- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Google Talk can't call regular phones yet. RTFA.
- MrRuckus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Google does seem to be making all the right moves.
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yahoo does NOT use an open protocol. Like MSN and AIM, it's been reverse-engineered. Google DID create Jingle, which is the voice extension for Jabber, which I think is a pretty big achievement.
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sorry about that.. i'm new here... i'll remember to RTFA next time and not jump to conclusions. :)
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3IMHO, Google Talk is one of the best services out there. Its protocol is completely open, and as a result, any Jabber client will work with it. You can also use it with any other Jabber user from any server. Their official client has the simplest, nicest looking UI of any commercial instant messaging service out there. In addition, they've released a free software library that allows clients to integrate Google Talk voice functionality. The fact that they use an open, established protocol and actually help extend that protocol without cutting off third-party clients just highlights the difference in philosophy between Google and other companies like AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft.
- jbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Skype. How many major releases have each platform made in the last year? Skype is out shipping and out innovating all of them.
Does anyone use LibJingle yet? Does GTalk interoperate with anyone for voice? - cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Skype is better than Gtalk for voice, no doubt about that. However, its text chat is extraordinarily sub-par. Also, Gtalk integrates really nicely into Gmail, even if you use a third-party client.

That's what's so great about Google. They have a secure financial source and not all their actions are motivated by money. They give their employees 1/3 of their work day to work on personal projects that get to be released by Google. So the extra projects get cared by people emotionally attached to them and it doesn't take any more money then they are already spending. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"secretive dark fiber pruchases"....that has been reported at least a few dozen times on Digg, and that eVERYONE who wants to know has known for over a yer now.
- cg0def, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4As PC World put it, "Going from the likes of Yahoo Messenger to Google Talk is a bit like going from a noisy consumer electronics superstore to a quiet boutique up a side street."
Ok first of all Yahoo uses an open protocol and there are MANY clients that allow you to use the network ( some even to it's fullest extent ). So the fact that the official client is a pop-up-whore really doesn't make a difference. Google Talk is still gaining critical mass and considering that google has and extensive advertising system I wouldn't be surprised if at some point it gets integrated in the chat client as well. You need an account anyway so targeted advertisement would be quite easy to implement.
Also the other inaccuracy is that the Google developers DID NOT create a messaging service. The Jabber protocol has been around for a while and the only thing that Google added to it is the ability to use voice communication.
Anyway this whole article contains only speculations so no did. Nonetheless it could very much be correct about an upcoming Google VoIP service. If it's cheaper than Skype and integrates about the same way that Skype does with desktop apps ( Outlook contacts and such ) then it's more than welcome on my computer. - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3ha ha. What hypocrites. They complain about net neutrailty, and then create secret networks to run VoIP services.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Like what?
What moves have they made that have been profitable for them? Other than search and ad sense...NOTHING.
Every service they have come out with sense has been a money loser, and has gotten pretty much ZERO market share. - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5eh....I'm not so sure
Question: Am I the only one who hasn't been insanely impressed by Google over the past few years? or is it just me? - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2That's a good story... bleh.
- tnwake, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Um.. that whole post is a bunch of "he said", "she said", "her baby's daddy's cousin's uncle said" crap. It starts with hearsay that "might" happen.. and if that happens then something else "might" happen and so on and so on. Worthless.
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1As google keeps buying other companies i just see their product base sort of drift away from each other. The integration was awesome at first, but i keep seeing holes. I'm sure they're working on integrating EVERYTHING eventually tho.
