- peve00, on 10/11/2007, -2/+70dammit... why cant i get bought by google...
- arunforce, on 10/11/2007, -13/+62So when do we start worrying?
- dotdan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+41At first I thought they'd purchased the Grand Central in NYC, and I really did start to worry.
- kodek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+39Imagine being able to forward calls to Gtalk.
- cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28I'm sorry... is Microsoft just sleeping? Why aren't THEY trying to make our lives easier? I mean seriously. WTF? If Google didn't exist, who the Hell would be innovating? Who'd be giving us more mail box space? Yahoo? Who'd have their chat client work over the web via Ajax? MSN? AOL? I mean, Live is nice and all, but aside from trying to out-Google Google, where are the fresh new ideas? Would Microsoft be putting a web version of Office online if Google Office wasn't improving daily?
I mean, Google just copied a9's "Street View", but only after a9 gave it up. Awkward... Google's just cruising along on a mission from God. - newbill123, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25You've got to get Google's attention before they can buy you... try hanging out on different street corners.
- Kavok, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Why is this a bad thing though? As long as a company doesn't completely ruin a good idea then its a good thing. :)
- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -12/+29Makes me wonder what this means for privacy/data rentention of my voice mails now.
- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Honestly, if you're that paranoid, then don't use the service.
- smurf22, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21Google buys it then makes it better whats the problem with that?
- LethalAmbition, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14The internet should be renamed "Google."
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Gee I wonder where all that dark fiber they purchased is going.
- mal1964, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10The two founders of Grandcentral, were former Yahoo guys,
- demizer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Google is becoming a 400lb gorilla.
I know i use it about 100 times a day. Google is taking over EVERY digital communication facility one by one, eventually it is going to turn into a monopoly. - molecool, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Not sure how I feel about this - really liked GrandCentral - who knows what Google has in mind for that product (and how to use my call record). I just don't like Google to be aware of EVERYTHING I do online, that's all.
- livevil, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Google = "power overwhelming"
- merr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I can invite a few.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Let me tell you guys something. If the FBI wants to look over your phone records. Your already *****!
- afx1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10because you decrease people's productivity. sorry the numbers don't lie.
- aquadoctorbob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Eh, if it were any other company acting like this, sure. But Google?
- jhop, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Is it a coincidence that I just received an email from GrandCentral saying I can no longer upload custom ring tones? I think not.
- tdlrali, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10STFU, noob.
Google does offer great services, name one other company that even gets close. Yahoo? Haha, good one...
I agree that fanboyism is annoying, but ANTI-fanboyism is even worse. Go spam some other story. - kodek, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12Oh noes! Google might make it better! Run!!!
- dbarefoot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You Americans are keeping all the cool phone stuff from us. First the iPhone, then GrandCentral. Soon you're going to come up here and take our rotary dials away.
- thecompkid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6When they buy Microsoft, it's already way too late.
That being said, I, for one, welcome our new all-encompassing computer overlords. - danwallace, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7What's the opposite of a fanboy? You know, like, someone who will bitch and moan about everything a company does despite the potential for awesomeness? Can we put up like, a couple dozen of those alerts too?
- bluegene, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13groovy baby
- Proggie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8more proof that google is really CIA :)
when is it coming to Canada?? could really use something like this - modelcadet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Photosynth and Seadragon are really cool (though they didn't develop them).
MS's Surface has some unique innovation (apart from Han and others' work; Jobs fanboys, don't even start).
That's about it...
I love hearing Gates/Jobs talk about their visions of the future. Then watch Google actually do something about it (and have a much more accurate vision of the future, to boot!) - CrazedGeek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I have 4 invites left, if you want one just reply with your email and I'll send you one.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Eric Schmidt isn't a Google founder.
- BaconBits, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Youmail.com is another free online/offline voicemail that works with your existing phone number. Customizable greetings, ditch certain callers, and you can still check everything from your existing phone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well at the moment they really do seem to be just turning into another Microsoft, and that isn't good for anyone!
- roflcawpter, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11I for one welcome our new search engine overlords.
Beats the hell out of unauthorized NSA wiretapping... - ArthurSucks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Generally, Google makes it better than before. No so typical.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6So long as they don't turn into another Corel, and utterly ***** up every single thing they buy!
I miss you Paint Shop Pro :( - szembek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Please provide some reasoning for concern. I see no reason for concern myself. All I see is a bunch of "OMG GOOGLE INVASION PRIVACY!@" every time Google does anything.
- tru2life, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4No, in the FAQ they say the users won't be able t upload their own.......another mini utube copyright issue in the making if they didn't change that with new very deep pockets.
- pyrotherm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yes, it is, now that they are on the RIAA radar, they can't afford to get the pants sued off of them for streaming copyrighted material without a license. I sent them a letter urging them to consider a disclaimer or something, so they can shuffle the responsibility of copyright infringement onto the individual users, or possibly add a software feature that cuts the mp3s down to a certain time length to get around the law
- crushfan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Google > Apple
- yunus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Tell that to the Open Office folks, or the large percentage of linux users on Digg.
- pr0t0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They also took out the covert call recording. It now states something like "This call is being recorded" to both parties during the call. I liked the idea of being able to do that without the other party knowing...wiretapping laws be damned!
Hey, it works for Bush / Cheney! - Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Good job at completely missing the point
- simplenation, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4hopefully they will offer this service for free to all of us
- Speed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Was Grand Central an invite only thing before Google bought them, or is it just another Google "Beta" thing?
- modelcadet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3See, here's the thing. For any large business, high risk investment is almost never worth it. From google's perspective: Why waste as much time/money doing basic research and development when we can buy the human resources of new products that have demonstrated a more secure rate of return. The Intels of the world will never buy the D-Waves until they've shown proof of concept. Part of the thing about google is that, as a company, they are supportive of these innovators, recognizing their talent and providing resources to actually implement their products.
- mdkoch84, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3once everyone relies on it, they'll start chargin especially after they own the pipes and we cant do ***** about it.
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Please, you don't have anything near the functionality of the Microsoft office suite. There's a reason it's free, because you get what you pay for.
- tdlrali, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Yeah, I'd love an invite. We should set up a system like the one used for Kevin's new startup, where everyone that gets an invite invites a few other people.
- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3here comes the spam.
