- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41don't speak too soon.
- MasterSplinter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Anyone else see this as a giant Nike ad disguised as a MySpace clone?
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Am I the only one who's getting worried that Google is spreading like herpes?
- Cmain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Well at least it can't be any lamer than myspace.
- appleswitch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm thinking the other way around. This is a terrible Idea, and google should ( and could be planing to ) go onto something better.
Who here has actually used google pages? imagine that usability and design in a myspace successor
Who here has a gmail account? imagine that kind of usability in a myspace successor
Who here has used the terrible, autostart :(, music player, and seen the terrible broken QT links. Imagine the features and ease of use of the google player in a myspace successor
Now integrate Google Chat, advanced searching and slap Google Adwords on it and I believe you have a Social Networking site that you can not only be proud of, geek and not alike, but will leave myspace in the dust. - gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Joga is also a Brazilian soccer game, 3 on 3 in a tight space with small goals. This is for soccer fans and players only, ignorant yanks need not apply.
- Ghazi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Google "joga" and you won't get any hits returned for joga.com in the first page. Funny!
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I predict a basketball version within a year.
- samuraishow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Joga in Tagalog (Filipino language) means *****! Dig!
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Anyone else think it's hilarious that there's a .aspx extension there? .NET? From google?
- omenmedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes! Another site to add to my list of "lame sites to avoid like the plague", here is my existing list:
* myspace.com
;) - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6just like orkut... infact, same file name: GLogin.aspx (read: https://www.orkut.com/GLogin.aspx/). this is just an attempt to make google social networking popular in america (from my understanding orkut is incredibly successful in like... brazil?). orkut-joga accounts might even be interchangable... anyways, joga = orkut nike.
it seems like google is licencing their social network engine to advertisers, who then create specialized social networking communities? - L0phtpDK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Do no evil" eh?
As stated before, this clearly is just a big advertisement for Nike.... Why is google even envolved in this? It seems that nike just wanted to name drop google, and google agreed for a certain sum of money....
What happened to your motto Google?
** Edit: Is anyone else seeing that the google login is becoming the next Passport? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How do you not mention soccer once in this digg's description?
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"It's just for soccer players so definately not a myspace clone."
And fans. Soccer fans.
However, the fact that it's a myspace clone for soccer fans doesn't make it any less of a myspace clone. - plasticmind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This and orkut are just two more confirmations that Google, Inc. has no design skills whatsoever.
- BryanTheCrow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6You mean what everyone calls football, except Americans since we stole that name for our version of Rugby... ;-)
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have this slight feeling that Nike's Google ranking has just gone up... and a lot of Google employees will be getting new shoes sometime this week.
Seriously-- what are Larry and Sergey thinking? Does it rhyme with money by any chance...?
Orkut is bad enough as it is-- - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3sweatshoppr ?
- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The evil in this arrangement is so thick that you can almost smell it!
Think about it for a moment... one of the biggest marketing efforts on the planet with the least social responsibility (can you say "sweatshop") on the planet combined with the company that knows more about YOU than any other on the planet.
I guess it's targeted at Europe. Apart from the large european expat communities, places like Australia, Asia and America really aren't particularly interested in what the europeans call 'football' (and the rest call 'soccer') - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3no, orkut and joga accounts are not interchangable. I have a orkut, but can't get into joga.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Gike - Noogle ?
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3google is always late to the game here is another example. how is it planning to take on the goliath that is myspace. no one is going to switch if all their friends are there.
- davester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Joga in Tagalog (Filipino) means boobies (serious)...hahahhahah!
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Lame.
- OsakaWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The record company that does this will bypass the music industry promotion machine and become the RIAA killer. Digg!
- shadytrees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Screw basketball. We all know chess is where the real money is at.
- Inbal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is incredibly lame.
- Workster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It's just for soccer players so definately not a myspace clone.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i see your point but judging from recent google products that were released in the last year i dont see any light at the end of the tunnel.
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The slogan.... "Just Do Evil"
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2soccer has enough of a problem grabbing a foothold in the US when it's competing with the big four: football, baseball, basketball and even hockey . . . but I bet the soccer-only version will do very well outside the US and at least the site isn't as garish as myspace.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So Google is pretty much abandoning Orkut?
I forsee Orkut getting consumed by this, I guess. - findhostcoupons, on 03/22/2009, -0/+1Wow, very interesting news! Hope a new project will be successful!
- illu45, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gah... I assume that its meant for soccer-related news? I couldnt tell... Too many Nike ads and clutter on the site.
- nads, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Honestly, do we really need another one?
- neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I don't want to sound too negative, but this site -- from what I've looked at so far -- looks very lame. First, the design is horrid, and naturally you can't get in unless someone you know is already in, which has always been a catch 22. It literally looks like they pasted a half-baked layout atop some premade Google pages (e.g. Orkut). When you go to login you are told that you can't join unless you get invited, yet right under that it states that you CAN join by going back to homepage. Wtf? Anyway, this is such a blatant product placement attempt that it makes even /me/ ill and I don't mind that kind of stuff at all. Digg--;
EDIT: I do see where it allows you to get invited now, they burried it on the homepage under the gigantic banner of nothing. - neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"how is it planning on taking on the goliath that is yahoo. no one is going to switch if all their friends use it."
- amigiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nike=Sweatshops=Evil and Google have lent their brand to them.
At the international level sport is frankly mimic warfare. But the significant thing is not the behaviour of the players but the attitude of the spectators: and, behind the spectators, of the nations who work themselves into furies over these absurd contests, and seriously believe — at any rate for short periods — that running, jumping and kicking a ball are tests of national virtue.
George Orwell http://orwell.ru/library/articles/spirit/english/e_spirit - Erty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ah, saw lots of nike ads on TV a while ago with Eric Cantona speaking about making the game beautiful and stuff... wondered what they were for, I guess it's this :p
Could become pretty popular I think, lots of football fans out there especially this year :>
Oh and soccer is the dumbest word ever. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it could definately be worse, although i agree with you..
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Myspace started out as a site for indie bands to promote themselves. This is just the footy version.
- hashkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Soccer- or football- or fitba'- is also pretty big throughout Latin America- especially South America.
But joga.com is way far away from the clean, simple, untainted approach that's gotten Google this far. Shame really. - amalik49, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12 neurokaotix:
Community is more analogous to chat (Yahoo!/MSN/AIM crushing Google there) than to search. Your friends/ contact CAN keep you in one place once you reach a certain (albeit unkown) tipping point where your switching costs are too high.
But your point is still valid, since 18 months ago Friendster was as hot as an oiled-up Jessica Alba. Now it's more like an oiled-up Hillary Clinton. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yay... just what we need! More 'social networking' sites!
Luckily, when I rule the world, these social networking sites will help me purge the world of absolute stupidity. I simply need to eradicate everyone who uses more than one. (Or maybe even everyone who uses one..) - syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ads, ads and more ads, brainwashing is key. just wait until world cup comes around, you see it explode with soccer holigans bashing each other whos team is the best.
- philmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"what the world needs now is another social networking site like i need a hole in the head"
Sing that to the tune of "what the world need now" by Cracker. - plugitin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh man, saw this on /. a earlier today, I guess not that many people are into soccer on digg. Anyways I think the whole invite thing is kinda stupid. I really want to join and check it out, but who knows when I can possibly get an invite. Hopefully it's like gmail where you get about 50+ invites a week, so you can possibly never run out of invites (or disk space :) )
- intoflatlines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1no digg..
for soccer players only and it's filled with nike ads in addition to a poor site design - benotspecial, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1while i don't like the idea of social networking site to promote the nike brand, at least they are up front about it. after signing up millions of young people, myspace sold all of their information to intermix media, i.e. rupert murdoch and fox news.
