- Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17No company will use simple online web apps as a replacement to Office. Most consumers won't, either.
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Nice find.
- mxpxpx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11this is awesome, i think this is almost better than an online word processor.
i cant wait till you can log onto "google cubicle" and do all your work - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"Edit with others in real time"
Thats nuts. Goodbye Excel, hello Google Spreadsheet! - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I have a very good use for it. Every year, I manage a small vacation get together for me and around 20 friends. We rent a beach house for a week or two and just generally have a good time. However, because people can't all be there on the same day and so forth, there's always a bit of disagreement over how to split the cost of renting the house.
So I created a spreadsheet to track this sort of thing. It basically splits the number of nights everybody stays up and with that and the total rent costs and some minor math, it works out a cost per night for everybody. Stops any disagreements dead. The sheet shows when everybody is staying, how many nights, how much they have paid or still owe, etc, etc.
Only problem is that sharing it is kind of a pain in the ass. Having it online like this and accessible to those people only, that would be just excellent. If it's editable (and the editing capabilities are able to be limited), then I can have people put in their own dates and show them the results in real time. It would be very handy. If I could integrate it with a webpage to gather all our data into one location, well, that would be the best thing ever. :) - b7j0c, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8seems like a toy app. questions: can two users simultaneously edit (and clobber) each other's data? can you encrypt it beyond the reach of google?
seems like if you had serious needs in this area you would just use excel, gnumeric, openoffice etc and keep a versioned and encrypted spreadsheet online.
i am gung-ho wrt online apps, but i just don't see an audience for this - tedwardo2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I doubt Sun had anything to do with this if it imports/exports to .xls but doesn't import/export to .ods
- gurijala, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well sorry for the confusion.. I was suppose to say... "waiting list is available instant signup not active yet"...
- xsnslaine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I really hope that they offer saving to .ODS
I have been actively moving away from the MSoffice formats in favor of the open formats - seek205, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't know but I wish they would support Opera and Safari. Google Calendars doesn't work with Opera either...
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah! Nice catch. Going to http://www.google.com/googlespreadsheets/ just leads to a 404, how were you able to find this?
The spreadsheet app doesn't look like a standalone tool, or a replacement for Microsoft Excel, it looks more like a supplement. Rather than emailing yourself excel files, just upload them into this. Then, if you need to make a quick change, or share it with someone, rather than using another bout of emails to do so, just share it with them using this tool. It looks like it's convienient for that application, but I can't see myself using this to create spreadsheets.
I don't usually deal with Excel spreadsheets anyway, but I'd love to see this done with Word documents! - snoble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Try Camino as a Firefox replacement. It's also gecko (though I'm not certain if it is the exact same version) and it is a lot lighter.
- mxpxpx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6the 404 is not a real one, just text, they do that often
- mikeabundo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Of all the files I hate emailing back and forth, spreadsheets are the worst. I want this.
- MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This looks cool, but it's starting to get a little scary how much information Google has about people.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They Google it. ;)
(or maybe it's just a lot of people with free time who search around for buzz, and a few people within the ranks willing to say something. I dunno.) - SocialPoison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Google isn't just a search engine anymore. Take a look around... they have so many exciting and useful web applications... it's really hard to fault them for putting up an entire office suite (heck... I thank them). I mean... I use gmail as my primary email client... google/ig is my start page... I was giddy when I found out about the calendar.
What's to wonder about? They're providing awesome services for free (aside from text ads). - ddrirc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it really that hard to support Safari and Opera though? I'm a web developer (granted, not a great one), but I've never gotten into any problems where something wouldn't work in both Opera and Safari fine, including ajax. Does it deal with the formatting of the data perhaps?
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4People have got to get over viewing Google as just a company that runs a search engine.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's actually pretty sweet... though I can't see myself using spreadsheets for anything important online...
- psx00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2theone3:
The actual URL will be http://spreadsheets.google.com
I found it by clicking on the supported browsers link on the 3rd page and found the link in the navigation on the left
As of Right now it returns a 404 though :( - kamtsa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am curious, how do people find this stuff ?
- t1c52002, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nah. This is not openoffice at all.
- vogelzang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sign up not active? I was able sign-up with my email address.
- RegisteredUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of you are putting way too much thought into this. Google Spreadsheets isn't meant to replace Excel. It's definitely not for power users that require complex macros or equations. And it's definitely not for people that need a mission critical spreadsheet application. This is a simple spreadsheet app for simple usage. From my observations, the casual Excel user mainly uses spreadsheets to create lists in tabular form, or they use it to create a simple personal budget. This is the target audience for Google Spreadsheets.
Take another look at the screenshot. The sample spreadsheet they show is a game schedule for a little league team. See what I mean? For people that don't need the full power and capabilities of Excel, Google is offering a simple and free alternative.
I'm still going to use Excel for work related stuff. But for personal stuff, I'm going to use Google Spreadsheets. I can access it just about anywhere and I can display/share spreadsheets with family and friends. Still not sure what to use it for? Here are some ideas..
* Catalog and share your music and movie collection
* Record your car gas mileage/usage
* Track your daily spending
* Keep a training journal for how many miles you walked/jogged/cycled
* Track the money you've raised for your charity or fundraiser event
* Make a note of how many times your boss uses the word "synergy" - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yep,, but if google offered companies to sell them a physical server of their own.. I mean a simple google box with all the tools in it. And you could allow your employees to work remotely while keeping the data at home?
Certainly some companies would like it. - rameshs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hi,
You might want to have a look at Zoho Sheet, an online spreadsheet service which supports collaboration, charting and more.

You already have Writely, where you can upload and edit Word documents ... and wait a minute, Google bought Writely too. - iBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm getting tired of Google supporting everything except Safari.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Camino is built on a much newer Gecko version than Firefox. Problem is that Camino doesn't inlcude "firefox" in its UA so some sites easily overlook it despite it being compatible. I use CamiTools to change the UA to include Firefox and the problems go away
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google Spreadsheets is currently compatible with the following browsers:
- IE 6 (Windows)
- FireFox 1.07+ (Windows, Mac, Linux)
We currently don't support other browsers.
...another typical Google product... - dave_colorado, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3WHOA this is amazing.
Google is definitely going to integrate all of their apps. Calendar, Mail, Spreadsheets, Writely...they have an office suite online.
How exciting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Too bad it doesn't support safari :(. There isn't a good spreadsheet program on OS X (NeoOffice/J is good, but not quite right, and I refuse to buy MS products.). I'd use the heck out of this if it worked in safari. Firefox freezes from time to time on Mac and has other odd problems. Come on Google, you can do it... hire someone who doesn't use windows all day...
- JonGretar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DabbleDB is much better for that. Actually I stopped using spreadsheets after I got DabbleDB. Check out the video.
http://www.dabbledb.com/ - geekchic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Why is a search engine developing applications ? I wonder about Google at times, and this is one of them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well organized information too. Much of the overhead for sifting through the info. is already done.
- docsnavely, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is great for my work! I can make the leave and liberty schedule for all to see.
I signed up. - arnthorsnaer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dabbledb is a cool service, but probably competing with for a diffrent market then simple spreadsheets...
"normal users" seem to have a hard time comprehending how to structure their data the way dabbledb requires..
check out dabbledb if you need to handle data relationally easily and are tired of copy/pasting data around your spreadsheet - SWiG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish this would have been around while planning my wedding. Updating guest lists and addresses by emailing out spreadsheets to be filled out was a pain. Then they would come back partially filled out with the rest "to be filled out later". Addresses would come trickling in and then the spreadsheets had to be sent out again for confirmation. This would have made the process 10x easier.
- go3media, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously the core money microsoft is from business's ordering corporate additions of their products. However if google can pursuad the average joe he doesn't need ms office and starts being able to provide business's with their own google server with all this jazz on for their personal use.. then i see microsoft loosing a large amount of money or atleast feel threatened enough to change their pricing plan..
Competition is ONLY a good thing.. don't see why anyone is complaining - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As I said with other google projects... there will be many many unhappy people when the government forces google to give up all it's clean and already organized information about each and every one of it's users.
I still wonder if the government hasn't been in bed with Google from the beginning. Before throwing all your personal formatted/organized info on Google's servers, think twice. - kazzyD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those interested, here are screenshots of Google Spreadsheets being used (including a converted Excel file):
http://digg.com/software/Screenshots_of_Google_Spreadsheets_in_Action - Hender, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't see graphing on the feature list ... hopefully they'll add that eventually. Graphing is confusing in Excel, to the point where it actually has to be taught in schools for people to get it. I'd like to see Google do it properly.
- CosmicJustice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Obviously Google is using its dominance in "Web Searching" to extend its unfair monopoly into software applications. I think the DOJ should force them to un-bundle their apps from the web. They should be forced to distribute their apps on CD or even better, on paper tape. How else are small web-app companies going to compete?
- timalmond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see where Otto is coming from.
The key thing is not just that it's shared, but it's completely managed for you. The alternative would be to have an FTP space with passwords, and then your friends log in, download, edit and then have to save back. Someone's going to always forget to save back until sometime after 3 other people have made changes and then, of course, those changes are lost.
People mailing around spreadsheets is a version control PITA too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They do, it's called Google Mini
http://www.googlestore.com/appliance/product.asp?catid=3 - SocialPoison, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6What? No powerpoint!?! I'm selling my google stock.
/sarcasm - Dan100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Otto: just put your file on box.net and publically share it. If your friends don't have Excel they can use the Viewer to look at it.
