- redheadfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed. my finger hurts from scrolling so much...
looks interesting but my connection is working just fine. don't need to funk anything up. - psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not so sure. I'm using the accelerator and I don't seem to have any dupe post problems at all.
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The new Google Accelerator features a new approach to web accereration. To speed up broadband?
Wow Now I can see what I save surfing for prOn. And of course Privacy Advocacy Will up in arms about this latest google offering. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a lot of dupes!
- vekron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quote from installer:
"Google Web Accelerator makes your Internet access go faster by routing your Web surfing through Google's servers."
Does anyone else think that this is an ideal way to trace all of your online habits? - clownblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you clearing Firefox's cache each time you try your highly scientific test?
- jeff94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just installed; clean, unobtrusive, has potential. Try it out.
- dragonflight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It hasn't killed my Firefox RSS feeds and it seems to be doing its job (even though my connection was so fast I didn't really have to wait on my end for the page to load).
- MistaMatt90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0by the looks of things, if this is going through their servers, they can obviously take a certain amount of information from the user's browsing. Is this just a scheme for them to improve their search results?
- kwelling12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems to be doing a fine job for me
- ttam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting. I wonder if it acts as a proxy server? That'd be an easy way to gain anonymity at work.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What does "dupe" mean?
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"...new approach to web accereration..."
Accereration? Why would we want to accererate the web? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it actually looks for all browsers not just firefox and ie. Its on their help page
Can I run Google Web Accelerator on a browser other than Internet Explorer or Firefox?
For other browsers running on Windows, you'll need to manually configure your proxy settings to 127.0.0.1:9100 for HTTP connections. - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did extensive browsing and it saved me 5 seconds, but having an extra .exe running in my ram to save 5 seconds just annoys me for some reason, but then again I am obsessive compulsive
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tried it and looks like it does a good job!
- n-g-k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is a very good article that goes along with what I wrote above:
http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=2858 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BugMeNot, it actually looks like your Google Web Accelerator is kickin' ass and takin' name.
- shooby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dupe means "duplicate"
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One can only imagine the number of porn sites google is going to end up caching through this service.
- djdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Duplicate Posts Are From The GWA Program.
There Is A Bug In The Program, Check The Web Accelerator Google Group.
I Would recommend Uninstalling until they fix the problem. - xalen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah, the irony..
- DirtyCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol yeah i just checked the comments cuz it was so many. Boring..Google is a Hacker in CEO's clothing :P......i still use it just not the web accelerator thingy...creepy
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if only it worked for K-Meleon it actually *would* be fast. Oh well. I guess this is the one piece of Googleware I won't be using.
- xdviper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0firefox???????
- Lyphen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the hell is with the multiple messages?
- n-g-k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the antithesis of the anonymous proxy, you're giving up privacy for a couple more seconds of speed here and there? Google is going to log everything, find out who goes from what site to whatever other site, datamine, look for patterns, find out all kinds of things about people and society for what purpose? To help them sell more advertising and make more money? Well, that's just the primary reason, who knows what other nefarious motivations there could be. Imagine yourself owning google with all of that supercomputing power, others have said it above, google is the ultimate hacker. You can have your GWA, I say "No thanks!"
Better solution: use Firefox, hold down CTRL when you click, any links you click on will open in a new tab and begin downloading. Using this method you can click a bunch of links you will want to see, then by the time you get to the tabs they are already opened. Use CTRL-W to close the tab when you are done reading it and the next tab will be up. - Dotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can turn it off - grade = C.
It KILLS firefox rss bookmarks, and is painfully slow compared to my usual speeds... - Tim_G, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see a difference.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All it does is read cache and just bring up the cache. Visit http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/central.html then refresh the page, it will display a bit faster each time.
- MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't do much for me ive done like a minute and it hasnt sped me up at all.
- cheeseonstuf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow. douche bag says what?:
"thats alot of dupes"
"googles plan for world taker-over"
325 comments. wow. kevin, i mean kevin's friend, please smack these people in the mouth :) thank you. - psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just installed and surfed around a little. I actually do notice a difference in the speed in which paged render, especially on graphics-intensive sites. The meter reports time savings upwards to 4 seconds.
I got these results after going into preferences and changing the default speed from DSL to Cable Modem/T1.
One thing that does concern me is the possible privacy issues. Even if the people behind this is Google I don't feel entirely comfortable having all my browsing activities going through a third-party server. - alientrader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0verkon has it right, for the nominal improvement why should we let any one company's servers be privy to all your traffic, even if it is google. I mean, what if this was MS. Forget it, this may actually be usefull and you should try it.
- TWiTsoldier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OR, instead of going through all that trouble with troublesome keyboard shortcuts, simply click the mouse wheel on a link, and voila! It's opened in a new tab. Same goes for closing a tab too; just middle click.
As for the Web Accelerator thing, it seems to be popular enough, as Google has "currently reached our maximum capacity of users and are actively working to increase the number of users we can support." I guess I'm not trying this thing out after all. - alientrader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that would be *our* traffic
-sorry, it was bugging me - jeff94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been using for about an hour, and am just starting to benefit.
- djdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I Haven't Noticed A Change...It might have actually slowed things down a little.
I Did Notice That My IP Address Now Points To Mountain View,C.A.
From Pittsburgh,P.A.
I Think This Is Just Another One Of Googles Programs To Take Over The World! - logicalnoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it actully stopped my connection dead. No pages would load. I quickly uninstalled and amazig ly EVERYTHING accelerated to normal speed! By the way I run ADSL through a linksys router.
- mocheeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This digg is making me laugh harder than I have in a really long time. I hope this doesn't dupe.
- jeff94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate stupid people
- fourzerofour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm works good so far for me
