- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I also learned a new word today:
dictionary
n : a reference book containing an alphabetical list of words with information about them - grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4wow... look at all those clean 24 hour oscilations.....
anyone else freaked out ( in a good way ) by these global brainish waves ?
As cool as this I just cant stop wondering... couldnt google pretty easily predict the stock market for most retail companies via real time macro search data...? - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"What's the point of searching "Froogle" for iPod? Apple price-fixes them!"
Yes, but if you look at the other search terms (that both Michael and Janet were in the top ten), you get a sense of who you're dealing with here. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 zeitgeist-
A German term meaning "spirit of the time." It refers to the moral and intellectual trends of a given era - mlebeau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone notice that the alt tags are all messed up on the images? They clearly just copy-pasted the html; under "Phenomena", the alt tags are all from the "Movies" section.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How on earth is Janet Jackson the most popular search? Didn't her 15 minutes of fame run out 30 years ago?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Hello Daniel,
>Just thought you might like to know you have image alts wrong on your 2005
Zeitgeist for example World Affairs - London Bombing
>has alt of "Harry potter", I'm pretty sure they are not the same thing. > I
would surgest checking the image alts.
You have a keen eye and we appreciate your taking the time to write. I've
asked our web team on this project to double-check the image alts again. You
should see corrections before long if they are needed.
Thanks again, and happy holidays.

Google could probably give a huge description of us by using their logs, with all the different programs and sites that have now and in the near future.
google search - you search for the things you like and need to know about
gmail - logs all your mail
firefox extension - send them all your posts and sites you go to.
keyhole/google earth - you probably search your hometown if not even your house
google messanger - all your friends that you talk to and your chat logs about what you talk to them in private
froogle - what you buy/like to buy
new mobile gmail, etc - they know your cell # and phone stuff
save search history - doesn't log in cookies so you know their storing that data
personal home page - what sites you like to hear rss news from
blogger - you tell them your personal stories and facts about your life
groups/news - knows what you search for in news and what you read most often about
and many other things they have
Not that i am anything against google (I pretty much use all of their stuff) but if you think about it, its scary how much info they could have in the future about us. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Myspace is #1??
how sad.
I also think it funny that Baidu came in 3rd
haha what a big F you to the riaa :-D - agarc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2zeitgeist: "The taste, outlook, and spirit characteristic of a period or generation." (dictionary.com)

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg till they put in the porn searches. why be biased like that? im sick of the internet being toned down for kids.
- ompalaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of stupid searches. :o
- tamarind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You mean the World Wide Web, not "the Internet," and Google is not the whole World Wide Web. Google has to appeal to a large audience and can't be overtly sexual. Vote with your keyboard; start a porn search engine.
- joshcav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow this is a real eye opener. Google will be able to spot trends before anybody.
- Digg360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great digg! If I could, I would digg it again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> It's not really what I expect from them.
Yes, well... until google ***** out their AJAXified CDS, I guess the over paid, ivory tower fscks that work there will just have to deal with whatever tools the underlings they dump their tasks on decide to use. - darkinfero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0really kool
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"no digg till they put in the porn searches. why be biased like that? im sick of the internet being toned down for kids."
I'm sick of people always assuming things done in good taste is just a matter of catering to kids. You think maybe zeitgeists based on people yanking their meat isn't all that interesting to adults as well?
Whoa dude... in February "hot titties" outperformed "oral sex." Sweet! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow its google-tastic
- butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1a New google feature I would like to see is ...
You enter a search phrase and it returns the very first time that phrase was requested and the results it produced then.
Then id like to see the Graph ( Zeit'ified) to show the popularity of the phrase .
Now that would be cool - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Diggit™
- Tom | http://www.tomwrote.info - CiceroGuru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yet another shining example of virtues of the collective information of masses and what it tells us about ourselves as individuals
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1One of the coolest charts is for "London." You can see, I think, the almost steady searches for the word throughout the work week and dips every weekend. Amazing just how repetitive that chart is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Llearn to spell. Muppet.
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Porn is always filtered out!
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@DarthGordolf: If that were true, then there wouldn't be the time-sensitive spikes in the graphs. If the XBOX 360 had the same number of searches as two large natural disasters (which I doubt it did), then it would have shown up as a spike around November, which the graphs all include (see Black Friday under Phenomena).
- silasfank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"How on earth is Janet Jackson the most popular search? Didn't her 15 minutes of fame run out 30 years ago?"
One word, Superbowl.
What I wanna know is why so many people need computer desks... - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i never believe the number 1 search theres no way its nor porn
- reversial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find it interesting that some things, such as "WMD", increased BEFORE the actual event happened, whereas others, such as Rosa Parks, were a complete and sudden increase.
- Poppinfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice
Love the "WMD" graph, although a scale would have been nice - rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If only I could type in a keyword of my own and get these graphs. The crap they list do me no good.
--dan - twinspop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ElectricGrandpa
Yeah, I noticed that too. Weird. Some inside joke @ Google? - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else notice that the alt tags on all the charts say "Harry Potter". That's pretty poor fthat nobody at Google noticed it...

- lego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those of you that seem to think "myspace", "ares", "baidu" and "wikipedia" are the top search terms of the year, they're not. Those are the top gainers for the year.
- zymotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why was Nostradamus so highly searched in 2001?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice!
- holojames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I looked at the source and was kind of surprised that this is put together with Dreamweaver, also if you look at the source of the Zeitgeist homepage the HTML looks pretty dated with unquoted inline attributes everywhere. It's not really what I expect from them.
- MrPockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the definition guys, i am now slightly less confused then i was when i read the title.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why was Nostradamus so highly searched in 2001?"
Probably those quatrains attributed to him that circulated shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks that seemed to predict those events. The only problem was that the quatrains were hoaxes. You can probably dig up info on Google about it. - mcpaige, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Anyone else notice that the alt tags on all the charts say "Harry Potter". A few are tagged Star Wars, but not ALL have alt tags. - Chromakode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting, though I wish there were scales for the graphs. Simplicity != Better
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I meant "learn to spell" obviously.
