- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Can somebody explain to me why Google continues to upgrade Google Video even though they own youtube?
- JohnP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you look at the services, besides offering free flash based video streaming they are pretty different.
Youtube is basically a community video site, with tools suiting newer internet users.
Google video is a tad more complex and technically more impressive. It doesnt revolve around community input, it just offers a solid service for sharing your videos. - SpikeX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some people prefer YouTube and it's interface and the way it's done, and some people prefer Google Video and the way it does its videos. I doubt they'll be merged and I'm sure both will stay intact and continue to be updated. Wouldn't you hate to lose YouTube (or Google Video for that matter)?
- JohnM5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its called Google Talk. Its been out for a while...
- netgoddess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uh, Google Talk? Been around for some time. http://www.google.com/talk/
- secleinteer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, Youtube is definitely more community-oriented, but I prefer Google Video, because they let you download avi's of the videos posted. Also, the videos on Google Video can be of much higher quality than on Youtube.
- Jassman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thanks. I was actually unaware of Google Talk.
- ioannusdeverani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's pretty cool. I want that to be in gmail. Nice UI
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google Talk as allready mentioned
but what seperates it from msn and yahoo and aol is jabber support
which lets you use whatever jabber messenger you want - cquilliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like the two to remain seperate. Use YouTube for all user-submitted videos, and use Google Video for all "Official" videos and stuff produced by companies, etc.
- blynder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the point is never having to leave your resources rather your at work, school or home.
- BryanJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a nice new feature actually...
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also works from Google docs:
http://docs.google.com/data/contacts - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea it did.....

It's called "mutually assured competition." Where one owner owns the two companies with the largest marketshare, under different brands, they can control the whole market while creating the illusion they are not a near-monopoly. It's a great way to keep a second-place competitor from overtaking you. Relegating them to third makes it very difficult for them to crawl up the market share ladder and replace you as number one. - emehrkay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The one thing gmail needs, and not the calendar, is notes. I just emailed myself something just so that i could have it later.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like anyone wanting to use this will need a GMail account, which would be more trouble to set up the first time than just typing in those emails.
- sandersons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a great news. I will be using it as I have an account in Gmail. But what about those who don't have an account? Will they have to beg for an invitation?
- OldYorkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd be grateful if Google could make its mail service work correctly. Mine has been unusable for about 50 per cent of this weekend!
- anachronoks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Do we have to have a front page headline every time Google comes out with a new boring feature?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"This integration across applications is what freaks me out about Google: do you really want your business email account tied to your entertainment time on video sites?" via mashable
http://mashable.com/2006/12/30/amvona-720%c2%b0-apple-sued-google-video-feature-2007-predictions/
I don't. But I'm not sure about this being an actual drawback like they (mashable) say. - haochi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1As a matter of fact, there's a BIG bug in this feature that can cause a huge issue - your email address and your friends - all goes to SPAMMERS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1*very offtopic* but i wonder why this article hits front page, but the real saddam hanging video, doesn't
- Jassman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2And Google still doesn't have its own instant messenger client? It seems that this would be the next logical step.
