- jobeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13if it's anthing like Google Video, they're doomed
- SATURN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Like Kevin Rose said, they better hire some freaking graphic designers. Especially if they want to compete with Apple.
- Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't believe this for a second.
Same thing with Google OS.
When they get out of the realm of advertisements and the various website services they have, they're not good designers people. Please understand this.
I'm sure Google OS would be the worst Os on the market. Same thing with this. Are you going to dump Itunes for Google video and hook your ipod up to that?
Will you then take the other hundreds of millions of people who use itunes as well?
Come on man don't believe every websites.
Google needs to finish their damn calendar program and get Google Analytics back up and running. - TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They better include a good search function, cause I want to find what I'm lookin' for dangit!
- marreka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unless Google allows people to take music with them on the road in devices such as the iPod, it's probably not going to do so well. If they require internet access like Google Video, then thats just the end.
Apple's advantage is a large selection playable on the world's most popular music player. - dpierce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Usability Analaysts are interns at Google. See http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/answer.py?answer=25521

I don't know about purchased videos (Google's not offering anything I want at the moment), but when you view a free video on Google Video, you have the option to save the movie to your hard drive on the right - and one of the options is to save it in an iPod compatible format (they have a PSP compatible format too). - peepott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny thing how now that google starts to branch out = their image of sellout-ness goes hand in hand. Now that they're no longer "teh indie" or whatever most perceive as anti-corporate-*****(and I'm sure the uber-indie people said this happened years ago, before I was born), they're free targets for the haters. I love how everyone hugs onto the nuts of Kevin Rose. Yes google! Listen to the forum tards because they have made out so much better than you with their cutting edge ideas and implementations!
- vermin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3take kevin rose's advice. HIRE A USABILITY EXPERT and GRAPHIC DESIGNER, jesus christ.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...plus there's NO way I'd trust google with my financial information - they already scare me enough..."
Trust me, they already have your financial information. Muahaha...hahaha...HAHAHAHA!!! *coughs* ...hehehehe... - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google needs to just settle down and start focusing. They've said for years that search is such a large, unanswered question (and still remains as such), and I think they should start focusing more energy on that. Yes, I'm sure they're doing a lot of work on it anyway, but you get to the point where you have to start wondering what the heck Google's starting to do. There seems to be a new story every day about some new market Google's jumping into, and each time they seem to distance themselves away from their core business of what they do well. Google Video is a good example of how this broad attack is failing. Check out Google Pack, too. I thought I read something about Google doing a spyware thing with Sun too, perhaps? (I didn't read that article so I hardly know the gist of it.)
Regardless though... I think Google might be slowly moving away from an ideal position. It used to be that whatever they touched was gold (Search, Gmail, News, etc.), but their late releases with the exception of Analytics - which is horribly underdeveloped and needed more technical support and resources - have been a bit off (Video, GTalk, Pack, etc.) They could always come out on top, of course, but I think it's cause to worry personally. - andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google is sticking their head into to many things; one day it's gonna get stuck.
- kderby2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hear Google's going to come up with cold fusion.
I hear Google's working on a light-speed transportation system.
I hear Google's working on a car that runs on baked beans.
Who cares. Once they actually release something into alpha/beta, let's talk about it.
No digg. - AndrewMayne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine if you could search for a song on Google and then it could provide you with a link to iTunes, Yahoo and Amazon and then Google could get a kickback from any one of those clicks and get a piece of everyones pie. Wait a second, they're already doing that. Do these analysts actually use the interweby thingy?
- BillyBobMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems unlikely to me, given the failure of iTunes competitors to date. Until consumers stop buying iPods there is little chance of anyone breaking the iTunes stranglehold. And without any even remotely compelling devices challenging the iPod (come on, have you seen that Dell DJ thingie?), it just ain't happening any time soon. Google just got punched in the nose with their horribly amateur video site, I doubt they want to take on the iTunes machine right now. But maybe they really are that stupid. We'll have to wait and see.
- gemalynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It better have a nice interface. You'd think it might have good search features too, like searches for lyrics and similar artists.
Why copy the word "tunes"? I think they should call it Google Rock! Like Fraggle Rock. - lmarso, on 04/16/2009, -0/+0I hope it will be as well considered and designed as Google Video. ROFL.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Yeah, but Google Video has a monopoly on the all-important Charlie Rose/MacGyver demographic (courtesy of some poster on Engadget...made me laugh). Does iTunes? No! I mean, when you team up the power of Charlie Rose with MacGyver, not even the legendary Chuck Norris - or Ricky Kang for that matter - can stop them with his fists of steel and his moustache of justice. Hell, not even the plucked first chest hairs of Rick Shroeder or Scott Baio could render such potency impotent. - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AllOfMp3 allows me to encode it to any format and bitrate I want, if google did this I would consider switching
- mliving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Considering how Google screwed up with their "videos" launch I'm not holding my breath for a stellar "audio" launch.
Google needs to return to their tried and true practice of launch products on Google time not investor time. - camtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iTunes & gTunes
- cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With so many companies in this are - whywould it make sense? One of the reasons iTunes is popular is because of the iPod. I cant imagine Google doing any better than any of the others unless it offers more freedom from DRM.
- Alistair651, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Scenario:
"Google Tunes" & Google Video using a subscription-based model for legal media sharing (hence interest in Napster). I doubt they'll tackle DRM in it's current form due to vast contractual complexities in the industry and yeah, I don't see any Google Mp3 players out there. Besides, it would be tough to compete with Apple at this stage...even if you're Google. Instead, I think Google are going after an entirely different market with this and one which Apple do not have access to despite their R&D into it thus far. What on earth am I on about? The mobile / wireless segments. Why? Because although Motorola & Apple created a mobile phone which supports iTunes, the storage space is non-existent as the devices' communications hardware just doesn't allow space for a big hard drive.
Now, Google have recently been partnering with mobile device manufacturers incl. Motorola...aparently to make Google search pages a default homepage for devices "connected" to the internet...yeah, but I don't think they told us everything here...storage space isn't a problem for Google customers who use GMail (2GB+) so I'm speculating that the Google free WiFi project (eg San Fran) is related in that Google may allow (through GMail & google video &
google tunes) a subscription based service for access to all indexed audio & video which users will then be able to store free of charge in GMail (or similar) and stream the media through a free wireless internet connection to their mobile devices. This would solve the storage issue but it doesnt warrant the investment into R&D...Google would actually need an additional revenue stream to roll this out...something like Adsense & Adwords which would entice the publc to be more involved. If you take note of the Google Video user agreement, you'll see that for ANY videos you create or have the rights to, which are then used commercially by either Google or Google customers, Google will pay you 30% of the $ value they receive so Google Tunes could end up following a similar model. - rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for the record...

thats what I mean! - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no offense to google or anything, i love google, but i really think its too late for google. Apple has a deathgrip on the mp3 player/store market, and it won't be letting go any time soon.
- KicktheDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, people, and interface doesn't have to be flashy and cutting edge to be usable...
- JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lame
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do people constantly just sit around and imagine ways to suck off Kevin Rose.
the first comments are ridiculus - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Re: they need graphic designers. Coctco is a good example. Not a THOUGHT goes into their displays. They rip open some boxes and people dive in because of the low prices. Americans are super price conscious on most things. Except Hummers, so who knows... Also google probably doesn't have much experience dealing with music companies.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
This is ridiculous. Instead of wasting money on this project, if Google wants to get into music, they should partner with Apple on iTunes. Offer to pay the cost of porting iTunes and QuickTime over to a specified Linux distribution. Take its cut of users it directs to iTunes.
Anything less than this only benefits Microsoft by reducing iTunes market share. And anything that helps Microsoft is detrimental to Google in the long term.
Buying into iTunes would be a smart longterm defensive move, just as the acquisition of the 5% stake in AOL was, no matter how many wannabe 1337ers online (and especially on Digg, Slashdot, and Engadget) want to diss AOL.
As for commercial Google Video, its pathetic. While I applaud them for supporting underdog Divx, the whole experience is shoddy and reminds me of something that one would see during the days of Netscape Navigator 2.0. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It wouldn't supprise me if they made it 100% in the browser, similar to what sites like http://www.audiri.com are doing. That was there is no software to download, you can just go to a page, and it will save your playlist and let you reorder it and all of that stuff all from the browser.
- actionjackson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless Google has some secret deal with Apple, to be the first alternative music download service to share Apple's DRM, this seems like a move doomed for failure. Apple has refused to allow any other devices (other than the hugely successful ROKR) and any other download services to use the DRM and as a byproduct, they have overwhelming market share on both music purchases online as well as the pmp's (i.e. the iPod). Why would they change for Google's sake? Good question. It could be proposed that there will be no DRM on Google's service, but that's just preposterous. If that were the case, then it would require that they sell only songs that are not affiliated with RIAA labels. I'm surprised that this kind of speculation on the business world, with no offer of evidence, would make it to the likes of FORBES. If this were to happen, with any intention of being successful, there would have to be some kind of earth shattering breakthrough attached to it, IMO.
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah and if it's anything like Google's excuse for a video store... it's doomed to failure.
- dgillett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm all for Google Tunes and Google Video, if only they could personalize it so I could add "channels" to my "Google Page". Once I start adding selected content then Google could examine my choices and build a library, based any my tastes, as long as I could thumbs up or thumbs down occasionally when they get it wrong. www.pandora.com does a pretty good job of this for audio and they have a nice GUI. Hmm "maybe a good acquisition target for Google.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"why do people hate google video?"
Because it sucks goats ass. - tawker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DUPE! - I posted this 8 horus ago and it was marked as lame. What is with the community!
- crazaalex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gTunes?
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sell now before it's too late!
- cheebsmoker44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If google tunes is anything like gmail or google search, they're in big trouble. I'm tired of google copying apple, microsoft, and dogpile. All google cares about is profits and they'll to anything to get more money. The government needs to regulate the amount of money they can make.
- soulcages01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why do you people keep posting all of these Google predictions? they are nothing but unsubstantiated rumors.
- bfos7215, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anything, ANYTHING, other than iTunes would be a massive improvement if you could use it with your iPod.
iTunes is the most bloated, resource intensive, poorly written software I have on my computer. - tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0theres a service that i use with much better speed and quality, did i mention its completely free? its called bittorrent ladies and gentlemen
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0blah!
- Billistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why do people hate google video? I love it
- CaptainMal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't be worse than iTunes, that DRM proprietary format POS.
Someone should copy the iTunes functionality except with some decent format options. - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bla bla bla
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It doesn't matter at all unless it is somehow compatible with an iPod. The reason iTunes is so massive is that it is the only place to go for legal online downloads that work with the iPod, and as much as it pisses off so many anti-apple nerds, the iPod has a stranglehold on the MP3 player market. 99% of people either don't even know what an MP3 player is (they just know what iPods are for, not what they technically are) or wouldn't want one that wasn't an iPod. So making an online music service that doesn't work with the iPod means you are immediately dismissing most of your customer base. And I don't see Apple letting Google use it's DRM, nor Google selling non-DRMed mp3's on their site anytime soon. For now Apple has the market in it's pocket and are the only game in town for a huge majority of mp3 player owners. But thankfully they aren't horribly money grubbing, and are still charging fairly (and fighting against the record companies wishes in order to keep doing so). Imagine the horrible service and prices that you'd get if someone like Microsoft was in that position. They would have caved in to the record companies instantly and charged through the A-NUS for songs. Of course they would have never done something as prescient as starting the iTMS anyway. If so then they would have beat apple to it, or at least done something like it around the same time, and not been feebly stumbling into it years later, as they are now.
- Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@mistshadow2k4
You do know allofmp3.com is barely legal in russia, and completely illegal in the US right?
just in case you thought you were doing something legal. - dickyducky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0will be as lame as google video, playable only on google media player (software)
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0as far as I know... the best graphic/interface artists I know, don't qualify on google:
http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/answer.py?answer=25518&query=designer&topic=0&type=designer
- Solid academic background in human-computer interaction or related field
- Excellent HTML skills, knowledge of JavaScript for rapid prototyping a plus
- Aptitude for leadership, communication and teamwork
http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/answer.py?answer=28869&query=designer&topic=0&type=designer
- BA or BS degree.
- Advanced skill in Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The more skilled artist I know, the less they qualify! lol
Solid academic background in human-computer interaction or related field,Word, Excel, POWERPOINT!!!! LOL
The most obvious missing requirement, PORTFOLIO!
I like google, but they really need true artist... the ones that usually are more busy drawing then caring for their lives... -
