up to the task of future Internet based platforms. Therefore, to ensure that Google can continually develop and bring newer tech into the internet based platform arena, they wanted to make sure that there was a browser capable of supporting this.
Now, granted, I am sure FF could handle this, but FF has only what 18%. Although FF is gaining momentum, the push Google can give to something like Chrome will far exceed Mozilla's ability to push out FF. I am looking at it as a move to ensure their future viability without relying on Mozilla (which doesn't have the marketing resources of google) to cut into IE's base.
I am sure there are more "evil" motives as well, but if I am reading this right, their reasoning sounds logical to release chrome to ensure future development can take place. - Wargasmic, on 09/05/2008, -2/+8Safari isn't lol. It's a piece of *****.
- missingnoh4x, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6So wait, what's so defensive about it? I don't quite see what they're getting at.
- Gudeldar, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5The thing I don't understand is why doesn't Google just promote Firefox? It is already open source so no difference with Chrome there and Google is already paying the Mozilla Corporation 10s of millions of dollars to be the default homepage / search engine in Firefox and just extended their deal for another 3 years.
- Aurabolt, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Exactly, just look at EA Sports / Madden series since 2006... or the gasoline industry (we have no alternatives to gasoline right now)
- inigomntoya, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Its just a stupid article to make Google look bad. All companies should be putting up defenses of some sort. No company wants to have their market share taken away from them.
- mentaldingo, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Dugg for pointless digging.
- Lionhart, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6I wouldn't call releasing a browser as trying to kill Mozilla or Internet Explorer. We live in a world driven by competition, where products are made better by other products they are pitted against. Personally, if Chrome is better than Firefox, I will use it. And either way, Firefox will be made better by the competition Chrome provides. When products compete the consumers win.
- se7en11, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5FYI: 85% of Mozilla's revenue comes from Google. It's a strange strange love triangle going on.
- SPThom, on 09/05/2008, -2/+7Don't be a sensationalist.
Competition is BY FAR the best thing that's happened to the browser industry in the past few years.
When Chrome has 98% market share and you see Google trying to squash the last 2%, then you can talk about killing businesses. Right now, they're just trying to stake their claim, and they've got ground to stand on for doing so--in most of the cases you mentioned, Google's products were either more innovative (Gmail) or leaner, cleaner, and easier to use (Google Talk) than those competitors. - inigomntoya, on 09/05/2008, -2/+6You, sir, are a douche bag. Congratulations.
- bagboyrebel, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4you can't exactly remove it from open source. You can change the licesne and release a non-open source version, but the open source version will still be out there and there is nothing stopping another team from taking it over if need be.
- arjie, on 09/05/2008, -1/+5Man, I don't know. I couldn't care less if they kill other businesses legit, GMail is miles ahead of Yahoo Mail for me. I just love it. Google Checkout, I dunno, seems dead in the water. And I don't know how many Firefox users will shift to Chrome, very few are. It seems more like a technology demonstrator.
- pentalive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4Whoa! Dude! Chrome crashed.
- jamesk256, on 09/05/2008, -2/+6It's tough, on one hand google makes my life sooo much easier. My igoogle account is one of the first things i look at everyday. It comes down to a question of integrity, are they willing to truly make their products open source or is it just a ploy to completely dominate every element of our web experience?
Chrome is open source currently, theoretically enabling small and medium sized developers to improve the functionality and give rise to additional applications. As long as things stay open source I'm willing to stay on the google band wagon. Unfortunately with no mac release currently available, i'm unable to test drive and give a true opinion. A few friends working in SEO say it is incredible, truly a web users web browser.
Anything that is a direct competitor to microsoft is ok by me. I'm sure google will be in court defending themselves a few years from now. - inigomntoya, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Google left Mozilla and went their own way because of Webkit, V8, and Googlegears. With those three things integrated into a single browser, it makes their web apps much more powerful.
- gordigor, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Why is he douche? It seems like he found a legitimate bug in the beta software. BTW it crashes Chrome.
- Elfman9, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3It will only be a matter of time until AB Plus comes out with a Chrome version. Then where will Google be?
- Atomic1fire, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3as far as I know they have not left mozilla, they just enacted that new deal right before they released chrome, its called playing two sides
If Microsoft does something drastic and anti competitive
Google wants to make sure there are enough people using other browsers to keep microsoft from winning
not only that, but it will help google by making standards mainstream, as more people will develop for chrome, and then be more firefox/opera/safari compatible. - FeloniusMonkey, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3"It's lonely at the top."
"Everyone loves an underdog." - erichw1504, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Dugg for digging about pointless digging
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Um.... duh? Any browser is trying to take out IE. The only exceptions really are specialty browsers such as Flock.
- TheXuu, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3not to mention the Acid3 test... wow.
- Flare, on 09/05/2008, -2/+5Why is it that nobody is commenting on the retarded typo "Chrom" on this submission? What, suddenly Digg users learned to respect each other?
Chrom.... ***** stupid mistake. - santaliqueur, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4Care to tell us what it does?
- prideful, on 09/05/2008, -5/+8Type :% into the Google Chrome address bar.
- cparker, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Dugg. I lol'd.
- SarahC, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2They say the stats are mostly from their log files - and people who visit are programmers, more than likely going to be using non-IE browsers
"(The statistics above are extracted from W3Schools' log-files, but we are also monitoring other sources around the Internet to assure the quality of these figures)." - v4vishal, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2I have a feeling (and I might be wrong) that Google is purposefully delaying the launch of mac and linux versions of Chrome. All it wants is to gain market share for Chrome at the expense of IE which is dominant in Windows segment.
