- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why link to beta news with such a IMO short article when you can point out the details from the source here?: http://www.google.com/talk/developer.html#service
- evanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0umm does anyone actually use Earthlink, Gizmo Project, Tiscali, Netease, Chikka, MediaRing or others?
- jaknet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh for the day MSN opens it's closed policy and allows connections to other IM clients.rnrnNot a fan of MSN..... but most people I know use it :-((( and trying to get everyone to change just ain't going to happen. .......and having to have different IM running at once is just stupidrnrnCan you imagine if phone companys did this and would not allow you to call someone on a different service.

When was the last time you heard Leo Laporte say he was going to continue using Skype? Or nOrton? They both are now using Gizmo Project. Leo swears by it over Skype. I recall maybe Rose said something good about it too, but I dont want to be branded as a BrokeBackRosie. - arnthorsnaer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kudos to Google.
If the biggest players in this field don't grow up and interop their IM services the (shudder) government will have to regulate it.
Email & Telephony is interop, IM and VOIP will be interop. The only question is if the players like Microsoft will stop acting like 5 year olds and interop or if "uncle sam" has to administer some spankings. - acusticthoughts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do remember hearing how Google's agreement with AOL Time Warner included them making Google Talk compatible with AIM. I know MS won't easily allow ti to happen...but trillian does OK with it so I'm sure Google can handle it. ICQ will be pulled in easily along with AIm as AOL owns them...and then Yahoo...I don't know how Yahoo/MS will react to the Google land grab.
Ode to competition! - conigs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great. My biggest complaint about Talk when it first came out is that it ignored the XMPP component that made Jabber great. Hopefully this will do to IM what was done with e-mail a long time ago....
For those of you who don't remember, just because you had an e-mail account didn't mean you could e-mail anyone. You needed different addresses all over the place.
Now we just need to get more people running jabber servers. It would be nice to hand out one address/screen name instead of having AIM+Jabber+MSN+Yahoo, etc.
And yes, I'm aware of projects like GAIM and AdiumX, but I'd much rather have federation. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0billventiger: They just mentioned those as possibles, what they actually did was open it up to be able to talk to any Jabber service. And anybody with a domain can run a jabber server for their domains users.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just one more step close to full compatability with all IM clients! OOHRAH!
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That last part in my previous post was sarcasm BTW.
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think that google talk is a piece of crap. I like the minimal interface, and yes, I do use Gizmo also. I just *love* how Windows assumes that you want to have MSN messenger running after a nice fresh install and sticks it in the tray for you.
- Tanpreet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0isnt this old news?
- MJensen39, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to agree with the majority of people. Google why do you keep trying?
- billventiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My thoughts exactly evanm, why link to such osbscure ims?
- xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NiX0n, Gaim's lead developer actually got hired by Google a couple of months ago.

And Trillian is Jabber-compliant how? - Tali, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"umm does anyone actually use Earthlink, Gizmo Project, Tiscali, Netease, Chikka, MediaRing or others?"
exactly
the first thing i thought was "Great. I've never even heard of some of those" - cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google talk? whats google talk? I know. It's a piece of ***** like google pak. Sorry google. you guys suck.
- captainjy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who freakin' cares!?!?! Google Talk sux ballz!
- mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd think about using Google Talk if the interface could be streamlined a little more for "advanced" users. I don't need a frigging search box in my IM client, thank you, and I'd prefer it if I could make the window and fonts smaller. IM programs do not need to take up half the screen (MSN/Yahoo - I'm looking at you, you ugly, fat, bastards). I'm still running ICQ2002 because I can trim it down (and everybody I know has used it since the day dot).
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes, but if Google is providing an alternative to the current major players in this field your beloved IM clients will only get better to stay ahead of the GoogleCurve.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GAIM is the best
- alexander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0plus a digg user got it working already...

When you pay for it, you can install a flakey at best jabber protocol, the irony is delicious, PAY for an OPEN protocol nice work trillian;
Trillian has major issues with multiple accounts on the same provider, gaim is the multi-protocol client of choice, or miranda or, possibly uni :) trillian is terrible;
Goodwork google, this has made my life easier :) - battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Jees, doesnt anybody know what the G in GAIM stands for? Try: GOOGLE.
