- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google advertisements are always non intrusive and they are actually geared toward me and what I am doing. Google knows that I don't need to add 3in. to my penis and I'm not old enough to need Viagra. Google machines can farm my data as long as there are not humans reading the data and using for their own sinister purposes... I trust the machines.
I feel the same way about that scanner at certain airports that sees through clothes. If it was just a computer scanning instead of a person and if that data wasn't stored in any way (in viewable image form) then I wouldn't have a problem. - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2^^^^^And thats what they want you to think....
- linuxbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who cares if google has your info. Bettar than Yahoo or MS I say.
- Sanctums, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...But isn't it better. I don't have to trust google more than microsoft to know that they're a good company.
- Memo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm going to love the day that is sure to come when Google finally reveals their fangs. Everyone is going to be 'OMG WHY DID GOOGLE BETRAY US'. :)
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I love this part: "By using Google Secure Access, your internet traffic will be encrypted, preventing others from viewing the information you transmit."
Yes, encrypted from everyone BUT Google, the company that really wants your information in the first place! - b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Reply to this comment"
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are *a lot* of Mac users in San Francisco. Where is the Mac client?
- WJHamel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't think so
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"anyone know how Google plans to pay for their "free" WiFi? will it be ad-supported?"
even if it was, and i lived in SF, i'd use it. a couple of ads wouldn't bother me in the least; so i say now... - t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the major news here is that Google is planning on providing WiFi spots in the SF bay area... here's the direct quote from the FAQ: "The program can currently be downloaded at certain Google WiFi locations in the San Francisco Bay Area."
anyone know how Google plans to pay for their "free" WiFi? will it be ad-supported? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hope they come to ny

- TA_Superman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm did you guys actually know Google is run by AI seeking to enslave the human race in order to harness their body heat to power themselves! This my friend is the secret to Google!
- bluefire0728, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this why Google has been buying a lot of dark fiber? For this "Google WiFi"?
If so, then I am very excited. - n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i do believe this was already covered.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm just wondering how soon until Google expands this wi-fi service nationwide (which I do believe they will - why stop in San Fran)?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0even though im jamming on some guys wifi as we speak (and there are several other decent connections available)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I spent part of today digging into the specifics of the vpn client. Its still an ongoing process that I'll continue tomorrow. Ultimate goals is to try and get it to connect to a different PPTP vpn server.

I think this first phase is just using Google as a VPN access point to secure your WiFi. The Google owned WiFi will come later. First they add VPN security and get a customer base of Google Secure Access users. This can be done fairly cheaply. You need to creat network peer points with the WiFi providers so you have fast access. Once you have a good database of clients, you can pick and choose your physical WiFi deployments where you get the biggest bang for your buck. This will be the expensive part so you want to choose those carefully. There's a graveyard full of companies who tried to do this but couldn't get the subscribers needed to stay afloat.
It just might work....

O_O
Aw well, I installed it, btw anyone know what this mean in it's "About" page on the program.
"Tunc tua res agitur,
Paries cum proximus ardet."
Started it up, but I don't know how to use this. It connected to vpn.google.com and I couldn't go to any sites. I'm guessing I would have to mess with the settings in it

Be thankful you don't have to deal with monster earthquakes. - r00ted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol. I just installed it....well, pg2 blocked a connection to 66.28.250.27, so I guess google has a new affiliate or whatever? :P

- paulbram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's Google going to do next? Reinvent the wheel?
- -dXs-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to all those that have beef with this.... you don't have to use it. Simple.
That's why they're a user agreement; the service is provided freely under these conditions.
at least google is honest in its revenue generating endeavours. Also, the money made goes to providing new technologies and services (almost always free of cost may i add), its not money in the pocket of Page, Brin, and Schmit or whatever his name is - mattjb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The paranoia from some people regarding Google makes you really wonder. What are you hiding that you are so defensive about? Kiddy porn? Warez distribution? Employed with the Secret Service? If you're the average law-abiding citizen, I don't see why you'd be so uptight about this rumored service.
- clancywiggum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why was this dugg, couldnt someone just navigated the story that was dugg yesterday.

Sure. You think that there is not some plan to see revenue off of this. I am not sure why some see the "Google Brothers" has two pilgrams trying to change the world. Yes, they have given us some great things (Gmail, Google search engine), but these guys are capitalizing in some form. Free for us means $ for them. - lazyfanatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course they are going to capitalize on it, they are a company that is involved in making profit as well as technology. Use it or don't. Geeze.
