- bitterg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25There's nothing in this story about Google creating a social network aggregator.
- dmr0240, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Essentially a dupe of http://digg.com/tech_news/Opening_up_the_Social_Network_Graph although that too is blogspam.
The real article is here: http://bradfitz.com/social-graph-problem/ - dav0, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12so basically, Microsoft Passport was a good idea, but it was like, 10 years ahead of its time.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Dugg for
"users who hop from community to community like crack addled humming birds skipping from flower to flower." - marcz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why don't they improve Orkut first?
- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'm afraid that nobody's going to like you if you plug your blog, no matter how relevant it is.
- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Actually it's pretty big in Brazil, apparantly. According to Wikipedia it's the eighth most visited site in the world, and the second in india.
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkut) - profertel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2from http://bradfitz.com/social-graph-problem/: ...there's a lot of hesitation in the developer / "Web 2.0" community about being slaves to Facebook, dependent on their continued goodwill, availability, future owners, not changing the rules, etc. That hesitation I think is well-founded.
Do you think Brad knows whereof he speaks? - aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2cos they'd have to buy SixApart too, and the only reason I can see Google buying another THREE blogging platforms is to kill them off, or cannabalise them for Blogger.
- mmalone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nope. Not in California. "Pursuant to Section 2870 of the California Labor Code, the requirements set forth in Section 2(a) of this Agreement shall not apply to an invention that I developed entirely on my own time without using [Company]'s equipment, supplies, facilities, or trade secret information except for those inventions that either: (i) relate at the time of conception or reduction to practice of the invention to [Company]'s business, or actual or demonstrably anticipated research or development of [Company]; or (ii) result from any work performed by me for [Company]."
I talked to Brad yesterday, and he's not doing this with Google. He's starting a non-profit. He also pointed out that a lot of companies were only willing to cooperate if it was a non-profit (they didn't want to help the competition). - whiteguysamurai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I would like to see what brad does next, livejournal was more flexible than facebook, lighter than myspace and deeper than friendster, then sixapart took over and shelved all the great things coming to livejournal.
I think i would rather just stick with livejournal till there is a worthy successor, even though it's a shadow of what it once was, it's still lightyears ahead of the rest. - cbergeron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I guess Orkut isn't working out for them.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2loads of people use it. Just no-one you know, because outside of Gandalf the Druid on Warcraft, you have no friends.
- Carnage4Life, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The entire reason "Facebook apps" have buzz is the Facebook part. That's like saying you want to make a sandwich with all the buzz of a hamburger without the burger patty in the middle.
- kowsosoft, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think the author misses the point that the original essay wasn't about making it easier to run around and join a bunch of different social networking sites, but about enabling people to create apps with all the buzz of a "Facebook app" without the Facebook part - nobody wants to get behind a proprietary vessel for their own business model, because it's too precarious, but if there's an independent, open source method to handle such authentication schemes, you solve that problem but you still get to keep all the good parts without having to re-invent the wheel *again*.
- profertel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I am going to plagiarize shamelessly and use that quote without attribution all over teh net.
- sandieman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Zinggggg
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I resemble that remark
Damn, I think I've signed up to every social network, photo sharing, bookmarking, blogging site there is. One logon fits all would suit me, because I can't remember the passwords to most of them (or even the email address I signed up to them with) - talledega500, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Its not as good as this one whatever it is............
http://www.wheresthejuice.com - Palish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Orkut is a social network, not a social network aggregator.
- mohamedmansour, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It is so true ... Some sites did use it, maybe some thought it was not needed? Then Google introduced Google Accounts 5 years later where they let people authenticate through them. I liked the Microsoft Passport IDEA, I would trust Microsoft/Google with storing personal information rather than 3rd party websites. This news isn't anything new, they talking about a *central social storage* what is the point of that and who will do that? If that were the case, beh, makes us users more complicated.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1MyGoogleBookR (beta)
- mookieXL, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Googg?
- rkminc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I think the issue of social network fatigue and the "walled garden" problem is overblown. Having competing networks is better overall for the consumer in the end, in terms of innovation. My 2c here: http://mediatrending.com/2007/08/18/social-networks-as-walled-gardens-whats-the-issue/
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Agreed.
- SunAlex, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0oh nice. Everywhere I listen and read about Google.may be soon my nightmares will be about Google?)

http://search.ashtech.info/Google - mike_p, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Firstly, welcome to Digg.
Secondly, how about you RTFA!? Why not visit the guys blog and read the post in its entirety as well before making comments like that. - sukeban, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1As a current LJ user, THAT would be vastly better than the Six Apart management...
- cbergeron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Wrong. Microsoft's Passport was proprietary technology. If it ever got compromised, it would have ***** a lot of sites and users.
OpenID is another story. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Psh, we already have http://www.tabber.org, why do we need this? [/plug]
- MISDIREK7ED, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Orkut blows chunks.. I'm pretty sure that the only people on it are from Brazil. Which I guess would be nice if you speak Portuguese.
- Razster, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1How come Google doesn't just buy out Livejournal? Maks sense to me.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1yeah, it was a good idea, but did you ever see it outside of microsoft.com?
Same problem with OpenID, fantastic idea, but until MySpace, Facebook, FlickR, LastFM, Technorati, Twitter etc etc support it (and users start using it) its not going anywhere. - badboibillie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Do they mean something like this, but more integrated and improved upon? www.socialurl.com
- Burpeey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I've seen this in forum communities as well. For some reason it never seems to work. Security, paranoia and desire for control amongst the owners of the greater sites prevents these concepts from ever taking off. It's essentially a good idea, would benefit all users, and should be the next step, but looking at past attempts in similar markets I foresee this won't get off the ground to become a huge "open" success.
- coooldude987, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0 also called as social inter networking
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I was writing about this as much as a year ago. It is the logical next step. Read Earthweb to get an idea of where we're headed.
- landohlakes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0The most interesting part was that Facebook thinks it's the new Microsoft.
- bs0l, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1google grid
- Palish, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Brad Fitzpatrick now works for Google, so anything he creates during his stay there will be owned by Google.
- wonderlane, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0the post dotcom meaning of "moving forward" has changed to imply grief. careful my cohort-techies how you use that buzzword bingo fodder.
- xShad0w, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Digg for life
- zaycev, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0google always surprised
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+0Mentions facebook apps.
- Lightspeed2, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1rofl google sucks, orkut hahaah noone signed up on at gayness
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2Unless, of course, you look at the source's HUGE HONKING HEADLINE, and I quote: "GOOGLE WORKING ON SOCIAL NETWORK AGGREGATOR"
- antonioevans, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1h...I run a food and dining social network, http://FriendsEAT.com. Would vertical networks be hurt or benefit from an aggregator? Anyone interested in getting a PM from your little sister's My Little Pony Network?
