- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Perhaps there's _a_ future in video, but video it not the future of Google.
- raz3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22What I particularly like about Google video is the option to download the video, which is often of substantially better quality than all these You-Tube clones. The rest of the features are in line with the rest.
I will also add that the downloaded videos will play on any DivX-ready home DVD player. - yonah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14What I like about google video, is that the videos resize according to screen resolution/size. The youtube-movies are too small, and I almost never bother going fullscreen with any of them anyway. But on the other hand, I think google video lacks the whole community-feeling that is very attractive to many.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Google video is not the future of google but it is a big weapon in its arsenal. Google has the muscle to crush youtube but youtube has popularity on its side. Only time will tell who will become king of video. My bet is on Google.
- hyukhyuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@bs3arch
I think you mean "fall by the wayside" not "waist-side".
the wayside is the edge of a road, I'm not sure that waist-side means anything – other than perhaps the side of your waist. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Google + MySpace + Youtube + Digg = Crazy Town 2010
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Interesting.
I just took at look at youtube's HTML source. I couldn't stop laughing - they have HTML comments saying "begin google ad code" "end google ad code".. and between those comments they have doubleclick ad code.
Like they switched away from google adsense so fast they forgot the comments. This goes back to what I've always said. Why the hell are you using adsense if you know google will eventually compete with you? Congratulations, you're giving a competitor all of your business intelligence.
Not that you can stop google, but you probably shouldn't help them stomp on you.
Now google links to google video from their homepage, saying in essence "goodbye youtube, oh, and thank you for those impressions and clicks! You're right, that traffic _is_ valuable!"
Youtube deserves to be pummeled by google, using adsense is usually a stupid idea. Short term thinking gets you nowhere. Adsense is the arm of google that allows them to know which areas of the market they should enter, so don't be surprised when google eats you up your lucrative website. - kwoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That would also be an easy way to get into antitrust lawsuits like Microsoft's.
- doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10If Google video is the future of Google, then I'm sorry to say but the future's not good...
- CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7mmm, i guess youtube is just friendlier for killing time
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Agreed. I remember downloading Kintaro Walks Japan, and feeling like "this isn't right" that I could download a whole movie onto my iPod and sit back and watch other downloads all night. Unlike Youtube, and I can... without the aid of tools and other often problematic accoutrement... download stuff and hit the road. Just... Nice.
- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because newsgroups are such a more attractive, buzzworthy, "web 2.0" feature as compared to say, videos.
Most people read newsgroups through newsgroup readers, those who don't, well, it's not that hard to find (more>>, even more >>) - bogaboga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5When are we gonna have video controls on Google Video? Sometimes, the videos are too dark and need some adjustment like light & contrast in order to be viewed properly. Is this feature possible in flash videos? I do not see it on any other site offering flash videos.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4google video has come along way in no time at al. but i still perfer my youtube.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah cause when I'm at work, searching for technical information, I'd want to have to watch some stupid video and wait for the retard on the other end of the camera to eventually get to the keywords I'm looking for. 20 minutes later I realize that it's not going to help.
video being the future of google is like TV being the future of garbage collection. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nope, cause nobody used it. Which is why it was removed.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1where do they use adsense, I can't find an instance right now.
At any rate, to think this won't affect youtube is naive, you upload your video to video.google.com or youtube.com. They compete. So google competes against one of its customers. - OGla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Video is the future of the Internet. Plain and simple. How do most people prefer to communicate? How do most people prefer to take in entertainment and information? As live as possible. Video is the closest we come to real life when it comes to experiencing things. So as the bandwidth increases, the Internet will become more and more videolized. Also with more people getting access to cameras and software like iMovie the content will become more advanced. Just watch and see. The next step for google will be to analyze the video with video recognition software and index it automatically.
- Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I usually think the videos look crap at fullscreen, they're just nice for me at double size.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google doesn't do evil. I think they realize that bad publicity is worse than a product not being as popular.
- Conale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me or is the site down?
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Did anyone notice Google removed Groups tab from its home page?
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@j4mm/mporcheron
It's always great to watch two people argue. It's even better when neither one can write a single, coherent sentence. - kilps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I just mute the video (by turning down the volume in the player) and then just wait for it to load
the pains of dialup... - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1Youtube isn't going to be affected that much. one thing i've noticed is people (non-geeks) like simple names and addresses: youtube.com, multimap.com (major eu mapping site), ebay. they don't like video.google.com, maps.google.com, base.google.com. that's why they don't do as well. it's the same for windows live and their subdomains.
[google] maps has been on the homepage for a while now and yet people still print directions of theaa.com or rac.com. people see google as search and that's it, google is trying to break out of that mold and it needs to do a bit more to do so. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1a) what's with the blank line above and below your comment?
b) What does Google do that's like Microsoft? Last time i checked Google don't tie you into long-term agreements, when has Google fixed a security bug for people who pay extra monthly and fixed it later for those who don't?
c) Rip of who's GUI, Youtube looks nothing like Google Video
d) YouTube is the largest video site on the web, not Google Video therefore Google is not squashing anyone - tomofumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In my mind, google used to means innovation, but now they just copy youtube, it looks like their bright idea starts declining.
- Sirtus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, Google has been coming out with alot of things latley... What next for Google?
- roywaits, on 02/02/2008, -0/+0I disagree, as web-cams become more standard I think people would rather send a video message than an email. Connections will get faster and video files will get smaller, and there it is...
I agree with you that YouTube and GoogleVideo are filled with too much crap, but that's what happens when the world can post. Did you catch any of the free kung fu movies on Google Video's "free today" last month? That's where it's gold. And where is should go - full length TV & movies. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1also, YouTube still uses AdSense
- e68895f, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0maybe google should get their service working first ?
I have had my video in "processing" mode for days now. Youtube added the video instantly... - TimothyStickles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Video isn't the future of the internet. People aren't going to communicate via video over the internet. Communicating through video is a pain in the ass - people aren't going to start recording themselves and editing and publishing to YouTube or Google Video instead of typing an email.
Sites like Google Video and YouTube are already becoming stale. Quality content is few and far-between and the sites have become irritating to wade through since the majority of content is 14 seconds of morons lip syncing to a camera they sat sideways on their couch.
The reality is that this trend will play itself out and people will eventually lose interest and move on. The Internet's role in video will be as a delivery medium for traditional viewing on televisions (i.e. downloading films, etc). As a recent study showed - there is little interest, even among very young viewers, in watching video on gadgets. It's a vapor-industry.
What we have here is a dotcom-bubble-like blindness causing companies to dump insane amounts of money into video because they think it's going to be the NEXT BIG THING. They'll lose their money, deflate, the economy will pay, jobs will be lost and the entire cycle will begin again.
The morons have the money and they listen to anyone who whispers in their ear. Sadly, the whisperers are morons too. - j4mm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0
The "new" google video (as displayed in the article) looks like a pretty good clone of youtube's. Its a pretty similar layout and carbon copy functionality.
The article goes on to talk about google leveraging its dominate search position and the profiling of you as a user through your search history, all to target video ads to you.
>>Last time i checked Google don't tie you into long-term agreements
Google's 2038 cookie (possibly). - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Future of google is to organize the worlds information and make it easy to find
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Google video is really slow for some reason...... half the time it doesn't even load the video at all! I need to refresh the page a few times and it might work.
Normally I just use youtube... smaller video but it's more trustworthy. - tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1smaller video? you can can full screen! same goes for google video. hope that helps.
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The future of Google is video. The future of Google has already arrived; it is caled YouTube!
- Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Commenting is there, and it works, although it is filled with spammers.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Every time I goto Google video I use the video scrollbar and try to scroll the page down to read the comments on the video. What the hell Google? Add commenting!
- lisalee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I don't think video is the future of Google.
- gio92, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The easiest way for google to win this battle is to stop linking, referencing or showing results related to YouTube.
- j4mm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0
Google operate more and more like microsoft every day.
Rip off GUIs & Use their market position to squash competition. - tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1i see
- gio92, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Google can cripple YouTube considerably by failing to return search results or advertising relating to YouTube
- an0n1m0us, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2google video is *****
with YouTube I can pause it and wait for the download, then view uninterupted
trying the same in google does not work well - bdude, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Veoh (www.veoh.com) also lets you do that
- bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3I don't know man, only so much content is available in text. If Google Video Ads can one day bring a resurgence in television advertising which is expected to fall to the waist-side in a few years due to the spread of DVR, they will conquer the cable/video/TV/demand/movie advertising space, and index all of that stuff in the meantime. Perhaps _a_major_future or _the_direction_of :)
