- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I, for one, welcome our tree hugging Google overlords.
- doxtorray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I seriously think that companies should have nothing to do with their employees' consumption choices. These companies do not exist to "save the environment." They exist to provide value to consumers of the company's products and enhance the welfare of their shareholders. Let them give a bonus for good job performance, and let the employee decide how to spend it!!
- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because leasing a car is a ridiculous waste of money.
- Powder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great idea
- just_chris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do people post links to blogs, instead of the actual story? This is so annoying, the blog had incorrect figures for Google, where the article was correct ($5K for new porchase, $2.5K for lease).
- dmbrooking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"leasing a car is not a waste of money if you want to switch cars frequently, and don't want to go thru the hassle of selling it or getting shafted on the trade-in..."
Those reasons do not say why it is not a waste of money. And those reason don't change the fact that leasing is a waste of money. The only reason to lease is because you can't afford the car you want. And if you can't afford it, you shouldn't be getting it.
When your lease is up, you have nothing to show for the car payments that you just spent 3 or 4 years making. You have nothing that you can turn around and sell and maybe make some money off of.
So while the reasons you gave may be valid reasons for leasing to some people, they are just reasons that offset the waste of money. Just something that someone has to decide which they want more. - chicagospur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a shame that the Google Boeing 767 is not a hybrid.
- MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would google pay more if you lease one instead of buying it?
- hotdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wont help any if there arent enough hybrids on the market. Just means toyota can charge more for theirs
- _jinx_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Leasing actually makes a lot of sense like JRMillion mentioned. Some people would rather just spend money practically renting a car that they can depend on then worrying about buying a new one or worrying about paying for repairs 2 years down the road. Just like an apartment or rented house, some people don't want to own a house simply cause of maintenance, higher bills and the stress of selling.. what ever floats your boat!
Anyways, this is a great article if I could digg twice I would!

It isn't a question about price alone.
It might be inexpensive to power a car engine off of dead-babies ~ that doesn't make it a worthwhile source of fuel... - JRMillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0leasing a car is not a waste of money if you want to switch cars frequently, and don't want to go thru the hassle of selling it or getting shafted on the trade-in...
If you usually buy a car and drive it into the ground, then yes, leasing is a waste of money. - Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0blah. nothing says awesome like paying slightly more than average for a new car which has a driving experience equivalent of Valium.
sorry, gas isn't expensive enough to give up enjoying driving just yet... - alt3r360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate to be the one to deflate this ozone bubble, but, it is obvious to everyone that hybrids suck. If they were so great, everyone would have one. Come on, Google execs have to BRIBE their employees to conserve. I guess it makes them feel better about flying their corporate jets and heating/cooling their palatial estates.
Alternative fuel and other technologies are needed to solve the global emission problem. If it makes you happy to drive around in one of those god awful hybrids, go ahead. You all look really goofy (don't forget to slap on your "green" bumper sticker). If it weren't so funny it would be sad because Google seems to care and has resoures that could be used do something really meaningful. - thelightjockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About time too, roll it out in america as a tax incentive.....
The UK Government offers tax cuts if you run a company car with a more efficient engine and has done for many a year. - Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It isn't a question about price alone.

yeah. driving a car that gets 50 miles to the gallon instead of 25 (hell, the corvette gets 25 on the highway) is really going to save the planet. if you're so worried, carpool. - wet_napkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I now hate google. *checks off google on "companys I hate" list*
- jmetcalf27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wet_napkin = lame | google = cool
- jman420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Leasing a car is a huge waste of money, trust me.
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They're not evil -- they're giving out perks to people who are saving the environment! I love Google.
- jimmyM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0will they pay your extra rent if you move really close to work and walk?
if 4 employees carpool in a hybrid, do they all get paid? because they are saving more of our precious rescources than i can imagine. all praise to those holy people who conserve our resources. - celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very awesome story!
- Maverick83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fuel efficeint? Sure. Cost efficient? Not for a long time.

The whole reason for hybrids is to reduce tailpipe emissions and to improve mileage
*****. - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wait.... they pay more if you lease a hybrid than if you outright buy one???? That doesnt make any sense... i beleive the submitter must have gotten it backwards
- wavesmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The company I work for in Canada provides incentives for driving hybrids.
http://www.t4g.com
How well do they work in the winter though? My friend had a Jetta Diesel and was told, after it wouldn't start for the 15th time, that it wasn't made for cold climates!
How much do you need to get to offset the higher cost of purchasing a hybrid anyway? - wet_napkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Saving the environment is cool."
@gnatinator:
Its too bad that Hybrids don't really save the environment. - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great idea
