- Butzer, on 06/14/2008, -5/+361when the hell is google just going to come out as their own nation wide wireless isp?
- elvenrunelord, on 06/13/2008, -22/+341Good for them. So when is google going to sacrifice us all.....no one can be that good and not have an agenda......
- otis12, on 06/14/2008, -9/+256Google is on our side
- fr0ng, on 06/14/2008, -8/+221I want to have Google's babies.
- GordonClass, on 06/15/2008, -7/+197Problem is most people using a computer won't know or care when ISP's throttle.
- swabfalling, on 06/14/2008, -0/+141Pure, unadulterated awesome.
- inactive, on 06/14/2008, -0/+128I guarantee ISPs will begin lying to non-tech savvy customers when they call to question them. Google should make the results clear on Google.com. Something along the lines of "[ISP] is tampering with your connection. Support net-neutrality at www.blablabla.org. Your isp is lying if they tell you otherwise."
- icndvl, on 06/15/2008, -7/+134Everyone click on a google ad right now!
- Nitrodist88, on 06/15/2008, -1/+109Google already has a vested interest in keeping the internet neutral because people are freely choosing to use Google over MSN/Yahoo/etc. If the "tiered" internet idea were to come to fruition then ISPs would be able to give Google less bandwidth over competitors based on pretty much anything, be it MSN paying them to not give Google as much, vice versa or any other number of permutations.
The idea of ISPs throttling their clients for using certain applications is horrible for users and providers of these applications. The only people benefiting from throttling would be the ISPs (less bandwidth costs) and media companies (potentially less infringement of their goods). Yes, the end users benefit in the end by their networks not being used too much, but perhaps the ISPs shouldn't have oversold their bandwidth, hmm? - eighties, on 06/14/2008, -1/+94"Don't be evil". We're looking at YOU, Bell/Comcast!
- danielsamuels, on 06/15/2008, -4/+88Google - ***** YEAH!
- OpCzar, on 06/15/2008, -4/+75THEIR
- digitalpencil, on 06/15/2008, -1/+69I can picture them now.. little googlers and googlets crawling around the web, examining meta data.
Brings a tear to my eye... ;) - saWgurr, on 06/14/2008, -7/+63seriously, theyve already monopolized the internet,
and if the cable companies start limiting our bandwidth....googles gonna own every other internet company out there period. - bigwophh, on 06/13/2008, -11/+62Time will tell. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
- fusion2k5, on 06/15/2008, -3/+53Google may one day enslave us all but today I love them :)
- inactive, on 06/15/2008, -1/+49google is like batman, we'll never have to thank them
- m60dude5, on 06/15/2008, -3/+44Google loves us all. I'm not kidding.
- shaydwyrm, on 06/15/2008, -2/+42One day google will die for all our sins.
- smacksaw, on 06/14/2008, -15/+53Maybe there agenda is to be good?
- sabroskie, on 06/15/2008, -0/+36The companies that are trying to destroy net neutrality are against the very thing that makes Google successful. Without net neutrality, the smaller websites would diminish which would leave no use for search engines and such. So, in short, Google is only doing this to support themselves. More power to them though, because we benefit off of it too!
- c0baltfish, on 06/15/2008, -1/+36If I saw Batman I would thank him.
- GeekyGerge, on 06/15/2008, -0/+33*Sigh*
- Virtaaj, on 06/15/2008, -6/+38BEST. GOOGLE PRODUCT. YET!!!!!
- OpCzar, on 06/15/2008, -3/+31Err, I already know that my ISP is throttling me.Court said it was ok for Bell to do so. The tool won't help much - even if it is featured on the front page of Google. When non-techy customers call in to ask the throttle removed, they'll just be reminded that it's just a measure against PIRATES and doesn't affect them in any way.
- smacksaw, on 06/14/2008, -2/+26I want you to raise them as Unitarians so that they will support net neutrality for all.
- CDRrules, on 06/14/2008, -1/+25Contrary to what the major ISP's would have you believe, bittorrent is not actually the biggest bandwidth hog. A report (linked here: http://gigaom.com/2008/04/22/shocking-new-facts-ab ... suggests that actually streaming video such as YouTube takes up most of the bandwidth during peak hours. However, P2P gets most of the negative attention from ISP's and media executives. So the question is Why are the ISP's singling out bittorrent to throttle?
- Paramnesia, on 06/15/2008, -2/+25Thank You, Google.
- jessenoob, on 06/15/2008, -2/+25Less seeders than there are peers?
- BIOHazard87, on 06/15/2008, -6/+29Can I make babies with Google?
- DeadElephant, on 06/15/2008, -0/+21Yeah, only I enjoy their products.
- keyforce, on 06/15/2008, -1/+23Since when have ISP's been honest with anyone, tech savvy or not?
Even when confronted with the evidence of their throttling, they continued to deny it. As long as they have an effective monopoly they don't care. They've got us by the balls until more providers start to compete legitimately or more customers start to complain with their wallets. - pintomp3, on 06/15/2008, -0/+22they already started their propaganda.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPIYxtjLFeI - Cglass, on 06/15/2008, -8/+27Don't digg him down, he's absolutely correct.
- shoook, on 06/15/2008, -1/+20It really is only a matter of time before Google branches out and becomes an ISP. At that point it will be safe to say they are the Microsoft of the internet age.
- junkwheel, on 06/15/2008, -0/+19Google helped my uncle paint his utility room.
By providing relevant search results of course. - Jacolyte, on 06/15/2008, -0/+19Yes, they've adopted the, "DON'T ***** your customers over", strategy. It's really playing out nicely I think.
- philhatesyou, on 06/15/2008, -1/+19Good thing then that they don't have absolute power, eh?
- Erkie, on 06/15/2008, -0/+18Yes! Go to my site and click on an ad! QUICKLY! Pay your support to me... err.. Google!
- benjp2k1, on 06/15/2008, -0/+17Don't forget Rogers
- Dev17, on 06/15/2008, -1/+17Arming customers with a bit of education will be great for net neutrality.
- Ymeg, on 06/15/2008, -2/+18Does bandwidth really cost that much?
- Zowsky, on 06/15/2008, -0/+16Google should just create their own ISP
- WilliamAdama, on 06/15/2008, -0/+16I wish Google was an ISP, I'd buy their service in a heart beat.
- philhatesyou, on 06/15/2008, -2/+17Do you even know the definition of monopoly? I'll give you a hint here, barriers to market entry for potential competitors is one of the key components, and that doesn't exist here. Come back when you know what the ***** you're talking about.
- ssj2119, on 06/15/2008, -1/+16And thats a good thing. Rather Google than AT&T or someother phone company. I say Google-net worldwide ISP please, k thanks
- ProKid, on 06/15/2008, -1/+16Google Bandwidth Throttle Detector Beta
- mCanada, on 06/14/2008, -1/+15This is a good first step, I think something to supplant bittorrent would be a better goal. A set of protocols and applications that are as efficient at BT, but are fundamentally untouchable by Big Telco and Big Government. Perhaps something that if the Telco's monkeyed with, they would get burned in the process. Hmm...
- pintomp3, on 06/15/2008, -4/+17we need more tech-friendly politicians who understand the need to keep the internet neutral, starting with the next president:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-9864581-38.html - monoa, on 06/15/2008, -10/+23It's hard to believe, but what if the company is run by genuinely decent people? Same as it's hard for many to believe that a politician can be honest, decent and genuine - Barack Obama, perhaps?
Google would benefit from a non-neutral 'net. They have more muscle than any other internet company so they could position themselves to benefit from it more than anyone else.
Talking of Barack, his talk at Google shows that he is committed to net neutrality and that gets a very warm reception from the Google team - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4yVlPqeZwo -
