Google:
Can leverage a partnership to use the IBM name and trust to sell Google Apps to the very cautious enterprise
Google can potentially seek IBM to design custom new hardware to optimise google solutions
(imagine and integrated server that runs a Google Apps Intranet Service, a private server that can host Gmail, Docs, Blogger etc)
IBM wants to improve interoperabilty, increase its Web precence a, improve usability of its software. and improve its public/consumer image

- YodaJones, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3This is too funny. In IBM's heyday the world used what were called "dumb" terminals connected to one big computer. Dumb terminals were nothing more than a keyboard and display. IBM never got over it when Personal Computers took over and ate a lot of their "big Iron" sales. If Google and IBM get their way you will have again a dumb terminal but instead of being connected to a big computer down the hall you will just be connected to the big computer on the Internet.

- Jexie, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2IBM is a patent warehouse (though maybe recently giving it up to HP for largest), personal computers have never been their core business though I am sure they would have loved to be dominant in that area as well. They invent and own so much of the technology out there that every chip, board, and memory maker needs (although I think their software sucks didn't they invent the relational database?). Providing centralized computing is just one of the things they do, they never really got over the rep that IBM's all about mainframes and it probably even benefits them that most people don't know how big they really are.
