- FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Google needs to figure out how to make a program that works with NOD32.
- Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just make it auto-hide and calm down about the size.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2konfabulator is ok but it's a memory hog and system resources hog
- L0rdDiabl0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's simple, and ugly compared to the beautiful widgets of Konfabulator, but it's very practical and doesn't take too much space.
- sankethkatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i want it for linux
- FrogofTime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One more step towards GoogleOS
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting, but will it be a huge failure like web accelerator?
- digiital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can hide side bar, Google isn't that stupid to have it locked.
- GuyNextDoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Google Desktop for local searching, simply because it has the taskbar searchbox. This is unlike Yahoo's Desktop search that requires you to double-click a popup window to search (which for some reason was a pain in the arse to get to actually "pop up"). Yahoo trumped google desktop because of the reductive search method used (filter as you type), but Google Desktop trumped yahoo with a simple interface and the "deskbar" box that could remain in you taskbar (or float on your desktop somewhere) with hotkey access. GD 2.0 offers a ton of great new features that I think make it slip past Yahoo X1 with this incarnation. It now does reductive searching and pops up a "quick pick" box of rsults as you type - this is simlair to Mac's "Spotlight" feature - which is pretty dern spiffy. They also have a toolbar for Outlook now, that allows quick and easy searching for your email (vastly better than the built in "find" utility!).
Sidebar is an interesting feature, but I am not quite sure I will end up using it much. We'll have to see as I continue playing around with the program. The memory footprint between sidebar open and taskbar open (sidebar minimized) is nill - they both take up about 20MB on my system.
As a note, let's quit saying "this is a bad implementation of Spotlight" or "second rate spotlight" - these comments are dumb - windows users do not have access to these utlities! We all know you are just trolling as Mac lovers touting the greatness of your OS. Google Desktop 2.0 is a pretty good upgrade that adds some great improvements over it's predecessor, and also makes it a pretty great desktop search solution for Windows users. - cheese06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha konfabulator is a joke. its a memory/resource hog. sure its got the looks but its just not practicle. i'd like information to be condensed. im not saying that this sidebar is any better. sometimes simplicity is better. thus far i like the sidebar, however, they should make it so the animation can be turned off. it wastes time in the long run.
- fragnificent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its cool but so unnecessary
- brianb722, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is this a knockoff of Spotlight? Google Desktop Search was out well before OSX 10.4. And X1 (http://www.x1.com/) was available WAY before that.
- sovereign3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The sidebar unfortunately takes up too much space on the side of your screen. Which is especially annoying whenever you're browsing the web or have some other window open. It's still pretty neat and has plenty to offer. I'm sure Google will make further improvements on it.
- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really need to stop reading comments on diggs. Seems like anything all I read is negative stuff, or I prefer this, etc.
Anyway, I'm not a big fan of sidebars but this is good because of the RSS feeds of whatever. I got photos from flickr, news from digg+endgadget, and there seem to be plug-ins in the making so this is going to be great. - xaph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've a widescreen laptop, and as I've a lot of desktop space, this runs nicely alongside my browser.
- jayknitter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, who is writing the digg plugin for the Google sidebar???
- theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is done in .net and C++ I think. Either way it's fairly exploitable and a big security risk, so don't install anything unless you're sure where it's from.
- BitHammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd be more impressed if it were cross-platform. Google, you must have some Python developers.
- LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i cant use this and desktop search program becuase it isen't compatiple with nod32 the anti virus program that is so freaking lame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
- randallb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google does have Python developers (I know one of them). But I guess they don't work on things like this.
- tofu713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0grrr... won't run on my linux box.
gRRR... won't run on my mac box.
GRRR... *cry* why must google tease me. - Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah,not working with nod32 at all....hopefully nod32 will patch their program asap
- gilsmethod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm really liking my widescreen laptop...hehe
- Akia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the closest thing to SpotLight for Windows (Exclude Vista's which is SLOW and not "instant" as SpotLight. It has a 1-2 second delay before it shows the results on a FRESH install)...
- Libb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is slick, and since I've told Windows to FlyAKite and Macified my system, the white look actually fits right into my desktop perfectly, and acts as my Spotlight replacement. Perfect!
- blockcipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been using it all day, love it. Gonna keep it!
- chriscromp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can download more plugins for Google Sidebar -- http://desktop-plugins.com
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, now lets not all jump on the band wagon.
- Geekpulp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone copy's everyone, and as long as that means better software, I'm happy for it to continue to happen.
- zack97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this rules!!!! i love it.
- bseaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To hell with McAfee, RAM has a beef with it. This thing's a resource hog, at best. I don't like it.
- darrenism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see that Google called RSS "web feeds" on their website ..
- adiosjefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else have 5 GoogleDesktop services running with a grand totoal of 37MB being used?
- GaryK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mork, thanks for your reply. It clearly states on their website it requires IE 5 or greater. I know you can make Fx your default browser in Windows, but are you sure that means Desktop Sidebar won't use IE (i.e., the Trident rendering engine) for tasks within the sidebar itself? Thanks.
~gary. - spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How come it seems to open all links in MSIE when I've got firefox set as my default browser. And yeah, I've set the filetype .htm and .html to "always open" with Firefox. What am I doing wrong here?
- Grimaldi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Google Sidebar is certainly cool (as is Konfabulator, Desktop Sidebar, Apple Dashboard, and, eventually, the Windows Vista Sidebar). However, it is only part of the answer to having a fully integrated "personal intelligence agent" at your disposal. If you want to get a glimpse at the next two or three steps beyond what Google and the like are doing, check out my Mentations product at www.mentations.com. While still an early beta, I hope the intent is clear as to the direction we are taking it! BTW, any constructive criticism is most welcome.
- dontlookdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Google and the sidebar. And you know that Google so cool, that they will actually LISTEN to the complaints that people have about it and will make it even better.
- GhettoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the implementation is great and simple. It autohides very well so it will only pop up if you hover to the side of your screen and want it. It seems to use almost no system resources, which was my main problem with konfabulator and dashboard widgets. It's very "google" in that its simple text instead of flash graphics that are a waste. Why do I need huge transparent icons that eat 20 megs of ram to tell me the weather?
- webagogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't care how cool/ugly it is if it runs like crap. I have avoided Konfabulator and other sidebars like the plague because they chew up RAM like crazy. For those who have installed the deskbar, what is the performance like?
- T-DOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It might be really fugly, but this is what I expect from Google. Something plain, simple, powerful, but not some over bloated resource hog.
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No need for this, as I already have Klipfolio and Konfabulator. Together they do way more than this sidebar, and takes up less room.
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have it, and it rocks! It automatically adds RSS news feeds of commonly viewed websites. I already have digg up there. :)
- Dycacian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They need to add Skinning ability. I want it Dark.. not light. :D Otherwise, the functionality Rocks.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoever said google should buy trillain is ignorant....trillian is awesome with the ichat av skin and real ichat sounds! so what if it's alittle bloated...hardisks come with tons of space so no worry....and if good did buy trillian it would be the death of trillian period...google would make it too simply and featureless for all the noobers wanting plain im clients! Cerulean studios is doing fine and making tons of money...20 bucks for the pro version and tons of skins, plugins and sounds out there. then again if your cheap get the free version
- boogeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The search on this thing freakin rocks!!!
NUFF SAID! - oxigen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it. the only problems I have, you can't change it's opacity, so it blocks my wallpaper... and I like my wallpaper. It needs a digg plugin, and quick! and when you expand an item, they don't stay over other windows. It slides out over, then jumps behind. Pretty damn annoying, you've got to minimize every window just to expand something on the google sidebar.
- Florian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The sidebar needs to have a floating option. As is it displaces any desktop icon that under it. I hate that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's damned ugly (hopefully peopel can skin it) also, does this allow Google to record my activity? Or possibly create AdSense text ads based on my porn habits?
- adiosjefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How can anyone say that this is not bloated. I have installed this on 2 PC's now. It uses between 35-40MB of memory. I can do without this.
I can't wait for everyone to start hating Google like they do Microsoft!! -
