- Mwd500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I never mind googles ads and Ive clicked on a lot of them but I think I might start using an ad blocker if its flash ads everywhere.
- dallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I believe it when I see it. Google would be absolutely stupid to do this.
- isewise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thank God for Adblock
http://adblock.mozdev.org/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ah yes... the inevitable decline into mediocrity.
- Reddog_x2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3***** that.
I don't mind a few non-intrusive ads if they pay for my use of a service. I may even click on a few. But, I'm not dealing with this kind of garbage. I will set firefox to block that crap. If that fails, I will use another search engine.
This is the problem with going public. You owe it to your shareholders to pursue maximum profits, even if it means doing crap like this. If you stay private, you can turn down legal opportunities for profit if they violate your ethics. - Farsighted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree with Jerkhaircut, digg users are too gullible.
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I trust google, they must have some reason good to do this..."
You "trust" a corporation? Are you high? - neverender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3""

or really desperate for profits. - cavemonkey50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As much as I'd like to hate Google for this, I can't. Google is only providing this as an option to AdSense. It's still up to the participate to decide if they want to display those kind of ads on their site. The sites that will be using these kinds of ads most likely already have this type of ad with another ad provider, so Google is smart and capitalizing on a unreached market. Remember, if these ads become annoying its not Google's fault, it's the owner of the website.
- wbrendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is the end of Google. The reason Google's ads are successful is that they are unobtrusive. Popup/popunder/floating/flash ads are just plain annoying. I don't block Google ads currently, only the obnoxious flash/popup ads. If they start this *****, I'm going to block all Google ads. If they introduce these ads into Gmail, I'll just switch to Yahoo. I don't think Google realizes how fickle the public is. If you piss them off, they will switch in an instant.
- mordea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You gullible bastards.
- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3NOWHERE does it talk about POPUPS... SO stfu and bring some ***** proof before you open your mouth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3heh, do 'floaters' have any relation to 'sinkers'?
- TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Am I the ONLY one that noticed that there is *no* mention of any credible source anywhere on that page?
no digg. - mousky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hey, look, it is another misleading title. Nah, not on digg. First, Google has announced nothing. Sending a beta invite to a limited number of customers and users is not an announcement. Second, its a beta. That means that everything (or nothing) could change between the first day of the beta to the day the new ads are officially announced, if at all.
Before everyone jumps on the whole "do no evil" bandwagon, all Google is doing is trying out some new things. Last I looked, there is no evil in testing things. Besides, its AdSense, a voluntary program that websites sign up for. If any of this is true, all it will do is give people options. My word, how evil. - Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I do believe Anakin as finally gone Darth. If I may "YOU WERE THE CHOOSEN ONE!!!!!! You were to bring usablity to the 'net, not help clog it...." Funny, this happens when the 1st true evil AOL joined with it. Does this make Yahoo, Yoda? Which would mean....
DIGG IS LUKE!!!!!!!!!! Soon Google will chop off our hands - jerkhaircut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This story is bogus. Google recently stated that their advertising format would not change, when there were rumors about flash based ads.
- steve_s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Remeber google is just LESS evil.
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everybody claims to hate annoying types of ads (as do I), yet advertisers say they get the best response.
Somebody's lying. - aburd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What is the source for this info?
One guy posts on his blog that google is going to do something and digg fills up with comments screaming "GOOGLE IS EVIL!" or "GOOGLE SOLD OUT!". Why don't we wait until we have actual proof about any of this before reacting dumbly? Until a reputable source is talking about this I think it can be safely categorized along side the Google-Streaming-OS and the Google-Box. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If this is true then I will do my best to block them and stop using Google products that use these new ads.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2/me hates flash ads and popups.... "dont be evil" remember that google ;)
- ephemeral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep, I call BS on this one. If they have popups it will spell the end of google. The people at google have got to know this. If they don't, history will write their gravestone, and give birth to the next generation of slick search engines.
- FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2/me sees google's stock plummeting in the future..
If this does happen, I'm willing to bet that they'll make it so that the popup blocker in their toolbar doesn't work against their own popups.. - plusque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2popups? the g who wants to do good is going to be using on of the most hated forms of advertising? I think the big G's 5% share of AOL is already affecting the way they think... *sigh* They need to recall James Earl Jones's voice, 'This is GoogAOLe'. CNN (ads by Google)
- Farsighted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Everyone please shut the hell up with speculation. Google knows what it's doing. They will not go on and alienate its users with these ***** ads. They are too smart for that.
Wait and see. - Corgana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This can't be accurate. Google's toolbar BLOCKS these kind of popups.
- driedwater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"One guy posts on his blog that google is going to do something and digg fills up with comments screaming "GOOGLE IS EVIL!" or "GOOGLE SOLD OUT!". AGREED. Do we have more than one source? This could be another attempt for a blog to get on the front page people! Let's not make stupid comments until we know! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i call fake its not on the adsense blog but if its true i will remove my ad's if they gave us a choice that would be good
- masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay QUICK, someone start another blog and post that Google is going to run Flash Ads, and then post it on Digg and get all your friends to Digg it. Ahh - the sweet smell of gullability....
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Google announces"? Excuse me? Where exactly did Google announce this?
All I see is an unsourced claim with no corroboration on a website I've never heard of before. Forgive me if I don't take this on faith.
This isn't news until a source is provided, it has been verified, and official Google announcements are mde. Until then, this is an unverified RUMOUR at best. - Strangers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem is, Google have waited until they've had major market dominance to reveal their true hand, leaving people who used it in past in confidence of no Microsoft-esque blunders with nowhere to go.
Google.cn, now this and google linking to dodgy sites in its ads.
There's an excellent script available that removes google relevance ads from searches. http://diveintomark.org/projects/butler/
Needs greasemonkey though - Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed
- Kurisuteru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1check your sources! the blog entry refers to a news item on another site which again refers to the blog entry... LOL! gullible...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No.
- Logite2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I trust google, they must have some reason good to do this...
- Jadinlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google is currently "jumping the shark" and my faith in the them is quickly becoming eroded by the string of mistakes and blunders lately. But I absolutely HATE pop-ups and other intrusive ads (text ads are fine by me). If they head in this direction I will officially become ANTI-google and boycot their services at every opportunity. They should be very very very careful about pissing off their users. It takes very little for users to move onto the next big thing once they feel their trust has been violated. Personally, Google's stock can soar all it wants... but the company (from a users perspective) if on a downward trend.
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The digg title is a bt sensationalistic as I thought hat Google would now put crap on their main search page - whcih of cours is NOT what they are doing.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mark it here, The Decline of Google.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pop-ups, floaters, and interstatial ads are just a few of my LEAST favorite things.
Google does evil. - popezaphod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"That's a mother ***** gay move"
Doesn't seem so happy to me. Or are you one of those homophobes that calls things gay when he doesn't like them? - Stark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know who Jennifer Slegg is, so I'll believe it when I see it.
- studiophi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have no loyalties to google or any other large corporation. In one way or another, they all pretty much suck, they all are trying to get away with something cheesy/nasty, and I personally blame it on public stock. Google wasn't like this when their stock was private.
This, as well as Google's censoring in China, is making me reconsider using me reconsider using Google's products when there are other alternatives, such as the similar ad service offered by chitika.com. - Aeplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They have introduced image advertisements, but the image advertisements I have seen are fairly static. Google has been very successful in minimizing the pop-ups, pop-unders, and flashy advertisements of other marketing companies. Google has proven that it can be very profitable by using simple advertisements. In this way, Google is a marketing leader.
The Google AdSense code that is used currently does not open a new window when people click on the ads. The value of Google's clickthroughs will diminish, if some clicks on their supposed future advertisements program were accidental while attempting to close popups for example. They are currently trying to deal with click fraud. I doubt that Google would want to expose themselves to concerned clients that question the value of Google's traffic because of the potential for accidental as well as fraudulent clicks.
There are plenty of high-volume, low-quality traffic sources available. Google does not need to join this crowd. - mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is not good - google is now going to become like every other annoying search company and I fear their goal to "do no evil" is quickly falling apart.
- standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yahoo, your move.
- hwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never block Google's text ads but the first time I see anything that moves, blinks or flashes
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Do no evil" going out the pop-up window...
- andocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is an advertising company, think double click back in bubble V1, why they had such fanbois in the first place was always such a mystery to me. Fanbois are pretty sad at the best of time, but fanbois of a search/advertising company WTF?
- hwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... I will Adblock it
