What is the difference in these stories??? - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Please let it be free. Please let it be free. Please let it be free.
I should say, though, it's not like we didn't see this coming from miles away. What's better than accumulating massive amounts of data on people surfing the web? Finding out what they keep on their own storage devices... - pynej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Too bad you canm already use Gtalk as an online storage drive.
- mxpxpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4they need an encyption on it, and certain other precautions before ill bite
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How many years will it be in beta?
So many things from Google, so few things ever completed. - butchcassidy503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"mistakenly released on the web".... Is it just me or are there a LOT of high profile companies "mistakenly" releasing "top secret" information on the web. In 2006 this is the new press release. Everyone's more eager to read it if they think it's something they're not supposed to know.
- Mond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3don't put anything that you will NEED to encrypt on their drives.... what's so hard about not placing that pr0n u have... and instead putting up pix of ur mom and dad on a picnic that the NSA wouldn't care about anyway... this is an excellent idea and i can't wait to use it.
- wintrode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So when the Gdrive does become reality, what will everyone use to encrypt their files before they put them on the Gdrive?
I know that if the 'Man' wants to get your files, he is going to, but I want to make it really annoying for the 'Man' or anyone else. So what would be a good product to do that, while allowing me to access them wherever I want and take the key with me in either a token or USB drive? - Canadiens1160, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's an interesting move, but it gives me the same predicament that Google Desktop Search does - do I really want Google having a look inside my hard drive?
- ericvdb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't suppose you've ever had a hard drive crash, a floppy or zip disk crap out, or a cdr get corrupted.
I would welcome this feature knowing that my important stuff could be retrieved if I don't re-backup everything everytime the industry decides to change formats. - TheRealPod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just give my my Gcalendar!
- mxpxpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lets put our files on google, i mean stuff never accidently leaks or is seen by people that shouldnt see it
- Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2before people start crying 'omg privacy' , it will almost certainly be an OPTIONAL thing you can do. they wont suddenly make everyone upload all their data to their servers
its something you have to WANT to do, before it gets done - no doubt through a specialised tool they'll create.
one you have to install and run before your data goes anywhere - kingofthegreens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bad Idea...to big an op here for the Government to step in and take over control of everyone's private information...There needs to be some restrictions that prevent google from actually extracting the info...give the users total control over the security on it, that way if the gov. wants it, they have to get the users to give up their password andor physical device that decrypts the info...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good thought. Encrypt it before you upload it.
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3hopefully you wont have to install google desktop to use this..
- twistx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7What are you some hillbilly idiot? Go make a tinfoil hat and study crop circles.
- Smily, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"when the Gdrive's security gets compromised" it will severly affect google in a bad way - so they won't let that happen i guess :)
- beatniak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTF?

Now way there is a digg effect in effect on the REUTERS website, is there? - ronintetsuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So this was 'discovered' when company files 'accidentally' leaked?
Riiiight. Next you'll tell me that this has nothing to do with the company's stockholders fearing for their bling. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1strange, an article which was similar appeared on Yahoo! and then was linked from slashdot - Yahoo! is also grinding to a halt
- beatniak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tnx mate. Reuters is down FTM BTW saying "General Error - We are experiencing technical difficulties at this time. Our apologies for the inconvenience. (10-0)"
- wintrode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not that I NEED to encrypt much of anything, but if I put some of my personal photos that I have taken over the years or other personal items up there, I would prefer them to be encrypted so that when the Gdrive's security gets compromised I have another layer of protection over my personal property. I mean I know that it's not going to be my dream Swiss bank file account (anonymous and super secure), but a little extra piece of mind for certain personal data would be nice wouldn't it?
- ScottyMo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2give 30boxes a shot
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Grr.. sorry, meant to click thumbs up and hit down by mistake for your comment. Where's the Un-Undigg feature?

http://investor.google.com/pdf/20060302_analyst_day.pdf - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have tried 30boxes and love it. I can't wait for Gcal though :(
- junkam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1old news. it is known for more than a week
- Brennan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really hope they do this soon with unlimited storage. I have this 250 gig hd that's completely full and is formatted reiserfs. I need to use this disk with windows for a while and since there are no decent tools for reading/writing reiser in windows, copying everything to gdrive and then copying it back after formatting to ntfs would work really well...
- xenoputtss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course google isn't going to be doing this because they supper nice, they want something out of it. They want the ability to read the data that you are storing, and to use that data to make a better profile of what intrests you. All this information is just going to be fed back into their ad-machine powerhouse and send you better related ads to what you will purchase.
If there was an encryption, it would have to be one where both you and google would have the key to decrypt the data, and you only have the key to encrypt it. Maybe part of an agreement with google would be that under ANY type of investigation, their copies of the keys would be destroyed and you notified of that, a new key generated and data reuploaded.. - xenoputtss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would you be afraid to put your pr0n on their drives? pr0n isn't illegal. I would definatly put my porn on their drives, as it means I don't have to clutter my drives up with it.
- fifaigor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds great, but I am somewhat curious about how they can put this to practice. For most people to put the computer's data on GDrive would require at least 50 to 100GB, which would take days to upload to their server.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can diggit, looks like we knocked them out though.
- boscorelle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds quite interesting
- mjar81, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yesssss!!!1 lets' giive g00gle all r informashin!!!
ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US - prazgod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I cant decide, shall I mark this as old news or duplicate post ?
- talmand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So I guess there's not enough crap floating around the net sucking up bandwidth and now people will backup photos and video of their dog online? You would need some serious upload bandwidth to make this useful and very few people in the US have decent upload bandwidth. Imagine backing up 10 gigs on 512k upload. Is it even useful at that point?
And it's a security nightmare waiting to happen. Better have some strong encryption ready. - ronintetsuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1While it will no doubt be 'optional' that won't stop them from popping up alerts that I can use their service all the effing time.
Kind of like what they did when they wanted to record all my googletalk conversations to my account. I've never uninstalled anything so fast in my life. - MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Old news, I've heard enough about the damn GDrive and Desktop Search syncing stuff... Kill me, kill me now...
- worthawholebean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DUPE
