- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It doesn't sound like you can make outside purchases or pay people with it. Only stuff off Google Base. I wouldn't characterize it as competing against paypal just yet.
But god I hope it does. - spacemonkeyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Clearly it needs to be called "G-Money", homeboy.
Word is bond. - technstuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd definately switch from Paypal if they extend this out to sites other than just Google related. Make this available to make and accept Ebay payments and I'm set.
- ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read the screenshots: It states: Your statement will read "Google Bling Bling" !!
Thats funny. - xrayspex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It doesn't sound like you can make outside purchases or pay people with it. Only stuff off Google Base. I wouldn't characterize it as competing against paypal just yet.

EXACTLY..as of yet this really is hardly competition. Paypal desperately needs competition but if this google service doesnt let you pay people or recieve money from others then its really no competition. - updrifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Paypal does suck, maybe google can do this better.
- ZakColeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/02/27/exclusive-look-at-google-payments/
- sysera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know Google is famous for delivering "Beta" applications that are essentially prime time ready, but I really hope they skip that whole "Beta" thing with this. Money and beta do not go hand in hand as far as I'm concerned.
- JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm willing to give Google a chance. I remember back before eBay bought Paypal their www address was x.com or something like that They actually paid you $5 to open an account and I paid only $3 for an $8 book that I bought back then. That made my day. And now with eBay as the boss the $5 bonus fee disappeared and the seller rates got jacked up for taking Paypal.
- fishnchips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Something worrying about a payment system with the word 'Beta' in it!
- mrops, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3so if google's version of email is gmail....
does that imply that google's version of PayPal is GayPal - Kriz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm still digging this, because its likely to evolve into a paypal competitor once they've tested it on Google Services.
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gpay sounds too close to Gay and might offend some? Are you kidding me? If people are really that stupid.... the world is in pretty sad shape. Then again, we're probably talking about bible thumpers here... and they are pretty sad.
- GreenSlabOfClay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1eBay needs the competition.
Once eBay reached monopoly status, they raised rates.
Consumers don't like getting ***** over.
When there is a viable alternative, I'm switching over and shorting eBay stocks. - NippleNutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A payment system run by a giant douche and a turd sandwich would be better than PayPal, so yes I will embrace Google Money. Will that be a G with || ?
- kamagurka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yesss. PayPal is just hella shady, and I really don't wanna use them anymore.
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if google's customer service is better than paypal, i'll def be switching
- djdeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You are only allowed to accept paypal for online payments on Ebay. It is in their TOS now. Also, this states that you can use it with google stuff and nothing else.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1PayPal sucks so I'm all for this.
- xrayspex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not really in competition with paypal. You cannot recieve money from others, ect.
Its just to purchase google sponcered stores with your CC. - Deguello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this is strong, I will dump PayPal....Call it Poogle...Digg...

- tprzepiorka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If your are wondering about the price of Google Purchases:
http://www.google.com/support/purchases/bin/answer.py?answer=29062
(it is free, you dont pay extra) - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when this comes out, i will be skeptical to use it, as everyone else should be, just cause its google doesnt mean their wont be flaws and or not be secure...
- mtvkilledusall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't like that name.
Should be Google Cash or something. No, that's too close to Google Cache. hmmm.
How about GPay? - autobahn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Paypal is the reason I don't do any transactions on ebay anymore.
Craigslist FTW. Kinda hard to scam you when you make the transaction in person :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No thanks, I don't want Google to spy on my emails and I certainly don't want Google to spy on what I purchase online either.
- SWGreg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://googlebase.blogspot.com/2006/02/buying-on-google-base.html - Google Base Blog
- Eldoo77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Obligatory quote "All your base are belong to google."
- QettoE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I will defninitely switch if rates are right. PayPal has become the evil payment service and I'm quite sick of it.
- GreenSlabOfClay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Any word on insurance?
Yes, credit card companies provide some level of protection, however, it is better to have other levels.
Paypal's is pathetic. - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google Cash sounds better than Google Purchases.
I'll believe they're a serious competitor for PayPal when they're out of Beta and some web site other that Google accepts them as a payment method. - Gazzali, on 11/12/2008, -0/+0Cannot access to google purchases!!!
- PayneX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If google do this correctly, they could revolutionise the financial landscape of the internet.
ebay is ripe to be taken over, the only thing ebay has going for them is the inertia of their user base - i personally can't think of a website with a bigger userbase than google.
I predict in a couple of years ebay will be the uncoolest thing on the internet, like "chat rooms" or popups, and people who use it will the the grandmars and the scammers.
BTW, i vote for GayPal! - whistle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.google.com/support/purchases
- sakibomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0would someone please donate a thesaurus to the boys at techcruch.
"...it also has a much *nicer* interface ... the experience for a user is much *nicer* than what it is on eBay, a very *nice* interface ... to maintain this *nice* interface even as the inventory..."
nicely insightful ... thank god there are pictures i can look at instead. - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amazon is actually preparing a system that will compete against Paypal too.
- easterlingman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I seem to remember a Google blog post that claimed Google Purchases was in no way meant to compete with Paypal.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google must fail for the good of the world. If you think Microsoft and Apple are evil empires then we ain't seen nothin' yet
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GayPal...LOL!
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the article: "Every logos, trade marks and images are property of Google Inc "
o_O - punkrockgrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Folks, This IS NOT competition! Cannot digg this. As long as this Google service does not let you receive or send money to ordinary people (not just Google stores) it is in no way competition to PayPal..sadly becouse its badly needed!
No digg here.
Wooopdeedoo..it stores your credit card to use in THEIR stores that are signed up with them. - bebopbass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If google builds it they'll be accepted as a standard.
"I for one, welcome our Google overlords" - iambuzzin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sorry i just had to...
hey maybe i'll go lay by the bay and eat some hay, play with some clay; what do you say? i just may... - serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't wait for this, someone needed to knock Paypal out of their misery.

http://fuh-q.com - GodPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is the new Borg - Remember how cool Google was? Slowly they are getting so big that like M$ and EA Games it will soon be fashionable to hate google too because they are too establishment. So I am going to cut to the chase and start the Google Bashing Now!!!
Google sucks - oh wait I still love Google. I love M$ and EA GAMES too though. - Everman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait for Google to oust Ebay. Woe to you Ebay, for destruction comes your way. Woe to you paypal, nobody wants to put up with your BS anymore!
Goodbye, and good riddance! - joat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eBay & Paypal need some pressure they have called the shots toooooo long!
- crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about http://buy.google.com
